MISSION APPEAL NEXT WEEKEND—JUNE 15/16
Next weekend, Father Gerald W. Aman, S.J., a Jesuit priest originally from Rochester, will join us for an appeal on behalf of Jesuit Missions. Fr. Aman is a member of the North-West Africa Province with many years of experience in Jesuit missionary work.
Fr. Aman went to Holy Trinity Grammar School and then to McQuaid Jesuit High School. He joined the Jesuit novitiate right after graduation from McQuaid, was ordained in 1973, and then worked as student chaplain at Canisius High School. In 1985 Fr. Aman was asked to go to Nigeria on the west coast of Africa. He has been there ever since. He spent ten years in parish work, three years as the superior of the philosophate community, and five years building a high school, Loyola Jesuit College, in Nigeria. For the last few years Fr. Aman has been the assistant to the Jesuit Provincial in Lagos, a city of fourteen million people. We warmly welcome him to our Parish and ask you to be as generous as you are able to his appeal.

FROM THE PASTOR Praised be Jesus Christ! Just a few thoughts below that relate to the Feast of Pentecost today: 1. Our Christian feast of Pentecost has its roots in an original
Jewish feast of Pentecost. When Acts 2 describes the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles on the day of Pentecost, the event coincides with the Jewish feast being celebrated in Jerusalem at that very time. The Jewish feast of Pentecost commemorated the giving of the law to Moses on Mt. Sinai, and also had an agrarian dimension, being known as a harvest festival under the title of the the “feast of first fruits.” It was one of three feasts during the Jewish year when faithful Jews were required to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast together in the Holy City. That’s why so many people from various nations of the world are present in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.
2.The principle elements of the Jewish feast find their parallel and fulfillment in that Pentecost which we celebrate. Whereas, Pentecost originally celebrated the giving of the law to Moses and the people of Israel, our Pentecost celebrates the giving of the Holy Spirit to the apostles and to the Church—who provides the power to keep the law of God. In fact, the grace of the Holy Spirit IS the New Law which is inscribed upon our hearts. It is the fulfillment of the words of the prophet Jeremiah: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah…I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people” (Jer 31: 31, 33). Our Christian Pentecost is also a feast of “first fruits” of sorts—not of a harvest of crops, but a harvest of souls. After receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, St. Peter goes out and preaches the name of Christ boldly, winning three thousand converts on that day alone. This Pentecost conversion was truly the “first fruits” of many, many baptisms to come. There is even a parallel regarding the number 3,000. Remember that when Moses originally came down the mountain after having received the law, the people of Israel were literally in the process of rebelling against God by having constructed the golden calf idol and worshipping it in the context of a pagan festive revelry. The rebellion was eventually quelled, but not before 3,000 of the people were slain. Note, therefore, how appropriate it is that 3,000 are “brought to life” through baptism on the first Christian feast of Pentecost.
3.The feast of Pentecost is sometimes referred to as the birthday of the Church. This is because once the whole Church, as represented by the apostles and Mary, receives the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church now has all of the essential elements of her Divine Constitution. The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles was not merely a transitory gift of grace bestowed personally on the apostles, but rather a stable “indwelling” of the Holy Spirit upon the Universal Church giving it the power, until the end of time, to sanctify through the sacraments, and teach and govern with authority, and to preserve the apostolic faith untainted until Christ comes again.
4. The Pentecost event is renewed and prolonged in the Church in a unique way through the Sacrament of Confirmation. Just as the Mass is the re-presentation of the one Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, there is a similar (though analogous) way of thinking the Sacrament of Confirmation as a re-presentation of the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
5. The Apostles are radically transformed into bold leaders and teachers by the power of Pentecost. I often say that the apostles and their evident faults as depicted in the Gospels are all too often used as “whipping boys” to emphasize human frailty or lack of comprehension in the Christian life. But these caricatures primarily describe the pre-Pentecost apostles, because afterward receiving the power of the Spirit, they teach and act with a boldness and a clarity that is the foundation of all the Church’s subsequent missionary efforts.
