AUG. 16, 2020 TWENIETH SUNDAY IN

ORDINARY TIME PASTOR’S NOTES

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP MARK Our spiritual well-being is nurtured through prayer, the Word of God, and the sacraments. The Holy Eucharist which we cel-ebrate at Mass, is central to our spiritual health. The Sunday celebration of the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of the life of the Church. It is not an individual thing, even as each person receives the Body and Blood of Christ. The Holy Eu-charist is all about the Church, the holy people of God being made into and renewed together as one. That means masks are not optional when you come to church. I know that in some parishes people are not wearing masks. No one likes wearing them. But we need to do it for our individual

good and the good of others. Wearing masks applies to every-one, including the bishop; all priests and deacons; readers; altar

servers; ushers, and all the people. I have heard health experts say that wearing a mask is the single most effective means of

stopping the spread of the Coronavirus. Using hand sanitizer is also a must. No one complained when I had to repeatedly sani-tize my hands when I celebrated the Ordination of our new

deacons or new priests for the Franciscans. There are not to be any missalettes or hymnals in any churches. But I have heard

that in some places the books are still there. They need to be put away immediately until further notice. I love music and

singing in church. The directives now in place are to have a cantor/song leader and no choirs. But there are places where

choirs are still being used. That needs to stop. There is to be proper physical distancing. For the most part people are seated according to the plan adopted in each church. However, there

are churches where people are not keeping a distance when they come forward to receive Holy Communion. And in some

places the people are stopping in the back of church or in the vestibule to speak with one another and their pastor; and every-

one has already removed their masks before they are outside and away from others. There should be no gathering in groups inside a church during this time. I think you get the picture. But

once again, I am urging you to complete the picture. There are gaps and people are telling me about them. They have every

reason to be concerned. In making me aware of their concerns, they are always thinking about the common good. Without our

best, conscious effort, we could be facing closed churches again. Let’s not go there, please! So if you need to refresh your memory, all of the Diocesan Directives for churches, sacra-

ments, etc. are still available on the diocesan website. I am proud of what has been accomplished thus far in parishes and

schools in our diocese during this Coronavirus pandemic. Thank you for your efforts. I urge everyone to remind yourself

each day that you have a part in this. We are in this together!

Plan of Life Most of us find our days are so full that we need a plan to make the best use of our time and to accomplish our duties. The same holds true for our spiritual life: we need to have a plan to follow. St. Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei, used the expression “Plan of Life.” With that he referred to a series of prayers and prac-tices that a person could follow in the course of the day, the week, etc. This can be seen as: -a program to follow to grow in Christian life -a way to incorporate prayer in our daily life -steps to take to be more aware of God's presence everywhere -a way to love because, after all, if you love someone you want to spend time with that person -a way to acquire good, regular habits of prayer and virtue -“and in the end you will be a more worthy soul” (St. Josemaria, The Way, Prologue) A Plan of Life can be lived by anyone; by persons of any age and place in life. There are no rigid rules; a person might choose to follow the plan proposed by others or to set up his/her own plan. The idea is that everyday there is a certain rhythm of prayer to sus-tain one’s relationship with God all the time, and to give strength to persevere each day. Begin with a particular practice of prayer -a devotion- for each month. These will be simple, good practices that each person can form into daily habits. It could include: the morning offering, spir-itual reading, examination of conscience, etc. For now, start with short prayers (sometimes called “aspirations”). -Glory be to the Father, Glory be to the Son, Glory be to the Holy Spirit. -Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may I always be with you. Bless my fam-ily. -Lord Jesus, I believe in you, I hope in you, I love you. -Lord, I thank you, forgive me, help me all the more. -“Lord, you know all things, you know that I love you.” (Words of St. Peter) -Holy Mary, my Mother, my Lady, my Queen, pray for me. -All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us. This month try to discover the ways to pray more aspirations. Use the ones given here or take them from one of the Litanies or from a prayer book; or make them up yourself. Try to pray them often, maybe every hour. When you do think of it, pray several in a row. Pray one in particular on a given day. But above all, use this simple form of prayer to address Our Lord and show him your love and devotion. My prayers are with you as we undertake this adventure of prayer.

CONGRATULATIONS TO Atlas Greylock Jacob, son of David and Madison, who will join our parish family this week-end through Baptism. May God bless him and his family.

Please return forms to the school or rectory office by 2pm this Thurs., Aug. 21st. We are working very hard to ensure a safe and healthy return to school for all students and faculty. See you in September!

St. Peter School Phased Reopening Health and Safety Plan

As required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, St. Peter School has created a Health and Safety Plan for Phased Reopening. It can be found on our school website at www.stpetersschoolsomerset.com. We encourage families to check it periodically for updates and changes due to new state, federal and local guidelines. Current St. Peter School families also received a memo in their August mailing about specific protocols for the beginning of the year. Any ques-tions or concerns are welcome by contacting the school office by phone or email.

Supply Lists and Health/Dental Forms/Uniform Ex-change

Parents are reminded that school supply lists are on our school website under “Forms and Documents” as well as Summer Reading information. As was announced this week, students do NOT need to bring in plastic spoons/forks or tissues as part of their supplies for the beginning of the school year. And please only send in antibacterial wipes if you can find them or can spare them. Parents can also access required physical and dental forms under the same tab. Forms can be mailed to the school, dropped off at the Rectory or faxed to: 814-445-7766. The Uniform Exchange will be available this Thurs. and Tues. and Thurs. after that leading up to the first day of school. Please stop in and check our supply before you order or purchase uniform items.

Welcome Back Open House and Campfire Due to restrictions, we will not have our regular Open House the third week of school. In lieu of that, we will open the school from 6–7pm on Sat., Aug. 29th for families to stop in, say hello to our new and veteran teachers and drop off school supplies. If this time does not suit, you are welcome to drop off supplies to classrooms Mon. (8/24) Tues. (8/25) or Thurs. 8/27) from 8am to 2pm. This will also let students see their classroom prior to the first day in case they are nervous or anxious about what school “will look like” Masks required in the school building. School families are then invited to bring camping chairs and YOUR OWN ROASTING STICKS and join in a FAMILY CAMP-FIRE behind the school at 7pm. Individually packaged “smore kits” will be available 1 per person. This is a “participate at your own risk and choosing” event. Masks not required if social distancing is observed outside. “Smore Kits” will be available to take home to enjoy for any family not attending the Campfire. In the event of in-clement weather, we will have only the Open House from 6-7pm.

STEWARDSHIP AUGUST 9, 2020 COLLECTION St. Paul reminds us that “the gifts and the call of God are irrevoca-ble.” We are each and all uniquely gifted by God in a variety of ways. Taking ownership of our gifts, especially our talents and abilities, is not being prideful or egotistical. It is living in true humility when we credit God with our gifts and put them in His service. Our unique gifts include our very lives and the time we have been given, our faith and the Church, our relationships, our work and vocations, our abilities and interests experiences and passions, our money and possessions, the environment and our citizenship, even our obstacles, weaknesses and mistakes.
