Stamp of approval

How lovely to hear from Raphael (Form 4) this week as his sailing boat makes land in French Polynesia. He sent despatches from Rangiroa, inspiring the rest of Form 4 to create their own postage stamps this week from parts of the work that are special to them.

Form 6 Trip to Chelsea Physic Gardens and Fishbourne Palace

Form 6 took a walk to the Chelsea Physic Garden this week to enhance their studies of plants, having started the week at Fishbourne Palace, a Roman palace that houses some of the finest Roman mosaics in the country.

The boys pit forth an impressive round of questions to their expert speaker at Fishbourne on the hottest day of the year, threw on a quick ‘tunica’ and toga fitting, and took on an ambling observation of the floor mosaics. bene agere ac laetari!

First XI vs Parents’ XI cricket

The First XI took on the Parents’ XI down at Barn Elms on Wednesday afternoon. A full match report can be read here. Kudos to the parents who put cosiness aside to catch, bowl and needle their own flesh and blood, and provided a delicious match tea.

Worth School visit

What a treat to have the week rounded off with a personal visit to St Philip’s from Worth School. We were honoured to receive Head Master Stuart McPherson (right) and Deputy Head Gordon Pearce for a tour of the School on Friday.

Some very talented St Philip’s boys have gone onto Worth with brilliant violinist Cyprian Beecroft the most recent in 2020. He is very happy and thriving there. 45 minutes from Clapham Junction, Worth has become an option for day boys travelling from South London and flexi-boarding makes it an intriguing prospect for all, especially for those that value a real Catholic education.

MATCH REPORTS

First XI v Parents’ XI

Wednesday saw the  annual St Philip’s  1st XI  vs Parents XI  fixture at a Barn Elms bathed in summer sun. The  much-anticipated match was labelled a  ‘friendly’, although between family  it  can be anything but friendly  with fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters all eager to get one over the other!

The parents took to the crease first with Messrs Mullan and Natale opening the batting, while Captain of Cricket Alex opened the bowling. Alex was keen to send his father packing but Mr Mullan was having none of it, deftly working the ball over the boundary for four as the first over went for 9.  Alex’s  bowling paid off, though, trapping his father bang to rights LBW. The drama begins.

One would have thought that one of these seasoned hands  in the Parents’ XI would have been familiar with the game of cricket but the display of batting that followed suggests otherwise! Aside from a respectable 13 (retired) from Mr Deacy, the next highest scoring batsman  was  Mr Dizon on 7. The problem did not seem to be connecting with the ball but running between the wicket – to be far, though, it was a scorching June day.

Fionn, Rafe, Augustin and Lucas intensified the heat, with each of them taking a wicket in their spell. Mrs Hierner was a saving grace in the parental innings; she combined diligence with grace to lead the side to a total of 98 off 18 overs . For most of  our  parents, this was their  first foray in to the middle for a very long time  – or, indeed, ever – and ones gets the impression that the First XI will have to up their game next year.    The famous St Philip’s match tea was resurrected and it certainly did not disappoint! Scrumptious refreshments including pasta parcels and sandwiches greeted the players between the two innings and sounded a chime of normality that could, perhaps, be on the horizon. All foddered and fed, the second innings kicked off with the boys chasing 99 to win the game.    Alec and James opened the batting. Outrageously, Mr Deacy bowled his youngest child – our Head Boy – for a duck. Quack! Thankfully, Macdonald managed to pick up the run rate before retiring on 21.

The Parents’ XI had a trick up their sleeve with the introduction of Miss Mullan into the attack in response to Captain of Cricket walking to the crease. This was great

captaincy and the onslaught began with a delivery that would put fear in to the Black Caps’  top order. Softened up by his sister’s menace – think Johnson at the Gabba – Alex was sent packing by Mr Oldfield with the help of a sharp catch from James’ sibling. Arthur stuck around at the crease for a gritty while, but was no match for Mrs Hierner as she uprooted his middle stump with some fabulous Belgian bowling.

What was to follow was unscriptable. Lucas was clean bowled by his  father shortly before Fionn – after a valiant 13 – sacrificed his wicket to his mother with Mr Cook taking a diving catch behind the stumps. Mr Cook’s moment of majesty was redolent of Surrey’s own Alec Stewart and will live long in the memory of those fortunate to bear witness. Judging by the way he nearly ran an innocent Head Master over outside the Oratory the following day, the excitement of it all was simply too much.

The final piece of drama unfolded with Percy at its centre, with Mr Drewry whizzing the ball past the umpire’s head and onto the pads of his incredulous son  for an indisputable LBW. Percy was still spitting feathers at Confirmation the following day and Mr Drewry was still basking in his glory.

Augustin, Edoardo and Oscar  saw out the remaining overs, managing to keep hold of their wicket and lead the side to victory with the score reading 102-6 off 18 overs.  The boys said sport was the winner but on this occasion the boys prevailed.
