Prayer to St. Michael
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares
of the devil. May God rebuke him,
we humbly pray; and do You,
O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the Power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and
all evil spirits, who roam throughout the
world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen
Pray to St. Michael for protection against the power of evil, and to bring us closer to God.

SACRED HEART CEMETERY
Burial in a Catholic cemetery is the final act of faith. The cemetery is a sacred space. We are dedicated to perpetual care and maintenance of Sacred Heart Cemetery.
We will be doing major upgrades and maintenance to Sacred Heart Cemetery for the next several months.
We will be updating the landscape, installing a new fence and gate.
The mausoleum and niche area will be updated including lighting.
Please pray for all those involved this very special under taking.

Faith Formation & Youth Ministry News
There is still time to Register
for K-8 Faith Formation
Classes. Although the Faith
Formation Office will be
closed on Labor Day, we will
reopen on Tuesday, September 5 from 12-
5 p.m. Please note our new fall hours for
the Faith Formation Office:
Monday's from 12-6:30 p.m.
Tuesday's from 12-5:00 p.m.
Thursday's from 12-4:00 p.m.
Our K-8 Faith Formation Classes open
the new school year on Monday,
September 18 with our "Welcoming
Mass". Please meet in Church and sit by
your assigned class. Pews will be marked
by grade level. Parents are welcome to
join us at this liturgy! After the liturgy,
teachers and students will be announced
and will proceed to their classrooms for a
"Meet and Greet until the 5:45
p.m. dismissal. Parents please pick up your
child at their classroom. Also please
remember that nothing we can do or
provide is enough if you do not practice
your faith at home or worship regularly in
the community. The way you practice your
faith, the value you place on good
attendance and going to Mass faithfully
will always have more impact on your
child than anything we teach them in
class! Ultimately, it is not what we say but
what we do that counts!
Children's Liturgy of the Word for K-
6th grade will begin on Sunday,
September 10 at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.
Children will be invited to come and hear
a child's version of the Gospel and
participate in discussion and crafts during
their time together. Children will remain in
the Conference Room during the Reading
of the Gospel and Homily during Mass.
All will be escorted back to the Church
after that. Please note all Catechists have
Catechetical Training, Protecting God's
Children Workshop and a background
check to maintain a safe environment for
our Children. We hope you will send your
child to hear God's Word on their level!
RCIA (Rite of Catholic Initiation of
Adults) classes also begin on September
10th. Please see the additional article in
the bulletin for more information.
High School Ministry meets on Tuesday,
September 5 for our first meeting after
Summer Vacation. All Students in Grades
9-12 are invited to join us. We will meet in
the Youth Room from 7-9 p.m. We hope
to see you there! All Confirmation Prep
Students are invited to join us too!
My topic this week is a
common feature found in
most hymnals. #984 in the
back of our hymnals is a
“Metrical Index of Hymn
Tunes”. This applies mostly to tradi-
tional hymns and I’ll give a couple of
examples.
At a recent weekday mass, I used
hymn #731, “Praise the Lord, Ye Heav-
ens”, sung to the tune of “Ode to Joy”
by Beethoven. Its meter (not time sig-
nature) is 87 87 D, which means the
first four phrases have 8, 7, 8, and 7
syllables. The remaining phrases follow
the same pattern, so the letter D is used
to show that the meter is doubled be-
cause it has 8 phrases. Looking at the
index at #984, it shows nine different
hymn tunes in the meter of 87 87
D. This means that any of the hymns
listed could use the melody from anoth-
er 87 87 D hymn. For instance,
“Hyfrydol”, commonly related to the
text, “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus” could be
used to sing #731, “Praise the Lord, Ye
Heavens”.
Another example from the same mass
was #517, “For the Healing of the
Nations”, sung to the tune “St.
Thomas”, which is usually the tune for
“Tantum Ergo/Sing, My Tongue, the
Savior’s Glory”, with a meter of 87 87
87 and with only six phrases. Looking
at the metrical index under 87 87 87,
there are 3 other hymn tunes with the
same meter. The tune “Picardy” is usu-
ally sung with the words “Christians Let
Us Love One Another” or “Let All Mor-
tal Flesh Keep Silent”, could also serve
as the melody for “For the Healing…”.
Contemporary songs are not usually
regular in their meter, so they generally
do not get a hymn tune. I hope this ex-
plains how we can sing one text to that
of another text’s usual tune.
Have a Blessed Week,

“Or who has given the Lord
anything that he may be
repaid” -Romans 11:35
St. Paul Reminds us of a
central fact of stewardship. We cannot
give the Lord anything, because God
already owns it all. God made every-
thing. All that we can do is return a
portion of God’s many gifts back to
Him. Sincere gratitude for our gifts
opens our hearts to joyful generosity!
Music Notes
"What profit would there be for one to
gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
Or what can one give in exchange for his
life? For the Son of Man will come with
his angels in his Father's glory, and then he
will repay all according to his conduct."
- Mt 16:26-27
