MASS INTENTIONS

CALENDAR CLUB WINNERS

I’m writing this reflection on Monday, November 2nd. It is the Commemoration of All Souls. My dad has been on my mind much of the day. He died on December 4th seven years ago. This time seven years ago I was with my dad and mom in Phoenix for the wedding of one of my cousins. He went to that wedding and when we returned there was another family wedding here in Omaha that he attended. He entered the hospital after that weekend and was there until he was called to our heavenly home. There are two stories my dad used to tell that come to mind today as I read about the Jesus’ response to the religious leaders of his day. He warns his disciples and us, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” They are ones that I take as cautionary tales as I’ve taken the role of a religious leader. The first was about a job he had in junior high. He worked for a local grocery store as a delivery boy. My dad was the oldest of 7 children and although my grandpa had a good job, my grandmother still had to find a way to stretch a dollar. He talked about how he would deliver food to the rectory of the Catholic Church. He was surprised by the size of the cuts of meat. He said that he had never seen pork chops cut that thick. They would have never gotten them at home that way. The other story was about the day my dad and mom got married. The pastor of the parish sent the associate pastor to the reception with the envelope my dad had given to him after the wedding. The associate gave it to my dad and said the pastor wanted to talk to him before he left for his honeymoon. My dad looked in the envelope and it was the $25 he had given the pastor for the wedding. As it happened, the pastor was not in when they stopped and so my dad followed up with him the following week. The pastor said he was disappointed because my dad gave him the same amount that he gave the organist and that he should have gotten more because he was the most important person at the wedding. My dad responded, “I thought Betty and I were the most important people at the wedding. I gave you $25 and you gave it back, so now you have nothing.” These stories of my dad and most recently Pope Francis’s example of humility and simplicity continue to challenge me and my priorities. I pray and that I can be as generous and simple as Pope Francis and the woman in today’s gospel who Jesus points out to his disciples. It is our challenge as Catholic Christians living in a nation of abundance. This simplicity is possible though if we truly desire it and we rely on God’s grace. Archbishop’s Annual Appeal Corner Receive the Gift: Please be generous to the 2015-16 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Your contribution is one way to serve as Christ’s disciple and to participate in continuing the saving work begun by Jesus. Our parish has currently committed $17,458.00 (30%) towards our goal of $58,458.58. This is with 102 (10%) households of our 966 responding. Please prayerfully consider a contribution to help us reach our goal! Discussions with the Pastor: You are invited to come and visit with an idea, concern, question, or if you would just like to talk. Feel free to come alone or with others. This week I will be available Tuesday, November 10th from 4:30 to 5:30 pm and Thursday, November 12th from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

The whimsical image on the front cover commemorates a few changes to the St. Pius X parish bulletin. Most noticeably, we have added full color on the front and back covers. This will allow for better use of the front space to promote parish events. And it will allow us to offer higher quality images on the back for those businesses who generously support our bulletin with their ads. Inside the bulletin, there are changes as well. We have added more pages, which makes for a little more “breathing room” between

sections. Hopefully, this will help readers quickly find the information they are most interested in. The added page count means we can put more content in each bulletin without sacrificing legibility. It also allows us to better group related sections by topic. This page you are reading now is dedicated to parish news and events. The following two pages feature information from the parish directors, and from around the Archdiocese. The last couple of pages feature all of our “charts”, such as the ministry schedule, school menu, and parish contact information. And we have a full page to feature flyers available in the kiosk, without the need to print additional inserts. We hope you enjoy the changes to the bulletin and find them useful. As always, we welcome your feedback and submissions for bulletin items. Please send all correspondence to [email protected] And now, on with the show . . . !

As you are all aware, our country recently celebrated a visit from Pope Francis. It was his first visit to the United States causing much excitement among Catholics and non-Catholics around the country. That excitement was evident in many ways here at St. Pius X / St. Leo School. Students at all levels participated in activities that not only celebrated the visit of our pope but also provided opportunities to learn a little more about him and what it means to be the pope. Below is a list of some of those exciting activities: The second graders had fun making their very own pope puppets. The 8th graders watched clips from the canonization Mass of Junipero Serra. Many seventh graders participated in a Papal Trivia

Competition that lasted throughout the week. Congratulations to our winners at the end of the week who were Max Christiansen and Naomi Piskorski. Flat Francis was all over the school. He made appearances in the library, in PE class, he helped students take tests, and he got to go home with some third graders who created their own posters showing what they did with Flat Francis. Flat Francis was even seen in the cafeteria eating lunch with students! Many students made their own version of the pope’s mitre, and got to wear those during the school day. We had a school-wide white out on Friday where students could wear a white shirt and dress down pants in honor of Pope Francis. Some fourth graders played

“Simon Peter Says” in honor of the first Pope. “Simon Peter” had the students doing Religious themed actions such as genuflecting or doing the sign of the cross reverently. They also prayed the Prayer of St. Francis all week. Students throughout the school days had opportunities to really feel like they were a part of the pope’s visit by watching various events courtesy of live streaming. Many teachers commented on how wonderful it was to hear questions from the students wanting to learn more about Pope Francis and the papacy. Our SPSL students were in awe of the celebration of our Catholicity throughout the week during the visit from Pope Francis.

St. Pius X Church Youth Group is a gathering for all 9-12th Grade Students. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 12:30. It is an opportunity to meet new people, learn about our faith, and have fun, too. All are welcome! For more information, please contact Janet Drvol by email at

The showcase for November in the church’s narthex area has the theme of furthering God’s Kingdom. It was inspired by the last Sunday in our Church Calendar—the Feast of Christ the King [November 22nd this year]. This display is focused on an historical event very dear to my heart: that 25 years ago the

Servants of Mary French Sisters sent three sisters as missionaries to Zaire, a French speaking country in the heart of Africa. As a younger sister, I remember well hearing about these three women bravely choosing to embark in this new [for us] missionary work. Now as they celebrate their presence 25 years later in this war-

torn land, now called Democratic Republic of the Congo, I am pleased to introduce them and share their story and their dream for the future. Please check out the display sometime before November 22nd. I am grateful to be able to share this story of my religious community!

Vocations Night for the urban area RE programs was held October 28th at St. Elizabeth Ann Parish. Levels 5

and 6 in Pius’ RE program attended. Fr. Michael Voithofer, associate pastor at St. James Parish, emceed the evening with

story, song and humor. Attendees listened to several stories of call to consecrated life, viewed videos on religious vocations, and participated

in a prayer service with music led by Gene Klosner. Vocations Night was especially significant given that Pope Francis has proclaimed this year, “The Year of Consecrated Life.” “Pray for a Confirmation Candidate” name cards are available for the taking this weekend. Parishioners are invited to take a name card from the basket on the Baptismal pool ledge and pray for a candidate, and then provide a greeting card telling the candidate who they are and that the candidate has been kept in prayer. Confirmation will be on December

6th. Greeting cards are due back by November 28th. A teaching Mass? Yes! Fr. Mark Bridgman will offer Mass on Monday, November 23rd, 7:00 pm, at Pius X Church for the purpose of enlightening attendees about our Sunday tradition. Called, “Our Sunday Tradition: Understanding the Holy Mass,” Father Mark will not only explain the Mass, but also the parts of the sanctuary, the priest vestments and the design of a Catholic church. Pius’ RCIA team and Spectrum are sponsoring this informative and faith-filled evening.
