Teach children how to explain inappropriate behavior

Statistics show that children may tell their story of abuse to adults as many as nine times before someone recognizes what is being disclosed and takes action. An important part of empowering children to protect themselves from abuse is giving them the right language to explain inappropriate or uncomfortable behaviors they may encounter. A child who can describe what happened to make him feel violated or uneasy can much more easily communicate with trusted adults to stop a predator, or end a potentially dangerous situation.

THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT. Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

T ’ R First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23). ST. CHARLES LWANGA AND COMPANIONS

(martyred 1886-87) June 3rd

“Master of Pages,” reputedly the handsomest man in all Uganda, Charles Lwanga, lay catechist, courageously led about forty teenaged boys, Catholics and Anglicans, on a forty-mile forced march to martyrdom for their common Christian faith. Teaching each other the hymns of their different churches, they strengthened one another for the ordeal ahead. King Mwanga, himself barely twenty, had ordered them executed for being “those who pray.” But these royal pages were the king’s male harem, who, now Christians, refused what pious accounts demurely describe as his “unreasonable demands.” Some were clubbed to death, most burned alive; the youngest, thirteen-year old Saint Kizito, whom Charles had often shielded from the King’s lust; the most tragic, Saint Mbaga, whose father was his executioner! In 1964, Pope Paul VI canonized the young Catholics and praised their Anglican companions, recalling the heroism of early Christianity’s African martyrs, which we modern Christians of far less faith never expected to see repeated. Forty years after the pope’s words, what does our faith cost us? Heroism aside, how generous is our response? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PENTECOST SUNDAY

There appeared to them tongues as of fire, which

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ CALLS ON CALIFORNIA CATHOLICS TO

SUPPORT EXTENDING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS FOR

CHURCH WORKERS Archbishop José H. Gomez is asking California Catholics to support extending unemployment benefits to Church workers under federal emergency legislation addressing dislocations caused by the coronavirus epidemic. Currently, non-profit employees in multiple states do not have access to state unemployment insurance. Faith communities are urging Congress to provide emergency disaster unemployment assistance to workers that are not covered by state unemployment insurance. “As we know, the impact of the coronavirus emergency is being felt profoundly in our Catholic community. Nationwide, the Church has been forced to suspend worship services and close schools and other important offices and ministries, effecting tens of thousands of our employees,” said Archbishop Gomez. “Please join me in asking Congress to extend unemployment benefits to Church workers who might need this relief. Let us stand together in solidarity for our brothers and sisters in this time of trial and need.” California Catholics are asked to contact Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, as well as local representatives, to make sure they are aware of this problem of non-profit employees in multiple states who do not currently have access to state unemployment insurance, and to ask that they support an effective solution.

M I The names on the Mass Intention List for daily and Sunday Masses scheduled from March 19, 2020 to the present were included in the Pastor's intentions in his private masses while the Church is closed to the public. Fr. Art will continue to include the names on the Mass Intention Book in his private masses until the Church is permitted by the Archdiocese to celebrate Masses for the public. If anyone wishes to honor a deceased relative or friend during this pandemic, she/he may still drop off the name(s) in the Rectory Mail Slot; a donation will be greatly appreciated to help support the parish's repair/maintenance expenses. The names will be included in the Pastor's forthcoming private masses until our church holds public Masses.

During the temporary suspension of public celebration of the Mass, please mail in or drop off your offertory envelopes in the rectory office mail slot to help support the upkeep of the church building, offices, center and hall.
