GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE

DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Music Ministry We will begin preparing for the Christmas Season.

Practice will be Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m.

in the church.

“Ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance …” In the

ancient world and into the Middle Ages, there was no

treatment for leprosy. People thought it was wildly

contagious and were suspicious of any skin diseases.

Lepers were isolated from civil society. This isolation

was uphold by the Mosaic Law. Should there be a healing

from leprosy, the former leper was to present himself to a

priest to certify the healing. Like Jesus commands,

“Show yourselves to the priests.” The person would

then undergo a religious rite to be formally reintroduced

to society. In other words, a leper got their life back.

So why didn’t they come back?

“As they were going they were cleansed. And one of

them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying

God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and

thanked him.” Of the ten lepers healed by Christ, only

one returns with a grateful heart. The others, perhaps,

were thankful enough. Perhaps they couldn’t believe

their luck, and they hastened to the priests to confirm the

healing. They were more than willing to leave their life

of rejection and isolation behind. Why take any steps

backward, when the way ahead was so attractive? An

attitude like this is perhaps understandable, but few would

admire it.

How about you? Do you come back? If you’ve ever had

the experience of getting what you hoped and prayed for,

you know that this can sometimes be easier said than

done. When we’ve wanted something badly enough, how

easy it can be to focus on the gift rather than the giver.

The truth is, God is daily offering us gifts: the gift of our

existence, of the created world, of family and friends, of

modern conveniences. Even in times of distress, there is

always something to be thankful for. This Sunday, give

yourself a gratitude check. Count your blessings. Glorify

God and thank Him for the gift of your life!

Mission Sunday. We celebrate the day by remembering

the revitalizing mission at the heart of our Christian

faith - to bring the Gospel to all! The envelope today for

the Society for the Propagation of the Faith ensures the

work and service of the Mission Church, as it supports

priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s

mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable

communities in the Pope’s missions. Thank you for your

generosity.

Many thanks to our parishioners who took part in

the LifeChain this past Sunday in Ligonier. Thank you to those prayer warrior's who stood

outside Pittsburgh Planned Parenthood on Monday,

October 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Although we had

light rain on Our Lady's Feast Day, Our Lady of the

Holy Rosary, it did not deter us from praying the

Holy Rosary and Littanies to the Virgin Mother. It

was a very positive day with the passerbys thanking

us for praying for the preborn children. We hope to

go again during the last week of Oct. If you would

like to put your faith into action and join us.

THANK YOU again St Raymond and Our Lady

of Grace parishioners.

BIBLE

Jesus is the Word of God incarnate in human flesh and

blood. The Bible is the Word of God written in human

languages and cultures. Both were given to us sinful

members of a sinful human race to reveal the love of a

God who has chosen to grant merciful forgiveness to all

who choose to “Repent and be saved”(Mt 3:2, 4:17), but

gives many Old Testament examples of the merciless

punishment that awaits those who do not follow his Com-

mandments (Gen 19:24) and especially his supreme law

of love as taught and exemplified by Jesus, the Son of

God. If you really wish to know God and his will for you,

set aside fifteen minutes each day to read thoughtfully and

prayerfully five minutes from the Old Testament Book of

Psalms, five minutes from the New Testament Gospels

and five minutes on an optionally chosen passage.

NEW EVANGELIZATION

Every Christian has the mission to proclaim the Good

News/Gospel (Mt 28) that God reveals Himself to human

beings who develop a personal relationship with Jesus,

the incarnate Word of God, as a friend and brother. He

is alive with his Holy Spirit in the lives of us Christians.

We are commissioned to “Be holy as your heavenly

Father is holy.” (Lev 19:2, Mt 5:48) This may be a practi-

cal impossibility, but it is a gentle command to imitate the

examples of Jesus, Mary and all the other saints who have

chosen to live by obedience to accepting the crosses

handed to us. We have also been given the command

to share with others in their tragedies the strength and

consolation that we received in ours. (2 Cor 1:4) Our

lifestyle of empathy, service and genuine concern is the

first step in evangelizing by attracting others to our Faith.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Catholic Faith is both a Creed or statement of

beliefs based on the life, death, resurrection and ascension

of Jesus, and a morality or lifestyle based on his law that

love and service to the needy is love and service to God

himself. Although our present-day Catechism of the

Catholic Church is a several-hundred page detailed

explanation of Catholic doctrine, the earliest Creeds are

the Nicene Creed, formulated at the Council of Nicaea in

325 AD, and the Apostles’ Creed which was recited in

the Liturgy even before that; both contain the essential

revealed truths about our triune God based on our knowl-

edge and understanding of Jesus as the incarnate Son of

God the Father in the Holy Life-Spirit, and who is present

among us today in the Assembly or Church of God’s

Chosen People.
