THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 14, 2021

St. Remy Legacy Society Event postponed. I had previously announced plans for a special event this month, at

which any interested persons could learn more about how they can help the parish’s future with planned giving. That event was sched-uled for November 20, but will be postponed until next year. If you have any questions, of course let me know.

Remember what happened on Veterans Day. My parents used to refer to it as “Armistice Day” because it

was the day on which the First World War ended, after 21 million people had died. The guns ceased firing at 11 a.m., hence, on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Because the U.S. entered this war in its final six months, we did not incur the horrific casualties of the nations of Europe. So devastating was that war in Europe that it led to the dissolution of two empires (the Austrian and Ottoman), the abolition of the Ger-man monarchy, and the communist revolution in Russia. The British and French empires survived, but were wrecked, all the same. And that war sowed the seeds not only for the Second World War, but to some degree, all the wars of the 20 th century. Because the First World War was so destructive, many countries call November 11 “Remembrance Day,” treating the day much as we do Memorial Day. It would be a good day to pray, not only for our veterans and those who died for our country, but also for the justice that leads to true peace, both in our nation and among nations of the world.

Final Report on the Festival. Thanks to the hard work of our leadership – Brandi Phlipot, Chelsea Hoying, and Jen

Simon – the many dedicated volunteers, and the great involvement of all our parishioners, the annual Russia Homecoming took in a net profit of $55,721. (This doesn’t include the $3,223 raised by Shelby Right to Life at its stand.) As in past years, with Jana Francis’ help, the committee provided me a fairly detailed report, which makes it possible to review the results in preparation for next year. You can find a copy of it inserted in this bulletin.

Reminder about Mass, missing Mass, and bad weather. It is not a sin – no, not even a venial sin! – to

miss Holy Mass on Sunday if there is a good reason. That includes being sick (and it isn’t a matter of being “sick enough”: in my judg-ment, if you genuinely don’t feel well, stay home). For all you know, you have something infectious, and so it would be an act of charity to avoid spreading it. Another good reason is when weather creates hazards, either for driving or walking. And this changes for those who are above a certain age or aren’t fleet of foot. In my judgment, it is legitimate to stay home from Mass if you reasonably think condi-tions are risky – either for driving, or simply walking to and from the car. You don’t have to wait for it to get “bad enough.”

Is Mass ever canceled? It isn’t very likely to happen because of weather, because nearly all the time, I need only walk

over from my house to offer Mass. However, it is certainly possible I might be returning to the parish from further away, or I might be away, and a visiting priest is scheduled, and he cannot make it. Or I could be sick. If Mass is ever canceled, we will notify everyone by Flocknote and Facebook. Now would be a good time to go to stremychurch.com to sign up for Flocknote notifications! I also suggest that you visit masstimes.org, where you can see what the Mass times are for neighboring parishes.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development Collection. Every year in November, the U.S. bishops

ask for this collection, and the funds go to national and local organizations that are judged by the bishops to be worthy of support, with the expectation that the results will “empower people to achieve a better life,” in the words of the reminder I got from the archdiocese. It’s no secret that many Catholics have raised questions about some of the organizations that receive funds from this collection. There are several organizations that have written about this at length, and those are easy to find online. At the bishops’ website is an article re-sponding to those criticisms: https://www.usccb.org/committees/catholic-campaign-human-development/cchd-report-all-accusations. We take up the second collection for this at the direction of Archbishop Schnurr; this’s year’s collection will be on November 21. No

one is obliged to support this fund.

Beacons of Light announcement December 5. The Archdiocese sent out word on November 10 that the

announcement of final arrangements of the new “families of parishes” will be made on Sunday, December 5. The information will be

published online that morning. In addition, some materials will be sent out to pastors beforehand, but it isn’t clear just what that infor-mation will include. There will be a letter from Archbishop Schnurr to distribute in the bulletin, as well as an audio recording available to

play at all Masses that day. No doubt this will prompt more questions, but this is really ALL I know at this point.

From the Deacon’s Desk

The following article was written by Deacon Mike Meyer.

In today’s Gospel reading, we hear about the second coming of Christ. This passage reminds us that no one knows the day or the hour when this will happen, not even the angels in Heaven, or even the Son, but only the Father. Throughout the centuries, peo-ple have speculated about the details of Christ’s second coming. The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers us some valuable information about this through the wisdom of the Church: Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The perse-cution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of aposta-sy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh... The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection. The kingdom will be fulfilled, then, not by a histor-ic triumph of the Church through a progressive ascendancy, but only by God’s victory over the final unleashing of evil, which will cause his Bride to come down from heaven. God’s triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgement after the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world. The pressing question that we need to ask ourselves is not, “When will this happen?” Instead, we need to ask, “Am I ready? Am I prepared to meet Jesus face to face when the time comes?” And finally, “What do I need to do or change in order to be better prepared for Christ’s coming?”

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 14, 2021

What Does “Purgatory” Mean?

The following article was written by Philip Kosloski and was found at aleteia.org. The quote from Pope Benedict

at the end was found at dailyrosaryfamily.com. The word purgatory means “a place of purification,” reflecting the Catholic teaching on what happens to many souls before they reach Heaven. The concept of Purgatory can be a strange one for many to accept, as it can seem like a middle place, between Heaven and Hell. Yet, in reality, Purgatory is much more related to Heaven, and its name helps explain what happens in this stage of the afterlife. The English word purgatory comes from the Latin purgare, “to make clean, to purify.” It is a place of final purification before a soul reaches the gates of Heaven. The Catechism of the Catholic Church expands on this idea: The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned...The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleans-ing fire: As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come. CCC 1031 C.S. Lewis (although he was not a Catholic) gave a profound (and comical) description of Purgatory that connects to this definition. He wrote in The Great Divorce: “Our souls demand Purgatory, don’t they? Would it not break the heart if God said to us, ‘It is true, my son, that your breath smells and your rags drip with mud and slime, but we are charitable here and no one will upbraid [scold] you with these things, nor draw away from you. Enter into joy?’ Should we not reply, ‘With submission, sir, and if there is no objection, I’d rather be cleansed first.’ ‘It may hurt, you know’ - even so, sir.” It could be described as a washroom before reaching the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. Not all souls require this final purification, but many will, and it is seen as a part of God’s Divine Mercy that it exists, to give our souls the chance to reach Heaven. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For a little more clarification, let’s take a look at what Pope Benedict XVI had to say about Purgatory: “The encounter with Him [Christ] is the decisive act of judgement. Before His gaze, all falsehood melts away. This encounter with Him, as it burns us, transforms and frees us, allowing us to become truly ourselves. All that we build during our lives can prove to be mere straw, pure bluster, and it col-lapses. Yet in the pain of this encounter, when the impurity and sickness of our lives become evident to us, there lies salvation. His gaze, the touch of His heart, heals us through an undeniably painful transformation ‘as through fire.’ But it is a blessed pain, in which the holy power of His love sears through us like a flame, enabling us to become totally ourselves and thus totally of God. In this way the inter-relation between justice and grace also becomes clear: the way we live our lives is not immaterial, but our de-filement does not stain us forever if we have at least continued to reach out towards Christ, towards truth and towards love.”

2022 National March for Life
