Brothers and sisters: In his Apostolic Exhortation “Rejoice
and be Glad,” Pope Francis invites us to be a people of prayer and to practice the faith with joy. ‘Christ asks everything of us and in return he offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created.’ Jesus our Savior does not want us to settle for a bland and mediocre existence. The Pope praises the holiness found in the patience of God’s people: ‘in those parents who raise their children with immense love, in those men and women who work hard to support their families, in the sick, in their daily perseverance.’ Francis mentions that this is a holiness found in our next-door neighbors, those who, living in our midst, reflect God’s presence. Real history is made by so many of them. “Certainly the most decisive turning points in world history are substantially co-determined by souls whom no history book ever mentions,” (St. Theresa Benedicta of the Cross, The hidden life and Epiphany, XI). The Christian life is a constant battle. Each day we must pray for strength and courage. It is not just a battle against the world and its modern mentality, the Pope writes, it is also a battle against our human weaknesses and proclivities, laziness, envy, prejudice and jealousy. “The tendency is to flee to a safe haven that can have many names: individualism, spiritualism, avarice, living in a little world, addiction, intransigence, the rejection of new ideas and approaches, dogmatism, pessimism, hiding behind rules and regulations.” This type of behavior deceives us and leaves us dull and mediocre, lacking in enthusiasm and joy. We can be sure of one thing, Christian triumph is always a cross, yet a cross which is at the same time a victorious banner. The path of holiness is a source of peace and joy, given to us by the Spirit. Fr. Machado
Fr. Machado

A Prayer for Fathers God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; May they find the courage and perseverance to balance work, family, and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for our own fathers who have supported and challenged us; May they continue to lead
in strong and gentle ways. We remember fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfathers, & great-grandfathers who are no liger with us but who live forever in our memory
and nourish us with their love. - Amen
