Dear Friends,

Today , the Church rings in the New Year by celebrating our most ancient feast of the Blessed Virgin

Mary, honoring her with one of her most beautiful titles, Holy Mother of God. On this day so filled with the

hope of new beginnings and good resolutions, Mary also stands before us as Queen of Peace, the woman of

contemplative prayer who reflects in her heart on God’s ever-renewed presence in the world. She is likewise

first among the Disciples, the woman of Gospel action, who responds to God’s word with obedient faith and

selfless charity. As we begin this New Year, she points to her Son and says to us what she told the servants

at Cana’s wedding feast, “Do whatever he tells you.”

On behalf of Father Tralies and the entire staff of our parish office, thank you for the many beautiful

cards, well wishes and treats that came our way during this holiday season. Your generosity and

thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated by all of us!

As you are aware, this week the priests and all school principals and parish religious education

directors have been called to a meeting at Neumann College on Friday morning to hear the decisions that

Archbishop Chaput accepted from the Blue Ribbon Commission concerning the Catholic elementary and

secondary schools throughout the archdiocese. This is going to be a very difficult meeting for all of us.

Although I do not anticipate any structural changes here with Saint Joseph/Saint Robert School, the closing

of any school effects the entire local church. Please pray this week that what has been decided will be

accepted as the work of the Holy Spirit and the wisdom of our archbishop.

This Friday is First Friday. Our school community will join in celebrating Mass at 9AM and will

pray the prayer of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the conclusion of this Mass. Please join our

school community to gather and pray for the blessings of the new year.

As we begin this New Year, let us pray for the continued intercession of our patron, Robert

Bellarmine, and through his prayers may we grow as a community of faith marked by our generosity to

others and our respect for one another.

With prayers,

Monsignor Beisel

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

FOCUS ON FAITH SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

Today's reading is a continuation from the Gospel proclaimed at the Christmas

Mass at midnight. In it the shepherds act upon the message they receive from

the angel and go to find Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem. In their visit to the

manger, the shepherds find things just as the angel had said. The shepherds'

visit, therefore, is a moment of fulfillment, manifestation, and the beginning of

the salvation we receive through Christ.

In the context of today's Solemnity, this reading also helps us focus on Mary as

the Mother of God. The reading tells us at least three things about Mary as a

mother. First, Mary is described as a reflective person, keeping the reports of

the shepherds in her heart. Second, we are reminded of how obedient Mary

was to God when she named the baby Jesus as the angel Gabriel had directed.

Third, this reading shows Mary and Joseph faithfully observing their Jewish

tradition by having Jesus circumcised. Because of Mary's faithfulness to God,

she was able to receive the gift of God's Son and accept her role in God's plan

for salvation. By doing so, she models for us the path of discipleship and is also called Mother of the

Church. For your reflection, a poem by Madeliene L’Engle:

Mary Speaks O you who bear the pain of the whole earth, I bore you.

You, who, when your hem is touched, give power, I nourished you. Who turns the day to night in this dark hour, Light comes from you.

O you who hold the world in your embrace, I carried you. Whose arm encircled the world with your grace, I once held you.

O you who laughed and ate and walked the shore, I played with you. And I, who with all others, you died for, now I hold you.

May I be faithful to this final test: In this last time I hold my child, my son, His body close enfolded to my breast, The holder held: the bearer borne. Mourning to joy: darkness to morn. Open, my arms: your work is done.
