The “Hour” Comes: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Fifth Sunday of Lent:

Our readings today are filled with anticipation. The days are coming, Jeremiah prophesies in today’s First Reading. The hour has come, Jesus says in the Gospel. The new covenant that God promised to Jeremiah is made in the “hour” of Jesus—in His Death, Resurrection, and Ascension to the Father’s right hand.

The prophets said this new covenant would return Israel’s exiled tribes from the ends of the world (see Jeremiah 31:1, 3–4, 7–8). Jesus too predicted His passion would gather the dispersed children of God (see John 11:52). But today He promises to draw to Himself not only Israelites, but all men and women.

The new covenant is more than a political or national restoration. As we sing in today’s Psalm, it is a universal spiritual restoration. In the “hour” of Jesus, sinners in every nation can return to the Father—to be washed of their guilt and given new hearts to love and serve Him.

In predicting He will be “lifted up,” Jesus isn’t describing only His coming Crucifixion (see John 3:14–15). Isaiah used the same word to tell how the Messiah, after suffering for Israel’s sins, would be raised high and greatly exalted (see Isaiah 52:3). Elsewhere the term describes how kings are elevated above their subjects (see 1 Maccabees 8:13).

Troubled in His agony, Jesus doesn’t pray to be saved. Instead, as we hear in today’s Epistle, He offers himself to the Father on the Cross—as a living prayer and supplication. For this, God gives Him dominion over heaven and earth (see Acts 2:33; Philippians 2:9).

Where He has gone we can follow—if we let Him lead us. To follow Jesus means hating our lives of sin and selfishness. It means trusting in the Father’s will, the law He has written in our hearts. Jesus’ “hour” continues in the Eucharist, where we join our sacrifices to His, giving God our lives in reverence and obedience—confident He will raise us up to bear fruits of holiness.

Las lecturas este domingo están llenas de expectativas. “Los días que vienen…”, dice el profeta Jeremías en la primera lectura. “La hora ha venido” dice Jesús en el Evangelio. La Nueva Alianza que Dios prometió a Jeremías se cumple en la “hora” de Jesús: en su muerte, resurrección, y ascensión a la derecha del Padre.

Los profetas predijeron que con esta Nueva Alianza regresarían, de todos los rincones de la tierra, las exiliadas tribus de Israel (cfr. Je 31,1.3.4.7.8). Jesús profetizó también que su Pasión reuniría a los hijos dispersos de Dios (Jn 11,52). Sin embargo, en el Evangelio de este domingo Jesús promete que atraerá hacia Sí no sólo a los israelitas, sino a todos los hombres y mujeres (Jn 12, 32).

La Nueva Alianza es mucho más que una reivindicación política o nacional. Como cantamos en el salmo, es una restauración espiritual universal. En la “hora” de Jesús, los pecadores de todas la naciones pueden regresar al Padre para ser lavados de su culpa y recibir corazones nuevos para amarle y servirle.

Jesús, al decir que será “levantado”, no está aludiendo solamente a su crucifixión ya próxima (cfr. Jn 3,14-15). Isaías usa la misma expresión para describir cómo el Mesías, después de sufrir por los pecados de Israel, sería levantado y grandemente exaltado (Is 52,2). En otra parte, el término se refiere a cómo los reyes serían elevados sobre sus súbditos (cfr. 1M 8,13).

Jesús, durante su agonía, no oró para ser salvado. Más bien, según leemos en la epístola de este domingo, se ofreció a sí mismo al Padre en la cruz como súplica viviente. Por ello, Dios le dio potestad sobre el cielo y la tierra (Hch 2,33; Flp 2,9).

A donde ha ido podemos seguirle, si nos dejamos guiar por Él. Seguir a Jesús significa odiar el pecado y el egoísmo presentes en nuestra vida. Quiere decir confiar en la voluntad del Padre: en la ley que Él ha escrito en nuestros corazones.

La “hora” de Jesús continúa en la Eucaristía, donde unimos nuestros sacrificios al Suyo, entregando nuestras vidas a Dios como acto de reverencia y obediencia, confiando en que él nos elevará para que demos frutos de santidad.

St. Vincent de Paul

Serving means following; following Jesus means serving. Also, serving means entering into Jesus’ death - like Jesus we must also be the grain that dies to produce much fruit. When we follow Jesus into his service, we, too, have the pledge of receiving the same honor that the Father bestows on Jesus. We see Jesus by being Jesus. It’s that simple! And that challenging. We see Jesus in those who lay down their life in servanthood and others see Jesus in us when we are servants. (Living Liturgy, p.94)

Sirviendo quiere decir siguiendo; siguiendo a Jesús quiere decir: servir. Sirviendo indica el entrar dentro de la muerte de Jesús - como Jesús tenemos que ser también el grano que se muere para producir mucho fruto. Cuando seguimos a Jesús hacia Su servicio, nosotros también recibimos la promesa del mismo honor que el Padre le otorga a Jesús. Vemos a Jesús siendo nosotros Jesús. ¡Es tan sencillo! Y tan desafiante. Vemos a Jesús en aquellos que dan su vida en servir y otros ven a Jesús en nosotros cuando somos sirvientes. (Liturgia Viviente)

Knights of Columbus annual Lenten Fish Fry will be held every Friday of lent. The event will be a drive thru from 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm. A limited amount of plates will be served. The plate will include 2 pieces of fish, cole slaw, corn on the cob, and corn bread, or a fish sandwich and chips. Come early to grab your plates!

Dear faithful of St. Rose of Lima,

As your Pastor I am concerned about the welfare of the people of our parish community, especially in this time of pandemic. I am especially concerned about the members of our community that have become isolated and alone; and all those dealing with the problems of these difficult times and finding it impossible to resolve them on their own. Just as it is impossible for one individual to reach out to all our parish families on their own!

Thus, I am asking you to participate with me in our pastoral initiative to reach our to every member of our parish community by telephone. We want to ask people about their welfare, issue they are facing, problems in our community. Eventually, we will begin inviting people to meet with each other via Zoom in small group discussions, to share their stories with one another, to reflect on sacred scripture, and to devise plans of action to support one another in these difficult times. Please participate with me to re-engage the faithful of St. Rose of Lima parish, for us to strive to be a vibrant parish community and the Body of Christ. Como vuestro párroco me preocupa el bienestar de la gente de nuestra comunidad parroquial, especialmente en este momento de pandemia. Me preocupan especialmente los miembros de nuestra comunidad que se han vuelto aislados y solos; y todos aquellos que se enfrentan a los problemas de estos tiempos difíciles y les resulta imposible resolverlos por sí mismos. ¡Así como es imposible para una persona llegar a todas nuestras familias parroquiales por su cuenta! Por lo tanto, les pido que participen conmigo en nuestra iniciativa pastoral para llegar a todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad parroquial por teléfono. Queremos preguntarle a la gente sobre su bienestar, los problemas que enfrentan, los problemas de nuestra comunidad. Year of St. Joseph

A tender and loving father

Joseph saw Jesus grow daily “in wisdom and in years and in divine and human favor” (Lk 2:52). As the Lord had done with Israel, so Joseph did with Jesus: he taught him to walk, taking him by the hand; he was for him like a father who raises an infant to his cheeks, bending down to him and feeding him (cf. Hos 11:3-4). In Joseph, Jesus saw the tender love of God: “As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him” (Ps 103:13). In the synagogue, during the praying of the Psalms, Joseph would surely have heard again and again that the God of Israel is a God of tender love, who is good to all, whose “compassion is over all that he has made” (Ps 145:9). The history of salvation is worked out “in hope against hope” (Rom 4:18), through our weaknesses. All too often, we think that god works only through out better parts, yet most of his plans are realized in and despite our frailty. Thus Saint Paul could say: “To keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me: ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:7-9). Since this is part of the entire economy of salvation, we must learn to look upon our weaknesses with tender mercy. The evil one makes us see and condemn our frailty, whereas the Spirit brings it to light with tender love. Tenderness is the best way to touch the frailty within us. Pointing fingers and judging others are frequently signs of an inability to accept our own weaknesses, our own frailty. Only tender love will save us from the snares of the accuser (cf. Rev 12:10). That is why it is so important to encounter God’s mercy, especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where we experience his truth and tenderness. Paradoxically, the evil one can also speak the truth to us, yet he does so only to condemn us. We know that God’s truth does not condemn, but instead welcomes, embraces, sustains and forgives us. That truth always presents itself to us like the merciful father in Jesus’ parable (cf. Lk 15:11-32). It comes out to meet us, restores our dignity, sets us back on our feet and rejoices for us, for, as the father says: “this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found” (v. 24). Even through Joseph’s fears, God’s will, his history and his plan were at work. Joseph, then teaches us that faith in God includes believing that he can work even through our fears, our frailties and our weaknesses. He also teaches us that amid the tempests of life, we must never be afraid to let the Lord steer our course. At times, we want to be in complete control, yet God always sees the bigger picture.

Padre en la ternura

Jose vio a Jesus progresar dia tras dia “en sabiduria, en estatura y en gracia ante Dios y los hombres” (Lc 2,52). Como hizo el Señor con Israel, asi el “le enseño a caminar, y lo tomaba en sus brazos: era para el como el padre que alza a un niño hasta sus mejillas, y se inclina hacia el para darle de comer: (cf. Os 11,3-4). Jesus vio la ternura de Dios en Jose: “Como un padre siente ternura por sus hijos, asi el Señor siente ternura por quienes lo temen” (Sal 103,3). En la sinagoga, durante la oración de los Salmos, Jose ciertamente Habra oido el eco de que el Dios de Israel es un Dios de ternura, que es Bueno para todos y “su ternura alcanza a todas las criaturas” (Sal 145,9). La historia de la salvacion se cumple creyendo “contra toda esperanza” (Rm 4,18) a traves de nuestras debilidades. Muchas veces pensamos que Dios se basa solo en la parte Buena y vencedora de nosotros, cuando en realidad la mayoria de sus designios se realizan a traves y a pesar de nuestra debilidad. Esto es lo que hace que San Pablo diga: “Para que no me deleite tengo una espina clavada en el cuerpo, un emisario de Satanas que me golpea para que no me deleite. Tres veces le he pedido al Señor que la aparte de mi, y el me ha dicho: “íTe basta mi gracia!, porque mi poder se manifiesta plenamente en la debilidad” (2 Co 12,7-9). Si esta es la perspectiva de la economia de la salvacion, debemos aprender a aceptar nuestra debilidad con intensa ternura. El Maligno nos hace mirar nuestra fragilidad con un juicio negativo, mientras que el Espiritu la saca a la luz con ternura. La ternura es el major modo para tocar lo que es fragil en nosotros. El dedo que señala y el juicio que hacemos de los demas son a menudo un signo de nuestra incapacidad para aceptar nuestra propia debilidad, nuestra propia fragilidad. Solo la ternura nos salvara de la obra del Acusador (cf. Ap 12, 10). Por esta razon es importante encontrarnos con la Misericordia de Dios, especialmente en el sacramento de la Reconciliacion, teniendo una experiencia de verdad y ternura. Paradojicamente, incluso el Maligno puede decrinos la verdad, pero, si lo hace, es para condenarnos. Sabemos, sin embargo, que la Verdad que viene de Dios no nos condena, sino que nos acoge, nos abraza, nos sostiene, nos perdona. La Verdad siempre se nos presenta como el Padre misericordioso de la parabola (cf. Lc 15,11-32): viene a nuestro encuentro, nos devuelve la dignidad, nos pone nuevamente de pie, celebra con nosotros, porque “mi hijo estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida, estaba perdido y ha sido encontrado” (v. 24). Incluso a traves de la angustia de Jose, pasa la voluntad de Dios, su historia, y su plan estaba en movimiento. Asi Jose nos enseña que, en medio de las tormentas de la vida, no debemos tener miedo de ceder a Dios el timon de nuestra barca. A veces, nosotros quisieramos tener todo bajo control, per El tiene siempre una mirada mas amplia.

We need only ask Saint Joseph for the grace of graces: our conversion. Let us now make our prayer to him: Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.

The statement follows: “As the American Rescue Plan Act was being written, Catholic bishops reached out to every House and Senate office to express our support for providing additional relief to help poor and vulnerable people who are most at risk of harm from this pandemic, and our strong conviction that this relief should also protect the unborn and their right to life. “We are grateful this legislation addresses many positive provisions including unemployment assistance, child and earned income tax credit enhancements, nutrition funding, vaccine distribution funding, health care funding, housing assistance, international assistance to regions stricken by COVID, conflict, and hunger. There are provisions in this bill that will save people from extremely desperate situations and will likely save lives. “However, it is unconscionable that Congress has passed the bill without critical protections needed to ensure that billions of taxpayer dollars are used for life-affirming health care and not for abortion. “Unlike previous COVID relief bills, sponsors of the American Rescue Plan Act refused to include the longstanding, bit-partisan consensus policy to prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding abortions domestically and internationally. Tras la aprobación de la Ley del Plan de Rescate Estadounidense en la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos hoy, el arzobispo José H. Gómez de Los Ángeles, presidente de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos y los presidentes de seis comités de la USCCB, emitieron un comunicado.
