Our Mission Statement We are a Catholic Community that is called by God to follow Jesus Christ. We believe that we are called to worship God together, to lead God's people along the path of hope laid down by Jesus, to share his mes-sage through preaching, through the education and formation of our people, young and old, and through car-ing service and sensitive outreach to those in need Rev. Paul F. Warren - Pastor

A Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee's house and

reclined at table. Now there was a sinful wom-an in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an ala-baster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner." Jesus said to him in reply, "Simon, I have something to say to you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. "Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days' wages and the other owed fifty. Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?" Simon said in reply, "The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven." He said to him, "You have judged rightly."... Luke 7:36 - 8.3)

Dear Parishioners of St. Stephen: June 19 is Fathers’ Day. That’s next week. Time to celebrate with gratitude the gifts of our Dads’ love and support. This year June 19 will also be a day to come to-gether as a parish and celebrate another transition in this St. Stephen community of faith.

Yes, it will be a time to say good by to me, your Pastor. July 1 I will be moving to St. Patrick’s parish in Larkspur as Administrator, and then on September 1 I will move to St. Brendan parish to begin retirement. However, I am most conscious that our parish is going through another experience of transition with all its promise and challenge. Our new Pastor, Fr. Tony LaTorre will be arriving July 1 and take the

reigns of leadership. Change is both gift and challenge. Let’s make the 9:30 Mass on June 19 a celebration not just of me but of all of us...the wonderful parish of St. Stephen, going through transition and change.

A history of a parish community is more often than not a history of change on many levels. Here is but one level, that of Pastors:

Richard Power (1950-51)

Joseph Donworth (Admin ’51-’52) and (Pastor 1052-72)

Joseph O’Reilly (1972-’87)

William Knapp (1987-’92)

Mario Farana (1992-’93)

John Wester (1993-’97)

Joseph Walsh (1997-’10)

Paul Warren (2010-’16)

As for this last guy...I first came to St. Stephen’s in 2001 after having left the Franciscan Order and requesting incardination into the Archdiocese of San Francisco. I had started in the Diocesan seminary in

1961 but transferred in 1965 to the Franciscan Seminary in southern California. I loved the experience and the brotherhood (living in Seattle, Toronto, Scottsdale, and Danville) but God was nudging me onto a new and dif-ferent path. In one sense I was returning to the path I first started when I first considered Diocesan priesthood. My first assignment in the Archdiocese was here at St. Stephen. Those were happy years ministering along with Fr. Walsh, Fr. Sean Corcoran, and Deacon Gary West.

The process of incardination required two different assignments within 5 years, so they next assigned me to St. Gregory’s parish in San Mateo with then Msgr. Bob McElroy, now Bishop of San Diego. Archbishop Niederauer next asked me to Pastor St. Teresa’s in the eastern part of the City followed by Pastorship here at St. Stephen along with Frs. Ed Murray and Len Calegari. What gems they were! Now I am blessed to continue ministry here with Fr. Michael Strange and Deacon Rory Desmond. I have been blessed indeed.

Change, change, change...now another change. Come celebrate God’s presence in our community on June 19 at the 9:30 Mass followed by a reception as we say farewell to one another and welcome God’s grace opening us onto new horizons.

Wishing you and your family God’s continued blessings, I am sincerely yours in Christ,

Your pastor Father Paul F. Warren

HOSPITALITY MINISTERS for our 9:30 a.m. Mass

Today, June 12 - Vicky Francisco Sunday, June 19 - Altar Society Sunday, June 26 - Connie D’Aura

"Each Sunday following the 9:30 am Mass, we enjoy a time of community building as we share conversa-tion over coffee and donuts. It costs about $100.00 to provide this refreshment, while the donations to offset our costs come to about $30.00. If everyone would contribute a little, it would greatly help sup-port this important activity. while lessening the fi-nancial impact on the parish. budget. Many thanks!

Second Collection Thanks to your generosity last weekend we were able to add $2,268 to our Building

Maintenance Fund. We are most grateful for your continued generosity.

FATHER PAUL WARREN’S FAREWELL RECEPTION

All are cordially invited to at-tend a “Farewell Reception” for Father Paul Warren next Sun-day, June 19th, after the 9:30 Mass. The reception will be held in Donworth Hall located under the gymnasium.

Father Paul will be leaving St. Stephen Church on June 30th, and will retire at the end of this summer.

Please come to celebrate together, and honor Father Paul for his many years of dedication and commitment to St. Stephen Parish.

Holy Year Relics at the National Shrine of St. Francis National Shrine of St. Francis, 610 Valle-jo St, San Francisco ShrineSF.org The Western America Province of the Capuchin Franciscans has custody of relics of St. Pio of Pietrelcina and St. Leopold Mandic, two Capuchin Franciscan saints chosen by Pope Francis as co-Patrons for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mer-cy. The relics will be at the National Shrine of St. Francis in September and November.

St. Vincent De Paul Our St. Stephen’s St. Vincent De Paul Conference would like to thank you for your contributions to the collection on May 28th and 29th ($2,134). It is because of your generosity and compassion that we are able to help the poor. In fact, we just provided groceries to 11 needy families at St. Peter’s. The families were very appreciative of the assistance we were able to give them and our conference is very appre-ciative of your benevolence. Thank you so much for your continued support.

HOPE AND FORGIVENESS There were some interesting conceptions of sin prev-alent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today’s first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, “The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and for-giveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too diffi-cult to imagine. But there he is in today’s Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s “Treasure” no doubt raised an eyebrow or two with the image of the deacons scurrying through the streets of Rome, or perhaps galloping on horse-back, with fragments of eucharistic bread from the bishop’s liturgy. These would be dropped into the chalice at outlying celebrations, presided over by pres-byters, to express unity with the bishop, and perhaps also to remind the presbyters that they were not free agents. The Council of Laodicea forbade the custom of the fermentum in the year 348. Generally, one of the rules of interpreting law is that people don’t make laws about things that aren’t happening. So, by mid-fourth century, we have an important clue that what had once been a Roman custom had become wide-spread. Interestingly, when the Church of England (and its related bodies) went through a liturgical renewal in the mid-nineteenth century, they reclaimed this custom from the mists of history. Today, it is the custom in some Anglican dioceses for a fragment of the host from the bishop’s Holy Week liturgy (what we call the Chrism Mass) to be carried to every parish. On “Maundy Thursday” (our Holy Thursday), the frag-ment is dropped into the chalice to signify the parish’s communion with the bishop. This modern revival of the fermentum is different from the “co-mingling” ac-tion we are used to, in which a fragment of the conse-crated bread is dropped into the chalice just before Communion. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.

Lighting Improvement Project

We've almost completed our LED lighting Project which replaced all of the inefficient lamps/fixtures. As you can see from our most recent PG&E billing history, we continue to reduce consumption from the start of 2016 and are paying less for energy. The project has improved our worship environment in the church and created a safer environment on our church
