St. Stephen’s will be holding training sessions for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy

Communion (EMs) on Tuesday, July 9, at 6:30PM in the main Church. Are you a fully initiated Catholic (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) in good standing, and a registered member of the Parish? Do you have a deep love for the Eucharist?

If you answered “Yes” to all of these questions, please consider joining this important and very special ministry!

XIII DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 30 DE JUNIO 2019

El evangelio de hoy empieza indicando el momento aproximado en que suceden los hechos que se narran a continuación. Dice el texto que “se iba cumpliendo el tiempo de ser llevado al cielo”. Es claro que se refiere a su muerte, resurrección y ascensión. Jesús estuvo pendiente siempre de él y lo designó como su “hora”. Cuando llegue “su hora”, Él se entregará voluntariamente. Esa muerte tenía que ocurrir en Jerusalén y por eso, al aproximarse el momento fijado por el Padre, Jesús se puso en marcha. La palabra que Lucas emplea y que se traduce como “tomó la decisión de ir” tiene el matiz de gran firmeza y de clara conciencia de lo que allí iba a suceder.

Nuestra fe no nos extrañe que sea ridiculizada y atacada. Nosotros debemos dar razón de ella. Y tengan en cuenta que los que nos atacan, lo hacen muchas veces porque ellos vacilan y buscan una defensa atacando nuestra fe.

No es de extrañar que la Iglesia, inspirada en estas palabras y otras semejantes de Jesús, haya ido construyendo un ideal de sacerdotes que tengan presentes estos valores evangélicos. Ha sido la fuerza del Espíritu la que ha inspirado y dado vida a personas así desde los comienzos de la Iglesia. No fue la autoridad la que descubrió ni creó en la Iglesia la vida religiosa ni el celibato sacerdotal. Todo empezó en el corazón de fieles sencillos que quisieron hacer de su vida un holocausto a Dios. Sin bienes, sin familia, hambrientos de Dios se retiraron al desierto para estar con Dios. Allí iban otros fieles a aprender cómo encontrar a Dios, ellos mismos iban a las ciudades en los momentos de persecución para sostener la fe de sus hermanos. Las comunidades cristianas empezaron a elegirlos presbíteros y obispos. Así comenzó la vida religiosa y el celibato en la Iglesia. Es la consecuencia radical de la llamada a seguir a Cristo, asumiendo su misión apostólica. Nada ni nadie los debe detener, nada ni nadie lo debe impedir. Las vocaciones religiosas y sacerdotales son un don y una bendición para el elegido y para la Iglesia. Pidan ustedes esta gracia para la Iglesia. Hoy hay muchas ovejas que carecen de pastor y no se nutren de forma debida; y hay ovejas perdidas que necesitan que se las busque.

Una familia cristiana no estorba que el Señor invite a uno de sus miembros a un seguimiento radical. Al revés, debe sentirse privilegiada y apoyar sobre todo con su oración el que esa vocación se desarrolle hasta el final.

Campus Ministry Position The Diocese of San Angelo is seeking a full-time Campus Minister to serve three college campuses: University of Texas at Permian Basin (Odessa, TX), Odessa College, and Midland College (Midland, TX). Midland and Odessa are 20 minutes apart. This position requires a practicing Catholic with a B.A. in Pastoral Studies or Theology (Masters preferred), experience in ministry, pastoral and administrative skills. The Director of Campus Ministry is responsible for the pastoral leadership of the campus faith community in an academic setting. This includes liturgy, music, faith formation, RCIA and sacramental preparation where appropriate, social ministry and fellowship, pastoral care to students, faculty, and administrative responsibilities. The poor are more than the homeless, the hungry, and those without money for medicine and utilities. They are also the sick, the unwanted, the unloved, the addicted. Some of them live within the walls of our own homes. If the poor go without, it’s not because God has abandoned them. It may well be we have failed to hear or respond to God’s invitation to let Him help them through us. We all love Jesus. We all hope to be with Him for all eternity. He has told us not to expect to see Him in heaven if we can’t recognize Him NOW in the sick and the lonely – such as in the mentally ill man walking the streets talking to an unseen companion, in the elderly woman sitting ignored in the nursing home, or even in the embittered neighbor who irritates us so much. We are called to see and love Jesus in all of these people even when we don’t feel like it. Love is a decision; not a feeling. The poor are a gift that God has bestowed on us so that though them we might learn to come closer to Him. God bless all of you who cherish God’s special children we call the poor through your contributions to help the needy, either personally or through Helping Hands. Thank you very, very much!
