An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

2021 Mass Book

As many of you know, the Mass Book typically opens right after Easter for the following year. As St. Stephen’s is currently closed until further notice, this cannot take place. Once things return to “normal”, we will schedule and announce the date and time the Mass Book will be open. Thank you for your patience as we make our way through these unprecedented times.

May

This is the first weekend in May. It also would have been the weekend when we would be celebrating the First Holy Communion for our young children. In all parishes, it is one of the most joyous events of the years. Unfortunately, this year it will have to wait. May is also the month devoted to Mary, the Mother of God. Catholics are especially encour-aged during this month to recite the Rosary. In this unusual and challenging time, we especially need to offer our prayers to Mary. Remember being human like us she experienced difficult and challenging moments in her life. She truly understands. Many of you have been watching the live streaming of Friday's Holy Hour when the Rosary is recited. During the month of May, don't wait until Friday! Make it an evening practice with your family. It doesn't take long, you know.... Honor Mary this month by doing a May Crowning in your home or garden. Pick a day and make it special for you and Mary. Saturdays are the day in the Church we especially honor the Blessed Mother and May 13 is the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Your can even choose May 10, which is Mother’s Day! Make a wreath of real, silk or colored flowers for a crown. Prepare a spot for your statue of Mary and add a candle, flowers, etc. You can keep it simple or get as creative as you want. Pray the Hail Mary, Memorare, Hail Holy Queen or an entire Rosary. Add music by Googling “Marian Hymns” and have music playing during the crowning. Our Blessed Mother cooked and baked for Jesus and St. Joseph. Prepare a special meal and have a spe-cial treat in honor of Our Lady. Anything you do, say and eat that day will be made special by offering it all to Our Blessed Mother.

*******

May the peace of the Risen Christ fill your hearts with love, joy, and hope this Easter Season!

Prayer for Healing of Coronavirus

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace.

Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.

Jesus Christ, heal us.

Mother’s Day Spiritual Bouquet

of Masses

Remember your mom or other special ladies in your life this Mother’s Day by enrolling them in a Spiritual Bouquet of Masses. Each day from May 10 through May 15 your intentions will be included in the live streamed Mass at 9:00am. As you can’t pick up “Mother’s Day Intentions Envelopes” at church, we have set up two options to enroll your loved ones: Send in a note including the names of each person you would like included in the Spiritual Bouquet and your check to St. Stephen Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick, NY 10990. Via our website and upon entering Donate in the upper left corner, click on the Spiritual Bouquet tab. Please set the amount and list the names of the persons you would like to enroll in the comment section. With either method, the donation amount is up to you. The notes will be collected and comments printed and set on the altar during the Bouquet of Masses just as we have done with the envelopes used in previous years.

Fourth Sunday of Easter

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures in-formed us that they were—contrary to their popular im-age—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large num-bers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25). Gospel — The shepherd leads the sheep out into pastures of abundant life (John 10:1-10). SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES May 3

Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can an-ything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). St. Stephens Parish and School participates in Great Lakes Scrips Shop With Scrip

Fundraising Program

Did you know...Our parishioners and school families are able to purchase gift cards for America's most popular retailers through Great Lakes Scrip Center® (GLSC) and use them for their everyday purchases.

Our organization earns money with each gift card pur-chase. Scrip gift cards are the same gift cards you can purchase from the retailer.

Why is this important now? Under normal circumstances, gift cards are available for pur-chase in our parish office and after weekend masses. Since we are not able to sell cards at this time in person, we are writing to let families know that you can continue, or begin to support this important fundraiser by purchasing e-certificates directly through the ShopWithScrip website, for purchases of food or other essential items. E-certificates can also be purchased and emailed to a friend or family member as a gift.

Please consider purchasing gift cards online for your own shop-ping, or for gifts.

How to Enroll: Visit www.shopwithscrip.com. If you have not previously signed up to support St. Stephens, click the blue button, top right "Join a Program". Enter the enrollment code for St. Stephens FD1AC86A16447.

Begin Shopping: E-certificates that are able to be purchased and delivered online are designed as a ScripNow eCard. Some retailers that offer ScripNow eCards include: Amazon, Starbucks, Target, Walmart, Sams Club, Home De-pot, Lowes, Kohls, Gap, Old Navy, CVS, Lands End, LLBean, Dunkin Donuts, GrubHub.

Make your purchase using a debit, credit card or electronic transfer from a checking or savings account. Please note: checks are not accepted when purchasing e-certificates and we cannot accept checks at the church, or order physical cards at this time.

St. Stephens is automatically credited with your purchase based on the discount percentage of the cards you purchased.

*The funds you raise for St. Stephens, based on your purchases and the percentage/card, are tax deductible as al-lowed by law.

Unfortunately, ShopRite and Price Chopper do not participate in the Great Lake Scrips Program so these cards will be unavailable until the parish office reopens.

We are here to help and assist in any way. If you have ques-tions about the Gift Card Fundraiser, please ask!

Be well and stay safe, Mary Juliano [email protected] Kendra Percarpio [email protected]

Virtual Book Club Our staff is continuing to explore ways for our parish family to stay connected, by offering meaningful at-home experiences. We are excited to introduce our virtual book club!

The St. Stephens Book Club is a completely digital experi-ence that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Read along with fellow parishioners and then tune-in for scheduled online discussions and reflections. Our first book selection is The Grace of Enough by Haley Stewart.

A synopsis of the book as described on Amazon: Do you ever feel caught in an endless cycle of working harder and longer to get more while enjoying life less? The Stewart family did—and they decided to make a radical change. Popu-lar Catholic blogger and podcaster Haley Stewart explains how a year-long internship on a sustainable farm changed her family’s life for the better, allowing them to live gospel values more intentionally.

You, too, will be inspired to: live simply, offer hospitality, revive food culture and the family table, reconnect with the land, nurture community, prioritize beauty, develop a sense of wonder, and much more.

Drawing from Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, Stewart identifies elements of Catholic social teaching that will enhance your life and create a ripple effect of grace to help you overcome the effects of today’s “throwaway” culture and experience a deeper satisfaction and stronger faith.

The book is available in print, Kindle, and audio versions on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble. Please note that print orders are arriving more quickly on Barnes and Noble.

The book discussions will begin in early May. We will "meet" weekly to discuss the book. We plan to offer multiple sessions and will be using the Zoom platform. Parishioners will be able to participate using phone access if they do not have a comput-er, tablet or smart phone. If you are interested in participat-ing, please go to the website and fill in the sign up form to let us know what days/times work best for you.

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made

known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and

your minds in Christ Jesus.” ~Philippians 4:6

Warwick Food Pantry Needs You

Dear neighbors at St. Stephen’s Parish, At present what the Warwick Ecumenical Food Pantry really needs is your money. During this emergency period, we expect a surge in demand. We will jettison our usual in-pantry client choice model in favor of a socially distant safe “curbside delivery” model to families in their vehicles. We will be offering a standard pre-bag of groceries, the number of bags being determined by family size.

Accordingly, we will be purchasing a limited number of grocery items in bulk. Although we never will turn food donations away—even during the emergency period we will accept and store shelf stable donations—in the cur-rent environment money really hits the spot.

Please! Donations by checks to the pantry at 135 Forester Avenue Warwick NY 10990 or with credit and debit cards online at www.warwickpantry.com. With gratitude and thanks from our hearts. Glenn P. & Susan D. Dickes

Florida Community Food Pantry

In 2019 the pantry served 979 Warwick families in addi-tion to others from neighboring areas and are not sure how many new families they will be serving. We are open every week on Thursday mornings from 9am to 12pm and have stayed open each week during the pandemic. Clients place orders from the car and wait while volun-teers pack and deliver their supplies.

The FCFP partners with Shoprite of Warwick for food recovery, as well as purchasing from the Hudson Valley Food Bank.

A dollar donated to the pantry will stretch further than your dollar at the store, so please consider a monetary donation which can be made through PayPal or by check made out to Florida Community Food Pantry, PO Box 94, Florida, NY 10921

We are always in awe of the goodness of those in our community who time and time again have answered our call for help.

Blessings for all to stay healthy. Beth Maas, FCFP Director
