My Dear Family of St. Therese, In response to many questions about the vandalism here at our Parish Center a few weeks ago, this past week we have installed security cameras in the church and in the center. You’ll notice them in lobbies and in the church itself. It is a sad event, but it’s a choice between the cameras or locking the church, I think I would rather have the cameras. But I still encourage you to stop into the church whenever you can and say a prayer and check things out. I am proud to say that we are one of the few churches that are open during the day – from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
From the windows in the Parish Center I can see people coming and going to and from the church throughout the day. When I walk from the Center to Rectory I’ve noticed cars from Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Jersey and several other states. When I have the opportunity to meet the people their response is that it is their pilgrimage to the “Shrine” of St. Therese for prayers answered or with a prayer request. “St. Therese of Montauk” is quite a popular destination for the faithful. Looking ahead through August, we are going to have a visit from our friend, Fr. Joe Fitzgerald. Fr. Joe is Vocation Director for the Diocese and has been to St. Therese before. I am glad to welcome him because it affords me the opportunity to visit my brother in Florida. While it is a joy to be in Montauk, the drawback is that I can only take vacation when I find coverage. Funny how it is not a problem in the summer, but the winter is a different story – go figure! Fr. Joe is not the only blessing of the summer (along with Fr. Brian who was here in July) but the numbers at Mass each morning and each weekend have increased. For me it is wonderful to see a full church and so many families! Our summer residence and visitors are truly a blessing to St. Therese! Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Tom & The Monsignor

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE
Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water (1 Kings 19:4-8). Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading — Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love (Ephesians 4:30 — 5:2). Gospel — Jesus said, “I am the living bread; whoever eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:41-51). New Agency Protects Conscience & Religious Rights
A new Conscience & Religion Freedom Division (OCR) in the Dept. of Health & Human Services (HHS) was established in January to restore and more vigorously and effectively enforce federal laws that protect the unalienable rights of conscience and religious freedom. "America's doctors and nurses are dedicated to saving lives and should not be bullied out of the practice of medicine simply because they object to performing abortions against their conscience," said OCR Director Roger Severino. "Laws protecting religious freedom and conscience rights are just empty words on paper if they aren't enforced. No one should be forced to choose between helping sick people and living by one's deepest moral or religious convictions. The new division will help guarantee that victims of unlawful discrimination will find justice. For too long, governments large and small have treated conscience claims with hostility instead of protection. But change is coming and it begins here and now." "The Founding Fathers knew that a nation that respects conscience rights is more diverse and more free," said acting HHS Secretary Eric Hargan.
