Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time

2

But as it is written: What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.

Gospel Matthew 5:17-37 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with brother will be liable to judgment. “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. “Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes, 'and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.”

Readings for the week of February 16, 2020 Sunday: Sir 15:15-20/Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34 [1b]/1 Cor 2:6-10/ Mt 5:17-37 or 5:20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a, 37 Monday: Jas 1:1-11/Ps 119:67, 68, 71, 72, 75, 76 [77a]/Mk 8:11-13 Tuesday: Jas 1:12-18/Ps 94:12-13a, 14-15, 18-19 [12a]/Mk 8:14-21 Wednesday: Jas 1:19-27/Ps 15:2-3a, 3bc-4ab, 5 [1b]/Mk 8:22-26 Thursday: Jas 2:1-9/Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7 [7a]/Mk 8:27-33 Friday: Jas 2:14-24, 26/Ps 112:1-2, 3-4, 5-6 [cf. 1b]/Mk 8:34—9:1 Saturday: 1 Pt 5:1-4/Ps 23:1-3a, 4, 5, 6 [1]/Mt 16:13-19 Next Sunday: Lv 19:1-2, 17-18/Ps 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-13 [8a]/1 Cor 3:16-23/Mt 5:38-48

Reading I Sirach 15:15-20 If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live; he has set before you fire and water to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand. Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him. Immense is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power, and all-seeing. The eyes of God are on those who fear him; he understands man’s every deed. No one does he command to act unjustly, to none does he give license to sin.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34 Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! Blessed are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD. Blessed are they who observe his decrees, who seek him with all their heart. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! You have commanded that your precepts be diligently kept. Oh, that I might be firm in the ways of keeping your statutes! Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! Be good to your servant, that I may live and keep your words. Open my eyes, that I may consider the wonders of your law. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! Instruct me, O LORD, in the way of your statutes, that I may exactly observe them. Give me discernment, that I may observe your law and keep it with all my heart. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

Reading II 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 Brothers and sisters: We speak a wisdom to those who are mature, not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for, if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written:

Sixth Ordinary Sunday Reflections

• The essence of God’s law is a law of grace, love and freedom. • Jesus taught reverence and respect for God’s law - reverence for God himself, reverence for the Lord's Day, reverence or respect for parents, respect for life, for property, for another person's good name, respect for oneself and for one's neighbor. • Reverence and respect for God's commandments teach us the way

of love which is love of God and love of neighbor. • Jesus loves righteousness and hates wickedness. The Holy Spirit

helps us in our weakness, strengthens us in temptation, and transforms us, day by day, into the likeness of Jesus Christ, our Merciful Savior and Lord.

May God bless you all! Fr. Albert. Holy Hour for Penance and Healing at St. Therese Parish Bishop Callahan asks that each pastor lead a Holy Hour for Penance and Healing on Saturday, February 22nd, in response to clergy sexual abuse and the public release of names of clergy with a substantiated allegation of child sexual abuse. The Holy Hour for Penance and Healing here at St. Therese will begin at 2:00 p.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m.

From Fr. Albert

STAY WITH US LORD Dear brothers and sisters, Our God is a God who enlightens us with his words of wisdom. He leads us to see our life events in the light of God’s word and enlightens us to set our hearts on fire. Our God is a God who breaks Himself for us each day and Jesus is our greatest treasure who is accompanying us in all situations of our lives. I remember a story, which I read long ago. Once there was an estate auction for the possessions of a wealthy man who had just died. Among the items for sale was the painting of a young man. As the auction progressed, all the furniture and antiques were sold off at high prices but when the painting of the young man came up for bidding, no one was interested. It remained with the auction house. A maid whose job was to clean up the auction gallery saw the picture, liked it and asked if she could have it. The chairman of the auction was happy to be relieved of it. When she took the picture home that night she found a piece of paper hidden behind it which said “This is a painting of my only son who died at a very young age. Whoever owns this picture shall get all the money from the sale of his estate.” Thus, the maid who was freely given this picture became rich overnight. God freely gives his only Son for us. If we take him into our hearts, we would find the greatest treasure. Let us open up our hearts to receive this great treasure called Jesus for when we have him we have everything. We are all pilgrims, journeying towards holiness. I would like you to remember the gospel passage “Journey to Emmaus” (Luke 24: 13-35). The two disciples were walking away from Jerusalem discouraged, disappointed and disillusioned. Their dreams were shattered. The leader from whom they had great expectations had died, just like any other mortal. They had no hope left. But thank God, fortunately they still had the strength to talk about all that had happened, the generosity to allow someone to walk along with them and the frankness to share their story with that someone. Dear friends in our faith journey, like the disciples, let us allow Jesus to enter into our life story and enlighten us. In this gospel passage, Jesus meets the disciples in this situation, on the road of life, in their grief and disappointment. Our God is a God who walks with us. In moments of pain/discouragement all that we need is to find someone on whose shoulders one can rest. Someone who after listening empathetically says ‘I understand,’ ‘I am with you’. I can help you put wings to your dreams. This is just what Jesus did on the journey to Emmaus. He listened to them, understood them and he does the same with us too. So, let us pour out to him all our pain/disillusionment through our prayers as we trust him in faith. Our God is a God, who understands us, who walks with us and carries us through difficult and hard times. Lord Jesus, we thank you for enriching us through the word of God and nourishing us with your body and blood. We have received countless blessings from you. Thank you Lord for all your insights and inspirations. We adore you, we love you, we praise you, and we give you thanks. Lord give us your graces and blessings, so that we may become builders of relationships in our families, communities and in our surroundings.

Old Palms: Please place your old palms in the "Palm Box" by the Library. They will be burned and used as ashes on Ash Wednesday. Your help is appreciated!

Stations of the Cross will again be held on Friday’s at 6:00 p.m. during Lent.
