He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted --and you yourself a sword will pierce-- so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Reading II Hebrews 2:14-18 Since the children share in blood and flesh, Jesus likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the Devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was test-ed through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Everyday Stewardship - Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments Healing Our Blindness The value of stewardship living is difficult to see unless we are experiencing that way of life for ourselves. You can read 100 Everyday Stewardship reflections and go to church every Sunday, but unless you are actively growing in faith and trying to live a life of generous stewardship, you cannot see the power of such a lifestyle. Like most things, we need direct, purposeful experiences to really understand. I worked in a stewardship parish for over 20 years, but it was only after I started treating all I have as God’s, and began to actively offer all I am to Him for His glory, that I really got the message. That doesn’t mean I am a perfect steward. Far from it! However, the stress and anxiety that comes with life has greatly diminished because all is in God’s hands. I choose to act more generously than before, which provides me with a sense of fulfillment and joy. How I act towards my family, friends, and even people I meet daily has changed. Now I am more mindful of their presence, and I seek to give them a part of me that just might change their day and bring them a little closer to Christ. I am transforming into a disciple who seeks to use all I have been given to transform all that is around me. It would be a shame to be blind to the important things for an entire life. Today, consider taking a path of life-changing stewardship. Give it all to God. In the midst of all you have been given, you just might find God in a profound way. Dear Brothers and Sisters

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28)

On February 11, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated in honor of the Marian apparitions that occurred in 1858 to St. Bernadette Soubirous. It is fitting that the World Day of the Sick, instituted by Pope John Paul II in 1992, share this special day. This feast assures us that our Lady is very close to those who suffer from illnesses, and reminds us to always ask for her intercession, even plead for a miracle, for those who are suffering. On this day we are invited to offer our prayers for those, who are suffering from various illnesses, es-pecially those who are lonely and struggle to find meaning in their suffering. Let us also remember and pray for those who have committed their lives to caring for the sick, especially those extending healing to the people with various ailments. Dear friends, our daily struggles, sickness and stumbles teach us, and we share those lessons with others. Vulnerability and humility are not a curse from God, but an invitation. When we walk through those afflictions in faith, hope and love, they become the path of healing, for ourselves and for others. “In your experience of illness, you certainly need a place to find rest. The Church desires to become more and more the “inn” of the Good Samaritan who is Christ (cf. Lk 10:34), that is, a home where you can encounter his grace, which finds expression in closeness, acceptance and relief. In this home, you can meet people who, healed in their frailty by God’s mercy, will help you bear your cross and enable your suffering to give you a new perspective. You will be able to look beyond your illness to a greater horizon of new light and fresh strength for your lives”. - Pope Francis (From the Vatican, 3 January 2020. Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus). Jesus healed the sick during his life and continues to do so through time. When we experience illness of body, mind or spirit, let us trust the providence of God, and through one’s faith be touched by Christ’s healing. In the Letter of St. James (5: 14-15) it is written “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up”. The Sacrament of the Anointing is the sacrament of mercy and healing, which offers prayers for recovery and it gives spiritual strength to the one suffering from illness. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

True Compassion: Compassion Without Fatigue February 21-23 Cost: $190 Deep engagement with the suffering of others may result in the development of a set of symptoms known as “compassion fatigue:” decreased empathy, irritability, feeling overwhelmed by the suffering of others, self-judgment, and physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and poor sleep. Recent neurological research that distinguishes between the cognitive basis for empathy and the cognitive basis for compassion suggests that we may be able to manage our response to suffering in more positive and productive ways. By responding with true compassion, rather than empathy alone, we may be able not only to help the suffering person but also to find fulfillment, instead of fatigue. This workshop/retreat will help participants learn to respond with true compassion through brief teachings, exercises, meditation, and discussion. We will clarify the distinction between empathy and compassion; identify the signs of “compassion fatigue” and the reasons why this term is a misnomer; discover the importance of self-compassion; and learn to cultivate compassion actively. This session is designed for professional caregivers at all levels, but family and friend caregivers are also welcome. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by supper at 6:30 p.m. The retreat concludes after the noon meal on Sunday.

Spaghetti Dinner Sacred Heart School will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner on March 7th from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The ticket prices are $8 for 13 years old and older, $5 for 6-12 years old and free for under 6 years old. This will be an all you can eat spaghetti that includes choice of marinara or meat sauce, bread sticks, salad, dessert, coffee and milk. Soda, beer and wine coolers will be available for purchase. There will be a basket raffle to help the 6th graders raise money for their Chicago field trip. Drawing for the basket raffle will be at 6:45 p.m.

Feed My Starving Children MobilePack February 21-22, 2020 – Stevens Point Through a Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack™ event at the Stevens Point Airport, Noel Hangar, on February 21-22, 2020, our community will provide 108,000 nutritious meals for God’s starving children around the world. We invite you to join us! We need 545 volunteers to pack meals and help raise $26,000 for this MobilePack™ event. Men’s Silent Retreat February 21-23 Cost $190 The Life and Prayer of St. Alphonsus Liguori St. Alphonsus Liguori has been called the Church’s “Most Zealous Doctor” as well as “The Teacher of Prayer.” Born into nobility on September 27,1696, he was destined for a great future, as planned by his father. Indeed, as a young man, he was a successful lawyer. But when he lost a case due to bribery, his youthful idealism was crushed and he began to question his path in life. Shortly thereafter, he heard a voice saying “leave the world and give yourself to me.” Fortunately for us, he listened and committed himself to following Jesus. Upon being ordained a priest, he spent most of his time ministering to the poor, especially the homeless and marginalized. In 1732 he founded the Redemptorists. Redemption will be a key theme on the retreat, as we will practice a Liguorian style of prayer and meditation centered on the redeeming love of Jesus Christ, as seen not only in his passion and death but also in the 14th chapter of St. Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by supper at 6:30 p.m.

Couples Preparing to Celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage In the Diocese of La Crosse (as in all the dioceses in Wisconsin), one expectation is a couple's participation in a diocesan marriage preparation retreat. The diocesan retreat entitled, Married Love: Two Becoming One would be completed 4-6 months before the celebration of the sacrament.
