AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very syna-gogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multi-ply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God’s people: the good news of the scriptures is in-tended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today’s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. PLEASE RESPECT OUR CHURCH

Lately I have been noticing people talking inside the church, charging their phones in the electrical outlets, men wearing hats and leaving lots of trash. We are reminded that the church is a place to meditate and pray. If you would like to visit with others after or before Mass, please go to the hall so that we might be respectful of the sacred place that is our church. I know that the weather has been cold, but as a sign of respect for God and his church, men are not allowed to wear hats in-side the church. Also, the church is a place to meditate and pray, not to be charging our elec-tronic devices or leaving our trash behind. There are plenty of trash containers in the hall to depos-it our trash. Let us remind ourselves that the church is the house of God and a place to medi-tate, pray, and be respectful.

Gospel: Lk 4:21-30

R. Alleluia, alleluia. The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

R. Aleluya, aleluya.

R. Aleluya.

Jesus began speaking in the syna-gogue, saying: "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?" He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Ca-pernaum.'" And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own na-tive place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Si-don. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.

Monday: Heb 11:32-40; Ps 31:20-24; Mk 5:1-20 Tuesday: Heb 12:1-4; Ps 22:26b-28, 30-32; Mk 5:21-43 Wednesday: Heb 12:4-7, 11-15; Ps 103:1-2, 13-14, 17-18a; Mk 6:1-6 Thursday: Heb 12:18-19, 21-24; Ps 48:2-4, 9-11; Mk 6:7-13 Friday: Heb 13:1-8; Ps 27:1, 3, 5, 8b-9; Mk 6:14-29 Saturday: Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Ps 23:1-6; Mk 6:30-34 Sunday: Is 6:1-2a, 3-8; Ps 138:1-5, 7-8; 1 Cor 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]; Lk 5:1-11
