    StewardShip Sunday: Charitable eState planning

I have only met one person who liked to think about death. Specifically, his own death. My first pastor growing up — who we lovingly called "Fr. Rosy" — lived up to his cheerful name. Always smiling, he was a big presence as he entered the room. How surprised I was as a teenager to find out that he had a coffin in his office. Propped up in the corner, a simple wooden casket sat open. And not just any casket — it was his casket.

He must have seen my face many times as he once again laughed and explained that it reminded him that he is on this earth on God’s time. His life, he said, was a gift, and staring at a reminder of his mortality every day kept him humble in the midst of pastoring one of the largest parishes in St. Louis.

So, with Fr. Rosy's great spirit in mind, I'd like to share with you today a bit about charitable estate planning, also known as planned giving.

First, I'd like to urge everyone — if you have not already done so — to create a will. If you do not want the state to decide who gets your assets and when, you need a will. A will allows you to make those decisions in advance of your passing, allowing you to leave the legacy that you have created.

Through your will and related documents, you will leave a legacy for your family, in some way. Sometimes that is in family heirlooms or financial gifts. You can also leave a legacy for your favorite charity or charities.

BequestsWhat are you passionate about? How can you leave a legacy after you are gone that enlivens

those passions? Our community has had several parishioners over the years leave gifts to the Newman Center — either a specific dollar amount or a percentage of their estate.

Especially if you have minor children or other family members to care for, it may seem daunting to set aside some funds for charity. Talk with your attorney and financial planner as there are many ways to set up your estate where you can ensure that your loved ones are fully taken care of and the residuary estate can be gifted to a charity or charities of your choice. If you do choose to include gifts for nonprofits, it is very important to use the organization's legal name and FEIN number. For instance, instead of saying "Newman," you’ll want to list "St. Thomas More Newman Center (non-profit corporation FEIN #43-0810541) in Columbia, Missouri."

If you do decide to include the parish or any other organization in your will —even if it is on a contingent basis — it is very helpful to notify the charity in advance so that they can know of your intentions for the gift and thank you properly.

Beneficiary or Contingent BeneficiaryAnother way to make a big difference is to name a charity as the beneficiary or contingent

beneficiary on your life insurance, retirement plan, or IRA. Changing or adding a beneficiary is generally a very simple task and can be done by contacting the provider of your plan.

Although you may feel uncomfortable sharing your intentions with a charity prior to your passing, it is truly a gift to know that someone cares deeply enough about an organization to remember them in your will. Regardless of the anticipated gift amount (which will most likely grow or diminish before your passing), the true gift is the legacy which you wish to leave. To acknowledge these gifts, Newman has established the "Cor ad Cor Circle" to recognize all those in our faith community who have decided to leave a legacy at the Newman Center. Although all members do have the option to remain anonymous, this giving circle not only recognizes the blessings of its members, but also stands as witness to others of the possibilities of leaving a legacy at Newman.

Like Fr. Rosy, I hope we can all remember and appreciate that our life is provided by the Lord and remain truly humble to our call to return our gifts to the Lord.

"St. Thomas More has been and continues to be "family"

to me, as it was to my late husband, Dave Jonassen. I look forward to being at Mass during the week and

on weekdays to take part in a liturgy I love, and to be fed not only by the Eucharist, but also by the Body of Christ in

the Newman Community. I'm including St. Thomas

More in my estate planning in the hopes my contribution

will help support others as Newman has supported me

    and my husband."

newMan newSEMERGENCY COORDINATORS AT MASS TRAININGWe have worked out the "bugs" in the plan and will again be scheduling emergency coordinators at all the Masses. A training course for new volunteers and a refresher course for those already trained will be on Sunday, August 12 at 10:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you would like to be a volunteer and want more information, please contact Susan Devaney at 573-696-1424 or [email protected]. If you cannot attend but wish to serve as a volunteer, there will be additional trainings in the fall.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COLLECTIONMembers of the Knights of Columbus are collecting donations for the Missouri Meet Life campaign in the Gathering Space this weekend. The campaign is working to halve the number of abortions in Missouri over a five-year period. Two years ago, the campaign completed its efforts to replace the ultrasound machine at the My Life Clinic here in Columbia! Collections this year will go towards the maintenance and eventual replacement of this machine and others like it statewide. The Council will be matching the first $500 donated to this weekend's collection. Your generosity is appreciated!

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MASSES

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — a Holy Day of Obligation — will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 15 at Noon and 7 p.m. There will be a vigil Mass on Tuesday, August 14 at 5 p.m.

AUGUST YOUTH ENSEMBLE REHEARSALSRehearsals for the Youth Ensemble will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 16 in the Chapel and Wednesday, August 22 in the MPR. All young musicians are encouraged to join the group! Contact Kelley Burns at [email protected] with questions. The Youth Ensemble will lead the Sunday 5 p.m. Mass on August 26.

SERVE AT THE MASS — EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDEDMany Eucharistic Ministers (those who distribute the Eucharist) are needed for all weekend Masses. Eucharistic Ministers are asked to serve about once per month. Any confirmed Catholic who would like to become a Eucharistic Minister would need to attend an orientation session. The next session is scheduled for Monday, August 27 from 7-9 p.m. in the MPR. If you need additional information or have questions, please contact Trent Rash at [email protected].

CHANGE THE MPR KITCHEN & NEWMAN LANDSCAPE:I have a plan. And you are all, potentially, a part of it. In September, I would like to convene two committees. They would be composed of student and adult parishioners and professionals in the respective fields on which the committees will be focused. All the members will be asked to participate as volunteers in this endeavor. The purpose of these two groups would be the comprehensive study, development, and submission of plans to be carried out in budget year 2019-2020. The committees will be working on plans for first, the MPR kitchen, and second, a comprehensive exterior landscape plan for our faith community’s home.

The goal for both groups will be to submit plans to our parish and finance councils by March 2019. The committees would elect a chairperson and recording secretary and set their own meeting agendas and schedules. Although they would not operate with funding, there would be access to financial support for specific items, with approval of the pastor. If you are interested in being a part of these committees, please email me at [email protected] with name, contact information, and in which committee you would be interested. I would like to have both groups up and functioning by early September; please let me know sooner rather than later.

CaMpuS MiniStryFOOD DONATION THANK YOUFor July, 208 pounds of food was taken to the Central Pantry. Thank you to everyone who donated!

NEWMAN NIGHT AT THE FOOD BANKThe next Newman Night at the Food Bank is Monday, August 13, from 6-8 p.m. The Food Bank depends on volunteer groups, such as ours, to repackage food for the recipients. Forty-five Newman volunteers repackaged 5,200 pounds of twix, snickers, three musketeers, and M&M candy on July 9. How sweet! Thanks so much to those who have joined us this summer. During the summer, the need is greater than ever, due to children being home from school and not participating in the school lunch programs. The Food Bank requires our group to exceed 25 volunteers to support the staff required. Volunteers must be at least 9 years old and wear closed-toed shoes as a safety concern. Please arrive by 6 p.m. If you have questions, please call Gloria Young at 573-673-3070. Our usual night is the second Monday of every month. The Food Bank’s address is 2101 Vandiver Drive.

NVC IN NEED OF A RESIDENT LEADER"There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit." (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

Do you have gifts and skills for organizing, leading, and motivating others? Do feel strongly about the Church's role in serving and advocating for our brothers and sisters in need, especially right here in Columbia? The Newman Volunteer Corps board is the commission that coordinates Newman's service and justice efforts. We have wonderful volunteers and board members currently coordinating several ministries. There is a student service and justice intern who speaks for and leads the student efforts in the group. However, we have a great need for a resident leader. The Resident Director helps to set vision, provides long term stability, serves as a point person for questions, and coordinates timely responses to new concerns and injustices. The Resident Director has the support of the NVC board and Fr. Rich. Interested? Contact Fr. Rich at [email protected].

kidS’ CornerFor Kids: Last week we heard that God provided bread in the desert, but Jesus tells us there is something even better! Read the Gospel with your family and talk about it.

For Parents: Jesus wants us to believe that God can do more than provide for our immediate needs; God has the eternal in mind and brings it to us in the Eucharist. Talk about this idea that Jesus shares the life of God, eternal life with us. How might that change your view of Mass next week?

PARISHIONER HELP NEEDED FOR CONFIRMATIONWe are in need of parishioners who can open their houses to a small group of Confirmation students three times a semester for two hours at a time. We want our students to see a Catholic life in action in an everyday home. It will be a normal class curriculum led by a Core member — all we ask of you is to open your house and provide a small snack so that you all can gather around the table together and be living examples of a Catholic life. Questions? Contact Renee Molner at [email protected] or 573-449-5424 ext. 210.
