The other day I was following a truck with a bumper sticker that stood out to me. It read YOU HAVE TO GROW OLD, BUT NOT GROW UP. I think I appreciated it partly because in my own smart aleck manner, sometimes when I am meeting new people and they ask where I grew up, I reply that I never really have.

I also reflected about how so much of our personality, attitude and style is a reflection not so much of a chronological experience as a state of mind and heart. Undoubtedly you have met, and appreciated, individuals who were perhaps in their 70’s, 80’s or above and still full of joy and delight. One can also occasionally come across someone in their 20’s or 30’s who are, to put it nicely, sourpusses.

That awareness struck me as quite timely in our day and age when it can become easy to lose sight of the fact that despite the many challenges that fill these days, health wise, economically, relationally and spiritually, we are truly blessed. And if our Lord were to sit down and talk to us, He would most likely repeat His often found phrase in the scriptures: “Be not afraid.”

To be a Christian is, by its very definition, to be a person of hope and joy. To recognize and count our blessings daily is a superb way to insure we are keeping focused on

what is truly going on in our lives of discipleship, drawing us ever closer to our eternal reward. And if our Lord is to be believed, and I for one think we can, His telling us in John 15 that He wants His joy to be in us, and our joy to be complete is full cause for assurance and hope in a world that often is myopic when it comes to seeing the nature of our God.

Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying we should be naïve and childish, not dealing with life seriously and responsibly. But I am saying that we should daily bring a viewpoint to what the day holds that reflects our awareness that we belong to our God. He has already conquered sin and death for us. We just are called to live in the wonderment and celebration of that awareness. The world is not going to crush us or drive out all light and peace and hope. It can only do that if we give away our God given grace and heritage.

I was reminded of a book I read years ago by Umberto Eco entitled, The Name of the Rose. In it there is an old monk who thinks that all humor and levity are opposed to God’s design. I was struck that, even in a work of fiction, one could think that a person who had dedicated their life to God could have such a misshapen comprehension of where our Creator finds delight in His creatures.

All this is a way of saying that the bumper sticker reminded me to share with you that the world needs some peace and joy and serendipity to flavor our daily routines. And you might be just the person to bring that to someone this coming week. Don’t drop the ball!!!

Our readings today remind us that God is ever-faithful, even when we are not. They challenge us to show our love for this faithful God through actions, and to lean in to our trust in Him even when it seems He is not answering our prayers.

The First Reading teaches that all of humanity is invited to become the Lord’s disciples. But we have to actually take Him up on the invitation by the way we live. “Observe what is right, do what is just… All who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain… for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Our parish is not a country club. It must be a welcome place for all — where we roll up our sleeves together to serve and worship our God.

God knows we will not always get this right. We will choose selfishness and stay in our comfort zones at times, rather than embracing the daily call to discipleship. But God will never withhold His love and His gifts from us.

Our Second Reading shows us, “For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” God is patient and merciful with us when we falter. He brings good from our failures as long as we continue to attempt the challenging path of discipleship. The reading closes with this reminder: “For God delivered all to disobedience that He might have mercy upon all.”

And because God is indeed faithful and merciful, He wants to lead us to the joy of heaven to spend eternity with Him. For that, we must be strong in faith and live our lives as an act of love and gratitude to Him. In other words, we must allow Him to transform us into saints. This is what the stewardship way of life is meant to do. Sometimes, that will feel painful to us. Often, it will be challenging.

Jesus certainly challenged the Canaanite woman in today’s Gospel passage from Matthew. She called out to Him on behalf of her daughter, who was being tormented by a demon. What did Jesus do in reply to this mother’s desperate plea? Nothing. He “did not say a word in answer to her.” But she was undeterred and continued to call out to Him — so much so that the disciples asked Him to send her away. Jesus does not send her away, but He does not give her what she asks for immediately either.

Instead, He continues to challenge the woman’s faith. And she rises to the challenge to such an impressive degree that Jesus exclaims, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” Imagine hearing those words proclaimed over us by God. Truly, there could be no higher honor than hearing our Lord say that to us.

So we must accept the difficulties that come with the Christian life. Some days will be a true challenge to our trust in God. But those are the days when God is making saints of us. Let’s embrace the hard days, especially in the face of these challenging times we face today during the pandemic. The deep joy that eventually comes, the eternal reward He promises, will be so worth it. And He wants us — all of us— to have it..

By Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila

When God chose to enter the world to save us, he chose Mary, whose deep faith provided the way for Jesus to come among us. She believed in the words of the angel, “For nothing will be impossible with God” (Lk 1: 37). As she expressed her deep confidence in the promises of God, the Word became flesh. In our current time of crisis, our Church, world and our country need faith in God and the protection and intercession of Mary. And so, beginning on August 15, I am launching a Rosary Crusade to ask Mary to urgently bring our needs to Jesus.

The last several months of the coronavirus epidemic, the civil unrest that has broken out in different parts of the archdiocese and our nation, and the challenges the Church is facing have made the need for Mary’s intercession abundantly clear. Mary is our Mother and desires only our good like the Father.

In her appearance to Juan Diego, Our Lady reminded him and reminds us today, “Listen and let it penetrate your heart…do not be troubled or weighed down with grief. Do not fear any illness or vexation, anxiety or pain. Am I not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not your fountain of life? Are you not in the folds of my mantle? In the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else you need?”

Saint Padre Pio, who was known for his devotion to the Rosary offers us this advice: “In times of darkness, holding the Rosary is like holding our Blessed Mother’s hand.”

We turn to Mary in our difficulty because she is our spiritual mother, who with her “yes” to the Lord embraced the mysterious ways of God’s almighty power. She is “the supreme model of this faith, for she believed that ‘nothing will be impossible with God,’ and was able to magnify the Lord: ‘For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #273).

We know, too, from history that Mary has answered prayers brought to her through the Rosary and that she has personally asked people to pray it for the most serious needs, especially for the conversion of souls.

Pope Pius V famously asked all Christians to pray the Rosary in 1571 to prevent Christianity from being overrun by the invading Ottoman Turks, and the Christian naval forces were subsequently victorious in the Battle of Lepanto. In the apparitions at Fatima, Mary identified herself as “The Lady of the Rosary” and asked the shepherd children to whom she appeared to pray a daily Rosary for world peace and the end of World War I.

During his pontificate, Saint John Paul II spoke of the Rosary as his favorite prayer. In his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, he added, “The Rosary has accompanied me in moments of joy and in moments of difficulty. To it I have entrusted any number of concerns; in it I have always found comfort” (RVM, 2).

This past May, Pope Francis encouraged praying the Rosary, saying, “Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual

family and will help us overcome this time of trial.”

During this time of trial, we need to hear the words of Jesus spoken often in the Gospel, words spoken to Mary by the Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, “Be not afraid.” We need to pray especially for a deeper trust and hear the words of Elizabeth spoken to Mary in our own hearts. “…blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” (Lk 1:45). The Lord is with us in this time as he has promised! Praying the rosary helps us, with the aid of our Mother, to relive in our own lives the mysteries of Christ’s life.

I personally invite all Catholics in the Archdiocese of Denver to pray the Rosary every day between the Solemnity of the

Assumption of Mary, August 15, through the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, September 15. I would be remiss if I did not thank Bishop Carl Kemme of Wichita for inspiring this Rosary Crusade by launching one in his diocese at the beginning of August.

As we unite in asking Mary for her intercession and protection, please pray for the following intentions:

• For a growth in faith, hope and charity in the heart and soul of every human being, and most especially in our own that we may seek only the will of the Father

• For a recognition of the dignity of life from the moment of conception until natural death and that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God

• A quick end to the coronavirus pandemic• For all who are suffering from COVID-19, for their caregivers, and

for those who have died from the virus• In reparation for the sins of abortion, euthanasia, and racism• In reparation for the sins and failings of our spiritual leaders and for

our personal sins• For healing and justice for all those who have been discriminated

against because of their race• For the conversion of the world and the salvation of souls• For all those who are persecuted throughout the world for the Faith• For the conversion of those who carry out acts of desecration

against our churches, statues and religious symbols• In reparation for these acts of desecration, especially against Jesus

in the Blessed Sacrament• For our civic leaders and those who keep us safe to experience a

deeper conversion, to govern justly, and to seek the common good• That we may learn how to love and forgive from the example of

Jesus• For all marriages and families, neighborhoods, churches and cities

to be strengthened• For an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and

religious life

Thank you for joining me in this prayer on behalf of our world, country and our Church. I am confident that many of the faithful will respond in turning to the Blessed Mother who “shine[s] on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope” (Pope Francis’ Letter to the Faithful for the Month of May 2020). May you always know the protection of Mary as she leads you to her Son!
