Introduction to the Gospel

But they see something in this particular child that goes beyond the expected. They recognise this child as ‘the salvation’ which you have prepared for all th na-tions’, and Anna speaks of the child ‘to all who looked forward to the deliverace of Jerusalem’. The reaction of the parents is natural under such circumstances: ‘They stood there wonder-ing at the things being said about him.’ Mary is warned that being the mother of such a child will not be easy for her: ‘a sword will peirce her soul.’ For Mary, adher-ence to the will of God will come at a price.

Today’s Gospel text is another example of the ‘manifestation’ of who Jesus is. Luke sets his ac-tion in the heart of Juda-ism. In the temple itself. Mary and Joseph are pious Jews doing all that the Law requires of them. The two characters who are intro-duced - Simeon and Anna - are both also depicted by Luke as pious Jews. Simeon is ‘an upright and devout man’, while Anna ‘served God night and day with fasting and prayer’. they would both have seen many first-born sons presented at the temple in consecration to the Lord.

New Auxillary Bishop

Bishop Pat is delighted with the appointment and knows that the new Bishop-elect, who is already well known in the diocese, will be warmly welcomed by priests and people alike. Fr Gielen said, “I am very grateful to have served as a priest in the diocese of Hamilton over the last 20 years. I now accept this new call in Gods service aware of my need for God’s help and thankful for this opportunity to serve alongside the people of the diocese of Auckland.” Fr Gielen [48] is from Mt Maunganui - the eldest of six children. He trained for the priesthood at Holy Cross College in Mosgiel and was ordained in 1997. His episcopal ordination will take place in Auckland prior to Easter.

Pope Francis has named Fr Michael Gielen as Auxillary Bishop for Auckland.
