Pastor’s Notes
The prophecy of Zephaniah is a short three
chapters. He addresses the punishment of evil doers and
the salvation of a remnant of people who remain loyal to
God. They are a humble people who submit to the will of
God. They are poor and meek and rely solely on God's
mysterious plans, awaiting for God's justice. Zephaniah
predicts disasters to all the evil nations while these faithful
will live in mutual peace.
St. Paul points out that Jesus' followers are not
wise by human standards nor are they
influential. Jesus shares this life of poverty, yielding
mysteries not given to the proud or arrogant.
The Gospel recalls Matthew’s Beatitudes given at
the Sermon on the Mount. They are different from Luke’s
Sermon on the Plain. Luke gives four Beatitudes and then
follows them with four woes for the wicked. Matthew
spiritualizes the Beatitudes so that they become the
foundation of what it is to be a Christian. Jesus calls His
followers to live an authentic and deeply honest life, a life
of holiness. While God dictated the Ten Commandments
on Mount Sinai, Jesus, God made man, perfects them with
His teaching. Jesus' Beatitudes tell us about the happiness
of doing God's will in a God-like fashion. Blessedness is
most accurately translated as happy in a congratulatory
sense for living a life of sacrifice, for defying the status quo
to make the world better through a Christ-like
sacrifice. These are the people who suffer from not being
able to share in the political decisions that often profoundly
modify their way of life.
St. Augustine likens the Beatitudes to the seven
Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The poor in spirit are not
necessarily in economic straits. They are those who suffer
from want in the face of those who possess a
superabundance. They respect God like Lazarus who was
ignored by the rich man, and like Zachaeus who returned
four-fold of what he had stolen. They are the humble who
share their wealth with those who have little.
Those who mourn are not in the sense of loss
because the dead are with God. They are those who have
the knowledge to see the real value in this life. They are
saddened by evil or the power of evil in the world as it
affects their lives.
Those who are meek are not at all the soft. They
live piety by being considerate and unassuming. They
search for God's will in all they do while maintaining self-
control and serenity in bad times. They do not have
hardness of heart when it come to openness toward
God. They are generally treated poorly and not shown their
dignity of being made in the image and likeness of God. St.
John Paul called them marginalized, the ones most
vulnerable to a consumer society, those near death and the
unborn.
Those who are thirsting for holiness maintain their
courage in keeping to the faith. They act, not merely by
praying, but by becoming involved in doing God's work
according to their vocation. They demand in a Christ-like
fashion the restoration of justice for those who are
suffering from poverty and lack of respect.
Those who are merciful have a soothing capacity to
restore peace in a wise way, not just letting people go, but
with divine-like forgiveness - completely - especially for
those who suffer injustice, prejudice, poverty, and discrimi-
nation.
Those who are single-hearted attune their intellects
and wills to God's demands, especially with charity, chastity
and love of truth for those who suffer from one-track mind-
ed people, who act with violence and intolerance so preva-
lent in extremism and fundamentalism.
Those who are peace makers have the wisdom to
honestly seek peace and concord in their daily lives without
personal gain. They also have the capacity to suffer from
compromises against justice so prevalent with today’s world
leaders.
Those who are persecuted summarize the Gifts of
the Holy Spirit. They are not victims of circumstance, but
have a personal attachment to Jesus and His Way. Like the
Prophets, they suffer for the sake of righteousness. Right-
eousness is a key Christian concept for Matthew that
demonstrates a complete and voluntary conformity to the
will of God while enduring ridicule, derision, and even perse-
cution and death for the sake of the Gospel.
Fr. Euk
“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great
in heaven.” Here, in a nutshell, is the Christian belief about
the afterlife. We trust that heaven is open to believers who
accept the gift of salvation and follow the way of the Lord,
even (or especially) when that way is difficult!
The beatitudes in today’s Gospel give us a program
for following the path to heaven. These famous words offer
a kind of twofold image. There are, on the one hand, the
beatitudes about what we should do and be: poor in spirit,
meek, merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers. Such
qualities are reflections of the nature of God in whose im-
age we are meant to live. When we embrace and reflect this
image to the world, there is no doubt we are walking on the
path of God’s will.
Then, there are also the beatitudes about what we
are called to endure: mourning, hunger for righteousness,
persecutions and insults due to our belief in Jesus. These
are the trials that often beset the life of a faithful Christian--
admittedly more so in some ages and areas than in others.
But Jesus makes it clear that even these trials and strug-
gles are a sign that a Christian is on the right path, not that
God has abandoned him or her, but that the reward of
heaven lies around the corner.
One of the greatest consolations of our faith is that
even when life does not unfold according to our own perfect
designs, even when there is suffering to deal with, even
when we do not have great success in the eyes of the world,
we can maintain hope and peace as we await the “reward”
of the just. The eternal happiness of heaven will be worth
every ounce of temporary trial here on earth.

CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH!!!
If you enjoy singing or playing an instrument, we are looking to
start a YOUTH MUSIC MINISTRY for St. Veronica Church at the
5pm Sunday Mass!
This group would sing/play twice a month, on the same eve-
nings that the Youth Group meets.
We are looking for as many as 6 vocalists (male & female),
as well as keyboard, guitar, flute, clarinet (or any wood-
wind), trumpet, etc.
Practice times would depend on the group's availability, but
Sundays from 3:30 - 4:30PM (before the 5pm Mass) would be
an option.
I am very excited about this new music ministry and it will truly
make the 5PM Mass YOUR Mass!
Please contact me at [email protected], or see
me in church by the organ.
God Bless and let us together sing His praises!!!

St. Veronica’s Parish Lenten Mission Something important is coming to St. Veronica Church --
something you will find quite rich and rewarding. It is
good news for a change! Generally it is true that “no
news is good news.” We are accustomed to that. The
more disastrous, the more sensational, the better it sells.
But this is different! It is all good news because it is from
God. It emanates from our origins, and terminates in our
destiny. In other words, it is from your Creator, your
Redeemer, and your Sanctifier, the Holy Trinity itself, your
origin and your destiny – the very reason you exist. There
are some very surprising things to learn about the three
persons in the Trinity. Among present day spiritual
teachers and writers, they are coming to us in a new light
and with fresh inspiration. In the past, we were taught
that the Trinity was a mystery and therefore could not be
understood, so don't try! But it can be understood, and in
ways that may be surprisingly relevant to our lives. Come
listen and see for yourself. Come to the Parish Mission at
St. Veronica on March 5-8, 2017.
