Interference
Deflector
![Page 36: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Only team members may contribute ideas and create the Team
Challenge solution and Team Choice Elements.
Ideas, solutions and hands-on assistance from non-team members,
including you as the Team Manager, is called Interference!
What is Interference?
To learn more:
• Read Rules of the Road (pages 13 – 16)
• Read Roadmap (pages 30 – 31)
SKILLSCHALLENGE
& RULES
SOLUTION
![Page 37: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Teaching is NOT Interference
SKILLSCHALLENGE
& RULES
SOLUTION
• Remember, one of your roles is an
Educator!
• You can teach (or find somebody to
teach) your team the skills they want to
know to complete their Challenge
solution
![Page 38: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Safety is NOT Interference
SKILLSCHALLENGE
& RULES
SOLUTION
• Remember, one of your roles is the
team’s Chief Safety Officer!
• If what the team wants to do is
dangerous, you can tell them “NO”
• You can tell them to find another way
• You can’t do it for them or suggest other
methods
![Page 39: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Challenge Support is NOT Interference
SKILLSCHALLENGE
& RULES
SOLUTION
• Remember, one of your roles is the
team’s Challenge Expert!
• You can ensure that the team
understands the Challenge and the
Rules of the Road
• You cannot provide answers that will lead
the team to an idea or solution
![Page 40: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
So, What IS Interference?
• Adding your ideas (or any non-team member’s ideas) to the
solution
• Cutting wood, sewing a costume, painting the set, or putting your
skills and talents to work on any part of the Challenge (even if you
think the team members are too young to do it themselves)
• Fixing something that broke (even if you broke it)
• Asking questions that lead the team to a solution or idea
If the team’s solution looks like you imagined it
would, you probably interfered!
![Page 41: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
Not Interference
It’s Always OK for Team Manager and other Non-Team Members to:
• Transportation• Team Members
• Team Solution
• Set Limitations
• Be a Scribe – document team ideas in their words
41
![Page 42: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Interference
It’s Never OK for the Team Manager and other Non-Team Members to:
• Participate in creating or presenting any part of the Team Challenge solution, including:
• Fixing/Finishing elements of the team’s solution
• Giving critical feedback or stage directions
• Helping with hair/make-up/costumes (regardless of parents’ picture-taking ops)
42
![Page 43: Stack’Em UpRoles of the DI Team Manager Educator Guide students as they develop teamwork, tool, construction, Instant Challenge and project management skills Creativity Stimulator](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050415/5f8bae109f7c77237d598c8e/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
Instant Challenge Interference
• Interference rules do not apply when practicing Instant Challenges
• Skills learned through IC can be applied to Team Challenge solutions, but you cannot use IC to subvert the Interference rule
• The Rules of the Road specifies the role of the Team Manager in Instant Challenge at the tournament – page 29
• i.e. Be a statue

Points To Remember - Team Manager Survival
• A month before competition, you will feel that they will NEVER be finished. They will, but almost always at the last minute!
• If for some reason the team doesn't complete its solution by the date of the tournament, come anyway.
• We celebrate what they have completed and they also get to do an Instant Challenge

I discover another part of who I am.”

differently than other people, and it is certainly an advantage.”
