Connecting Churches to Change Our World

LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.

Why do we need a Sticks Conference? Like most churches in America and around the world; many of churches in the TEBA will average less than 125 on any given Sunday. Many times the churches that get books written about them, are mentioned in seminars or talked about are the bigger churches but the reality is that the average small church is critical to the work of God. Lyle Schaller, a noted church consultant wrote that in the 1990’s that churches would either become larger or smaller. That “Boomers, seeking excellence, encouraged their congregations to grow larger. Gen-Xers, seeking community, would begin migrating to smaller churches.” Leadership Journal interviewed Christian Schwarz, the creator of Natural Church Development (NCD) a tool to help churches evaluate their congregational health that has been utilized by more that 10,000 congregations focusing on 8 quality characteristics, asking him to comment on the importance of the smaller

congregation in reaching people for Christ and helping them become mature disciples.

Schwarz shared some important insights about the smaller congregation. Out of the 8 characteristics of healthy churches he stated, “Smaller churches do as well as larger churches in all key areas but one, which bodes well in the future for those in the shadow of mega-ministries.” Continued he stated, “In some ways, a smaller congregation can outperform large churches.” For example, “the percentage of people who practice their spiritual gifts to help their church grow. In churches with less than 100 in attendance, it's 31 percent. You can say that's not much. But if you compare that with churches of over 1,000 in attendance, which average only 17 percent” Overall, the area that mega churches excelled in was in creating more inspiring worship services.

Whether your church is small or large, it is important in the Kingdom of God. We need churches of all sizes and types if we are going to truly penetrate lostness. Together, as an Association of churches we can reach people regardless of background, heritage, life circumstance, or any other variable. That is why we are having the Texas Sticks Conference. Because we need every church regardless of its size to be effective. To be healthy. To be vital in the Kingdom of God.

The keynote speaker for the Conference will be Ray Gilder who is the Director of Bivocational Ministry Tennessee Baptist Convention and the National Coordinator Bivocational and Small Church Leadership Network. As reported in the February 2015 Tennessee Baptist Reflector, “Gilder was a fully funded pastor in Memphis in the early 1990s before joining the staff of the Tennessee Baptist Convention as church and community ministers director. When he was asked to take over bivocational ministries in 1995, Gilder made a decision that some people questioned. He specifically requested to give up his “full-time” status with the convention so he could serve as a bivocational pastor. Gilder moved to McMinnville and began serving as a bivocational pastor. As he began to work and minister with other bivocational pastors, Gilder had “credibility” because “I was one of them,” he affirmed.

Whether your church is in a rural setting or an outlying urban area you will be encouraged being part of the Texas Sticks Conference. This conference is specifically designed for the bivocational, single staff or churches in setting where they work with part-time staff. Regardless of your location, you may find something special is waiting for you at www.texassticks.org .

No Longer JUST a Lunch

Recently our Baptist Student Ministry and its Campus Missionary, David Griffin were the focus of the BSM Pause and Pray. We are reprinting a portion of that article so you can know about the ministry and how your church can be involved.

Most TxBSM's have a Noon Lunch that takes place on Wednesdays. These lunches provide an opportunity for those who are not engaged with the Gospel to enjoy a free meal and hear about Jesus Christ. They serve as an entryway to further conversations about Jesus Christ! At the Sam Houston State University BSM, missionary David Griffin, would say the lunches have been average. Sure, there are 200-250 students who show up every week to enjoy a free meal, but not much response has been seen in regards to the Gospel. That all changed right before Thanksgiving.

David recalls when they invited Bert Lyle, local businessman and prison evangelist, to come and speak. "When Bert asked students to raise their hand and commit their lives to Jesus, seven students responded!" Their lunch is no longer JUST a lunch where students can get free food, it is a place where God is calling people to himself!

Praise the Lord for God's work at the SHSU BSM Free Lunch! How to pray for David Griffin: That God would start a revival on our campus. That those who are spiritually sleeping, would wake-up to the reality and mandate of the gospel. Pray for Sam Houston BSM's Free Lunch to be a place where students hear the

Gospel and respond.

More About David: Where did you grow up? Spring, TX What is your favorite thing about TxBSM? It’s an organization dedicated to Great Commission ministry among our state’s 1.5 million college students. It's literally our mission and purpose to reach our society’s most influential people in a very strategic time in their lives.

How do you spend your free time? I spend my time (away from BSM) investing in my family and church. We are having fun and trying to foster a community of believers that will impact Huntsville for the long-term.

What is your favorite book, outside of the Bible? That’s a tough one… I am currently enjoying Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Trip. I think it is a good one for anybody, parent or not.

What is the most pressing prayer request for your campus? We need revival. We need our students to wake up to the mandate of the Gospel. We need students who will rally other students to labor in the field.
