STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING The Staff Training & Development Unit had a year of growth, new programs, new initiatives, increase in staff numbers and continued to service the four main types of services - consultancies, major programs and projects, the SDTU Training Program and one-to-one support. The year began with a strategic planning day that was followed by a number of team building sessions for all staff in the unit. A first for ANU was the joint venture with University College - The University of New South Wales and Charles Sturt University bidding for funds for a senior management program from the Commonwealth Staff Development Fund. A $100,000 grant from the fund was received in late 1994 for a program to be run in 1995. This program is for ACT/NSW Universities and participants will be both academic and general staff. This is a major project for the Staff Development and Training Officer, Robert Kennelly. Five ANU staff will be attending the program. The Quality initiative was another major project for 1994. A number of new areas undertook training in Quality Service and Total Quality Management. One whole division has undertaken Total Quality Management and they had all staff attend quality management training. A general Quality Service program was run for staff who deal with the public or who felt they needed to improve their skills in the quality of their service. Induction of new staff was a major focus in 1994. This program is now in five modules. One of the main changes with this program is that we aim to greet all new staff with a package that includes an invitation to module three. Module three is titled 'Survival' and includes information such as pay and conditions of service, CIS, Aspen, Fire Safety, OH&S and Wellness. It includes a tour of the campus. Module five is the only other module where the person is required to be away from their workplace. It takes the place of the Welcome Program. Two pilot programs on Work Performance and Review are underway. These are at different stages. One area has now set objectives and reviewed most of their staff. A consultant was engaged to work with them on setting and measuring objectives and goals. Members of staff in key areas were encouraged to attend external programs such as Coaching Staff. Again this year there was an increase in the number of staff attending courses. The general training program that was offered to all University staff and to some areas outside the ANU as a way of increasing our budget was successful. STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING

The Staff Training & Development Unit had a year of growth, new programs, new initiatives, increase in staff numbers and continued to service the four main types of services - consultancies, major programs and projects, the SDTU Training Program and one-to-one support.

Courses and workshops offered included: Managing Change, Writing in Plain English, Committee Servicing, Role of the Supervisor, Managing Difficult Situations, Staff Selection Briefings, Negotiation Skills, Conflict Resolution, Enhancing Self Esteem and Assertiveness Building, Giving &

Receiving Feedback, Quality Service, Time Management, Job Finding and Interviewee Skills, Assertiveness and a Welcome program for new staff.

A major breakthrough this year was a joint effort with SDTU and EEO organising the University's Tutor Scheme for Non English Speaking Background Staff (NESB). Staff members offered time to act as volunteer tutors and staff were able to get help that they needed.

One-to-one help with training needs; career counselling; financial assistance to attend external courses and conferences, awards for study in Australia and overseas was offered to individual staff members.

The Carrel video showings were extremely popular in 1994. Some videos shown were 'Giving and Receiving Bad News' and Assertiveness. There were approximately 240 staff view the videos.

SDTU funded two general staff to attend the 25th Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee course. Three senior academic and general staff attended a leadership trining course conducted by Heather Howard.

The unit continued to offer programs in conjunction with other groups which included EEO, CEDAM, ADFA, AIDS Awareness and Disability Awareness. Two Speechcraft courses were run by University Toastmasters Groups in conjunction with SDTU.

Resources in SDTU such as rooms, videos, books, were made available to staff or groups.

At the end of the year the Unit held a celebration of achievements in 1994. Staff who had been involved with SDTU in any way were invited to a light lunch. Members of unit staff and leaders of sessions from other areas were invited to speak about their experiences in training and development during the year.

Major issues for forthcoming years are Senior Management Development, Work Performance and Review, Enterprise Bargaining, Supervisory Skills development and

uality of Service.
