MESSAGE FROM THE FIRST SELECTMAN

First Selectman Matt Hoey wants all Guilford residents to be

assured that Town officials have been closely monitoring the

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak. The First Selectman has

convened a Task Force which is being led by Health Director

Dennis Johnson, along with members of the Town’s Emergency

Management Team and Town Department Heads.

The decision to close the Community Center was not an easy one, but it was made

with the safety of both residents and staff in mind. We understand that social

distancing, keeping away from each other, is the best way to control the spread

of the Coronavirus.

We also want to make sure that our kitchen staff, who provide Meals on Wheels,

stay healthy so that we can continue to provide this essential service. Guilford

Interfaith Volunteers is looking to expand their capacity to deliver meals to

seniors through the Meals on Wheels program, and anticipate an increase in

demand for those who traditionally participated in the daily Senior Lunch

Program. The Guilford Senior Citizens program will continue to provide

transportation to medical appointments and for food shopping as well.

Your understanding and patience are appreciated while we navigate through the

challenging days ahead. We will get through this together.

GUILFORD CARES

Are you in need of someone to grocery shop for you?

Are you in need of an important errand run?

Are you concerned about a Guilford family member getting out for supplies? During this time of “Stay Safe, Stay Home” in Connecticut, Guilford Parks and Recreation Seniors Program, in coordination with Guilford Interfaith Volunteers, Guilford Social Services, Guilford Cares and the Ethan Miller Song Foundation is implementing a program to deliver food to the homes of seniors and those who are immunocompromised. During this difficult time, staying home is in your best interest so let your caring community

help.

This program will primarily focus on providing assistance with grocery

shopping from Big Y, Bishops, Fresh Market and Marketplace. If you need

shopping done at another location in Guilford, we can also provide

assistance. We will work to expand the program as additional needs

develop.

For more information and specific guidelines, see page 3 of the newsletter

or call 203-453-8086 or email [email protected].

SHOPPING ASSISTANCE PROCESS Guilford Seniors is coordinating a program to provide volunteers to go grocery shopping or run errands for senior citizens or immunosuppressed individuals during the COVID-19 crisis. Guilford Seniors will collect the orders for supplies via phone or email, generate a shopping list, contact Guilford Cares to provide a volunteer, and track the program. All shopping will occur during office hours so that staff are

available to assist as needed.

For the safety of all involved in the program, volunteers will adhere to strict guidelines during shopping and delivery and will NOT enter homes. To arrange for assistance please follow the following process: Shopping List - Develop a specific shopping list and provide the list to Guilford Seniors by calling 203-453-8086 or emailing the list to [email protected] by 11:00 a.m., Monday thru Friday. Information Needed - You will be asked to provide a designated drop off location outside of your home – front steps, porch, garage, etc., and phone number where you can be reached during the shopping day. During Shopping - You need to be available for the volunteer to call you if they have any questions regarding items requested or possible substitute items. Payment - Once your shopping has been completed, you will be called by Guilford Seniors with the exact amount purchased and advised to have a check made out to the appropriate vender for the correct amount, left at the pre-arranged grocery drop location. If you need to pay by credit card, your exact name on card, zip code, billing address, card number, expiration date and vcode will be provided to Guilford Seniors staff for processing with Big Y, Bishops, Fresh Market or Marketplace. ** Delivery – The volunteer will drop off your groceries and your receipt at the pre-arranged location and pick-up your check. Nothing can or will be returned to the store for refunds. Review - Bring your groceries into your home and review your receipt to ensure delivery of all items. It is also recommended that all items be wiped down with disinfectant wipes prior to storage. Confirmation – Please contact Guilford Seniors at 203-453-8086 once the

delivery is complete.

**NOTE: If you are part of our population that cannot afford to buy your basic and essential food, we might be able to provide guidance. The Ethan Miller Song Foundation will be participating in fund raising efforts to support those in need of financial assistance.

MESSAGE FROM PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

MESSAGE FROM PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR

Dear Parks and Recreation participant:

We are all aware that we are in challenging times with so much that is unknown about the

coronavirus. Every day there are more restrictions about being with groups of people. The

Parks and Recreation Department staff are working with some of our instructors to create

some on-line videos of classes so people can still participate from home. We hope to roll

them out in the near future. We have been instructed by the Town Health Director to

discourage kids from using the playscapes. If any are carriers of the virus, it can last for

hours on the plastic and metal. The dog park and the tennis courts are open, but people

should stay at least 6’ apart and should not touch the gates with bare hands. Use a glove or

tissue and throw the glove or tissue away in a trash barrel. We encourage you to take

advantage of the parks and get outdoors for fresh air. You should avoid playgroups and

congregating with people, but as a family or individual, get outdoors. Here are some ideas

of things you can do: Go for a walk, Take a hike, Play disc golf, Use the skate park (if there is a crowd hike the

trails instead), Shoot some hoops, Create a scavenger hunt by listing things to find in your

yard or in the parks, Collect shells at Jacobs Beach, Grass Island, Chittenden Park beach,

Chaffinch Island Park, Barbara Pine Beach at Daniel Ave, or Shell Beach, Collect stones and

take them home to paint them, Go for a bike ride, Build a fort in your yard, Skim stones at

the beach, Do spring cleaning in you yard.

Check on an elderly neighbor and see if they need help with yard work or grocery shopping

Make a time capsule, Play Tennis or Pickleball.

This is just a sample list. There are many more things that you can do at home and outside.

Visit the parks and send us selfies of you or your family. At the end of March, we will

randomly pick out the selfies and award a prize. As this pandemic continues, we will offer

other challenges or contests that you can do on-line. Wash your hands, don’t get too close to

people and get outside for some fun and exercise. We will all get through this!

Stay well, Rick Maynard, Director, Parks and Recreation Department

DELAYED TAX ASSISTANCE WILL BE COMING

Many of you had signed up for assistance with tax preparation under the AARP Tax Assistance

Program. Due to the closing of the Community Center, all of the scheduled appointments have

been cancelled. AARP has been making phone calls to notify people of the cancellation.

Don’t worry, there will be options available when the current crisis ends. First of all, both the

Federal and State governments have extended the filing deadline to July 15TH so you have

plenty of time. In addition, once we can begin to provide public services at the Community Cen-

ter again, we will be offering at least one option for tax help. We will keep you posted.
