Playground Craze of the Month

February’s crazes are puzzle books, dolls, Diablo, dinosaurs and playing cards.

Please ensure that toys are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Staff News

We are delighted to inform you that we will be welcoming a familiar face to 4PH after half term. Mrs Amanda-Jane O’Brien, who has worked at our Broadwood site for 4 years, will be assuming

Miss Palmer’s teaching commitment and joining Mrs Heard in class until the end of the year. We feel sure that Mrs O’Brien will make the transition easily to her new class as she knows the

school and year 4 curriculum very well! She is greatly looking forward to getting to know the children after the half term holiday.

Mr Hayden has been away from work for a few weeks and has had a knee replacement opera-tion so Mr Caffrey, our caretaker at Broadwood, has increased his hours to cover Pound Pill.

We wish Mr Hayden a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him soon.

In January, we were delighted to receive the news that The Bullying

Intervention Group have awarded us the BIG Award for excellence in bullying

intervention. It was a whole team effort as always and we would like to say

a huge well done to all of our wonderful children and staff for working

together to achieve this fantastic award.

Dear Parents and Carers, Sadly, it has been brought to our attention that some Parents/Carers have been heard swearing on school grounds in front of children. While we appreciate that this may only be from a very small number of Parents/Carers and that the language used is in general conversation and not intended to offend, a number of children are being exposed to language which is highly inappropriate in the school environment. We kindly ask that Parents/Carers are careful about the language they use at school and in front of the children, as we know that some children can get upset when they hear these kinds of words, or can copy them. We thank you for your continued support and co-operation in this matter to ensure that the school grounds continue to be a positive and happy place for families at the beginning and end of the school day.

Absence Reminder

If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please telephone the school office to let

them know by 9am.

Punctuality

Regular and punctual attendance of pupils at school is both a legal

requirement and essential for pupils to maximise the educational

opportunities available to them. The Wiltshire Education Welfare

Service will continue to investigate cases of irregular attendance from school and following appropriate evidence, instigate legal action if

appropriate.

Children should arrive at school from 8.30am and be in their classrooms by 8.50am for registration. This enables

them to engage in early morning activities, meet their friends, choose

their lunch etc. before lessons start. At 9.00am.

We have a number of children who arrive late for school and are picked

up late at the end of the day regularly. Please bear in mind our admin team

are extremely busy at these times and ensure that you are punctual.

It is important to prevent your child from missing any school, even at the very beginning and end of the day.

Thank you.

Governor’s Year 6 Awards

Literacy — Monte B Monte has the ability to reflect his personal wider reading in

his writing which is lively and interesting with a variety of punctuation which well suits the purpose of the piece.

Numeracy—Julia M Julia has made some super progress in maths this year; she is a resilient learner who has consistently met the learning

objectives for this subject. She is not afraid to challenge her-self and is working towards a greater depth of understanding.

Well deserved!

P.E.— Ethan B Ethan has shown proficiency and commitment to rugby and

also, perhaps more importantly, shows fairness and kindness to others during competitions.

Congratulations!

Medication for Children

As a reminder for parents and carers, when children are in school and require medication, this must be administered by you. It is not acceptable for children to come to school with

medicine, throat lozenges, Bonjela etc for them to administer themselves.

If your child uses an inhaler, this must be kept by the school in our first aid bags and not in your child’s bag.

Thank you

Drivers dropping off and collecting at Pound Pill … We have had a message from parents, that drivers are parking, with their engines idling, on the road leading up to our barrier in order to drop off or collect their children. Although this is not part of school property, it does have double yellow lines along it and we would appreciate parents parking or waiting away from school please.

Please look out for these books in our class libraries, Corsham Library, The Corsham Book Shop or online.

2A love this book because of the use of rhyming and of course, the toilet humour involved! Who’s in the loo? By Jeanne Willis 'Who's in the loo? There's a very long queue. Is it an elephant having a poo?' If your house has many occupants, then this witty rhyme from the irreverent and observant pen of Jeanne Willis will resonate profoundly. Adrian Reynolds's exuberant illustrations highlight the fun!

2A found this book useful when learning about the Great Fire of London

Who was Samuel Pepys?

By Paul Harrison Samuel Pepys is famous for the diary he wrote 400 years ago. The diary tells us about lots of important events such as the Great Fire of London and the Great Plague.

Find out why people thought his diary was written in code, why Pepys was known as the 'father of the modern navy' and why he was arrested and sent to the Tower of London.

5TR 5TR are using this text to help with their history learning this term. Horrible Histories Awful Egyptians By Terry Deary All the Awful Egyptians' most horrible facts ready for readers to uncover, including why the Egyptian people worshipped a dung beetle, which pharaoh married her grandfather and what the 'Shepherd of the Royal Backside' had to do!

History with the nasty bits left in!

5TR enjoyed this book when learning about myths and legends.

Isis and Osiris to the ends of the earth- An Egyptian Myth. By Jeff Limke & David Witt.

Osiris is the greatest king and god of the Land of the Nile. He is a generous ruler, and the people love and worship him--along with his wife and queen, the goddess Isis. But Osiris's jealous brother Set has a terrible plan to get rid of Osiris forever and take his place on the Egyptian throne. Will Egypt suffer under an evil tyrant? Or can Isis use her magic and her love to save Osiris and conquer Set?

Skilled word reading involves both the speedy working out of the

pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Underpinning both

is the understanding that the letters on the page represent the sounds in spoken words. This is why it is so important to build a good

understanding of phonics alongside comprehension skills and reading for pleasure.

The children in FS and Key Stage 1 are gradually taught these sounds in their RWI (Read, Write Inc) phonic sessions and the children in Key Stage 2 continue

to reinforce them part of their RWI spelling lessons. Listed below are all the sounds the children should know by the end of Year 1.

Sports Reminders ….

PE kit — please provide your child with track suit bottoms and sweatshirt so that they don't get cold whilst taking part in activities outside. We are always keen to welcome parents and carers who would like to help out at sporting festivals and events. If you are interested, please contact the school office.

NUTS in School …

In the interests of the health and safety of our children and staff who have allergies to nuts, please may

we ask that no nuts are brought into school in packed lunchboxes or for tuck. The ramifications of someone who is allergic to nuts, coming into

contact with them can be life threatening and we obviously take

this very seriously.

Thank you for your consideration and vigilance.

SPORTS NEWS …

Children from both sites attended a netball tournament against six other local schools. The children gave 100% effort throughout and played with smiles on their faces.

The two teams played fantastic netball and scored some brilliant points.
