ORDINARY TIME RESUMES. The Easter season concludes with the close of today, Pentecost Sunday.

WHAT IS OLD IS NEW AND WHAT IS NEW IS OLD. Pope Francis added to the Church Liturgical Calendar the MEMORIAL OF MARY MOTHER OF THE CHURCH. This memorial will fall on the Monday after Pentecost each year. (It is not a Holy Day of Obligation.) The Church is not merely encouraging Marian piety; the Church is inviting all the Faithful to see more deeply the Marian character of the Church’s maternity.St. Leo the Great formulated this fifteen centuries ago on Christmas: “the birthday of the Head is the birthday of the Body.” And birth always requires a mother. To celebrate liturgically Mary as the Mother of the Church is to weave into an organic unity the cross, the Eucharist, and maternity. Only through them, St. Leo said, does one “quit the old paths of his original nature and pass into a new man.”Pope Paul VI declared at the conclusion of the third session of Vatican II that “the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church.” He knew, as did his successors, that the defense of Mary’s dignity is intimately tied to the preservation of the faith’s integrity.Mary is the Church’s mother, and in her, the Church is mother. For this reason, we can marvelously say, “Through Mary’s divine motherhood, the Church gives birth to Christ sacramentally in the Eucharist and spiritually in souls!”

MAY IS THE MONTH OF MARY – HANDMAID OF THE LORDThe Gospel of Saint Luke presents us with Mary, a girl from Nazareth, a small town in Galilee, in the outskirts of the Roman Empire and on the outskirts of Israel as well. A village. Yet the Lord’s gaze rested on her, on this little girl from that distant village, on the one he had chosen to be the Mother of His Son.In view of this motherhood, Mary was preserved from original sin, from that fracture in communion with God, with others and with creation, which deeply wounds every human being. But this fracture was healed in advance in the Mother of the One who came to free us from the slavery of sin. The Immaculata was written in God’s design; she is the fruit of God’s love that saves the world. And Our Lady never distanced herself from that love: throughout her life her whole being is a “yes” to that love, it is the “yes” to God. But that didn’t make life easy for her! When the angel calls her “full of grace” (Lk 1:28), she is “greatly troubled” for in her humility she feels she is nothing before God.The angel consoles her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus” (v. 30,31). This announcement troubles her even more because she was not yet married to Joseph; but the angel adds: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you…therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God” (v. 35). Mary listens, interiorly obeys, and responds: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” (v.38). – Pope Francis, December 8, 2013

SATURDAY MORNING ROSARIES All parishioners are invited to participate in Saturday morning Rosaries during the Marian Month of May. Our last Saturday Rosary will be the 26th at 9:00 a.m. The Rosary will be held outside at the Grotto of Mary, weather permitting, or inside the church if inclement weather. Please join us May 26th. See you there.

COLLECTION COUNTERS WANTED. We need more volunteers to help count the weekly monies contributed by the faithful to cover parish operating expenses. We count on Monday mornings starting about 9:00 a.m. and the counting takes about an hour. We are looking for enough new volunteers to form three or four groups; if we can do that, then you may only need to come perhaps one Monday out of every month. Counters must be detail-oriented individuals, able to focus on the task at-hand. If you wish to help, please e-mail both the Business Manager at [email protected] and the Pastor at [email protected]. Include your preferred contact information. Thank you for considering this valued work.

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION: A procession around the campus with the Blessed Sacrament will begin following the 11:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 3rd. We will return to the church and conclude with Benediction. I ask all parishioners to participate in this procession. The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, all ecclesiastical ministries (clerical and lay), and all works of the apostolate are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it.The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (i.e. Corpus Christi Sunday) is a celebration of Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist.A Corpus Christi procession is not a walking to the Lord; it is a walking with the Lord. Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking. Come and walk.

HERE COMES SUMMER! Attention Knights of Columbus, we are having a kick off to the summer picnic on June 2, 2018, from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. All Knights and their families are invited. We will have food, games, giveaways, a speed pitch machine and an inflatable for the kids. Please RSVP by May 25 to Orval at [email protected].

BLOODMOBILE: The next bloodmobile is coming to St. Peter Church on Monday, June 11th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. We will need both whole blood and double red donations of all blood types. The Red Cross needs over 600 units of blood per day to satisfy the needs of the hospitals they support. Please prayerfully consider giving this lifesaving gift. For an appointment, please call Ed Foster at 614/ 459-4373.

SOCKS & UNDERWEAR COLLECTION: The Community Services Committee will sponsor the annual “Socks & Underwear” collection for the St. Francis Center in McArthur, which is the primary provider of food and clothing assistance in Vinton County in southeast Ohio. TRAUMA INFORMED CARE TRAINING – DRUG ADDICTION AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH: As the Diocese continues to address the drug addiction crisis, a two-day Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Training will be offered at Bishop Watterson High School, Dominican Hall, June 11-12, 2018. TIC is an approach that acknowledges the role of trauma in addressing behavioral health problems. The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services will assist in the training. Cost is $25.00 per person. To register as a team or individual from your parish and/or school, visit https://columbuscatholic.org/tic-training.

THE PILGRIM STATUE OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA: The Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima was started at St. Peter’s Church in May, 2012 to promote praying the Rosary in families. This devotion has been well received among the parishioners and we have received several positive comments from parishioners who have taken the blessed statue to their home for a week. Among the comments received were: peace in the home, prayer intentions answered, wished we could have had the Blessed Mother for a longer time in our home. When we pray the Rosary, we do not pray to the Blessed Mother, but we pray with the Mother to the Father. Our Blessed Mother was chosen by God the Father, Himself. Angel Gabriel was sent down by our Heavenly Father to earth to announce the good news to Mary. The Rosary is Scriptural. (Luke 1: 28 and Luke 1: 41- 42). The last part of the Rosary, pray for us sinners, now ... is intercessory. Quote from Pope Pius IX: “Give me an army praying the rosary and I will conquer the world.”The 2018 sign-up schedule is available at the Welcome Center. To have the Pilgrim Statue in your home for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary is a great privilege. Please download the app. Scriptural Rosary on your phone (praying hands) which is a great resource in praying the Holy Rosary. Please take advantage of this great opportunity afforded by the parish and sign up early. The sign-up schedule is available at the parish welcome Center.

We invite you to consider joining Walking with Purpose, a women’s Catholic Bible Study, this fall at St. Peter. Weekly group sessions are starting on September 6th at 7:30 in the McEwan Center. Our second study, Touching the Divine, is a study of the Gospel of John and designed for women who have already participated in WWP and are ready for a more advanced level study as we learn how to know Christ in a deeper, more intimate way.

Walking with Purpose aims to bring women to a closer relationship with Christ. Personal study and small group discussions at WWP each week link our everyday challenges with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church.
