Introduction Welcome to the Commonwealth Bank Foundation’s StartSmart Primary Teacher Resource

Pack (TRP).

This pack has been designed to complement the StartSmart Primary workshops. In it, you

will find post-workshop activities that build upon and reinforce the key concepts covered by

our program. These activities come in a wide variety of formats including worksheets,

teacher-led discussions, games and research assignments.

The Commonwealth Bank Foundation is dedicated to the development of financial literacy

skills in young Australians. A fundamental tenant of the Foundation is to provide educational

resources without promoting Commonwealth Bank products. The StartSmart Primary

program aims to engage students in an interactive and fun learning environment while

equipping them with essential money management skills, primarily through engaging and

educational workshops.

This pack contains activities tailored to the learning needs of Stage 1 students.

Thank you for your participation in the StartSmart program. If you require any further

discuss doing a little something extra with their parents.

Page | 22

Chores Narrative Rebecca was a girl who loved rainbows. Everything that she owned was rainbow. Rebecca

had a rainbow hat, rainbow pictures and rainbow books. She even got the hairdresser to

give her rainbow hair!

But there was something that Rebecca didn’t have – a rainbow jumper. She knew that if she

wanted a rainbow jumper she would have to save up her money until she had enough to

buy one from a shop in Shopville.

There was just one problem – Rebecca wasn’t earning any money!

Rebecca knew that some of the other children in her class got paid money for doing chores.

Rebecca was doing chores too; her job was to keep her room clean and to set the table

before dinner. But Rebecca’s parents didn’t pay her to do those chores, she was expected

to do them for free.

Rebecca decided that this was not fair, so she decided to ask her parents for some money

every time she set the table or cleaned her room.

So the next day when Rebecca’s mum asked her to set the table, Rebecca said, “That will be

$5 please mum. All the other kids get paid money for doing chores and I want to get money

too.”

Rebecca’s mum turned to Rebecca and said, “I’ve cooked dinner for you and your Dad has

just finished washing your school clothes. Should you pay us $5 each when we do jobs for

you?”

Rebecca didn’t like the sound of that one bit. Her mum went on to explain, “Doing jobs for

people is part of being in a family. We all help each other out, and we don’t expect anything

in return, except a thank you. We do this because we love each other.”

Rebecca apologised, and asked, “But how can I earn money for my rainbow jumper then?”

Rebecca’s mum replied, “Well why don’t you and I sit down and see if there’s something

extra you can do, on top of the chores you’re doing now, that you can earn money for.”

What sort of chores do you think Rebecca and her mum came up with?

Page | 23

Chores Cha-Ching!

Oh no! Captain SuperCents ripped his superhero cape when fighting Gobbles the Wallet Monster. He needs some ideas about how he could earn money to buy a new one. He wants to know chores that you or Rebecca could do to earn money. In the table, describe and draw a picture of the chores that you or Rebecca could do to earn money. But remember – Everyone does chores to help their family out and they aren’t paid for them! These have to be something extra, that you don’t do already.
