Writing Narrative Friday Fun Day

We are learning to… - Independently write short texts, using appropriate text structure, language and features. - Use increasingly more complex and interesting language and sentences To be successful we need to - Try different ideas, language features, text structures - Use descriptive language Task Your task is to look at the picture to create your own narrative. You can do this on a google doc and submit it to your teacher when your narrative is complete or if you are using a book you can record it there. Remember to use paragraphs and engaging language features such as dialogue, adjectives, onomatopoeia, alliteration, metaphors, similes and adverbs. Remember to pick a tense and keep it consistent throughout your narrative. REMEMBER TO PLAN YOUR NARRATIVE BEFORE YOU BEGIN WRITING! Before beginning you can watch this short video to remind you of the structure of a narrative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98SsUs0mQyA Happy Writing!

Year 5 Monday Multiplication- Using Inverse Operations to check answers List other words that you know for multiplication. Just like when we used inverse operations for addition and subtraction last week, it’s the same concept when using inverse operations for multiplication and division. Today we are looking at using multiplication to check if division problems are solved correctly. Look at the following division problem 24 ÷ 6 = 4. To check if the problem is correct we need to multiply the answer by the smaller number in the problem, therefore it would be 6 x 4 = ?. If the problem was solved correctly the answer should be 24. If you need revision on how to use an algorithm to solve multiplication problems watch the following clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ5qLWP3Fqo Use inverse operations to check if the following problems have been solved correctly, remember to show your working out and give a tick if the problem was solved correctly or a cross if it is solved incorrectly:

a. 78 ÷ 6 = 13 b. 369 ÷ 3 = 123 c. 56 ÷ 4 = 14 d. 864 ÷ 6 = 144 e. 917 ÷ 7 = 131 f. 528 ÷ 4 = 132

g. 185 ÷ 7 = 25 h. 877 ÷ 5 = 174 i. 142 ÷ 5 = 27 j. 137 ÷ 4 = 35 k. 123 ÷ 6 = 19 l. 107 ÷ 8 = 12

Tuesday Division- Using Inverse Operations to check answers List other words that you know for division. Today we are using division to check if multiplication problems have been solved correctly. Look at the following multiplication problem 6 x 8 = 48. To check if the problem is correct we need to divide the answer by the smaller number in the problem. Therefore it would be 48 ÷ 8 = ?. If the problem was solved correctly the answer should be 6. If you need revision on how to solve a division problem using long division watch the following clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGqBQrUYua4

Use inverse operations to check if the following problems have been solved correctly, remember to show your working out and give a tick if the problem was solved correctly or a cross if it is solved incorrectly:

a. 202 x 5 = 1010 b. 305 x 6 = 1830 c. 838 x 3 = 2514 d. 412 x 8 =3296 e. 778 x 9 = 6224 f. 679 x 9 = 6111

g. 991 x 5 =4955 h. 355 x 5 =2485 i. 683 x 6= 3415 j. 838 x 3 = 2514 k. 755 x 8 =6040 l. 183 x 4 = 61

Wednesday Multiplication by 10, 100 and 1000 When you times a single digit by 10 what do you notice? For every number that does not have a decimal point, there is an imaginary decimal point at the end of the number. When we multiply a number by 10, 100 or 1000 we move that imaginary decimal point to the right and add a 0 to the end of the number. For example if the problem is 12 x 10, we move the imaginary decimal point to the right by one place value and add a 0 in that place as there is only one 0 in 10, therefore the answer would be 120. If the problem was 12 x 100, we would move the imaginary decimal point 2 place values to the right as there are two 0’s in 100, therefore the answer would be 1200. What would 12 x 1000 be? Solve the following problems:

45 x 10 = 67 x 100 = 19 x 1000 = 32 x 10 = 44 x 1000 = 58 x 100 = 92 x 10 = 88 x 1000 =

72 x 100 = 24 x 1000 = 61 x 10 = 98 x 100 = 4 x 1000 = 26 x 100 = 647 x 10 = 329 x 1000 =

Thursday Volume- Displacement Displacement is used in volume and capacity to measure the volume replaced by something else like an object. The measurement used for capacity is ml and L and the measurement it is converted to in order to measure the amount of displacement of volume is cm³ and m³. For displacement, 1cm³ displaces 1 ml, therefore 1cm³ = 1ml of displacement. For the following problems find out how many millilitres would be displaced by:

11cm³ = 26cm³ = 88cm³ = 52cm³ = 100cm³ = 130cm³ =

For the following problems find out what volume in cubic centimetres (cm³) would be required to displace:

90ml = 10ml = 120ml = 85ml = 47ml = 175ml =

Friday Capacity in real life List 3 objects that hold millilitres and litres. Today’s task is to help make dinner and write down when capacity is being used to measure liquids needed to make the meal. Write down the liquid used and how many millilitres or litres added.

MONDAY: Multiplication- Using Inverse Operations to check answers LISC: we are learning to use multiplication and division to check answers and solve problems. Daily Warm Up: https://mathsstarters.net/numoftheday/5digit-h or https://mathsstarters.net/numoftheday/6digit-h Fact check: addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Addition can be used to check a subtraction answer - and vice-a-versa. Multiplication and division are also inverse operations. For example: 60 ÷ 3 = 20 … 20 x 3 = 60 or 135 ÷ 5 = 27 ... 27 x 5 = 135. They can be used to check the opposite or inverse operation. To check if 24 ÷ 6 = 4 is correct we can multiply 6 x 4 which equals 24. Watch the video to revise how to use an algorithm to solve multiplication problems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ5qLWP3Fqo Monday Activity: Use inverse operations to check if the following problems have been solved correctly. Remember to show your working out and give a tick if the problem was solved correctly or a cross if it is solved incorrectly;

1. 78 ÷ 6 = 13 2. 369 ÷ 3 = 123 3. 56 ÷ 4 = 14 4. 864 ÷ 6 = 144 5. 917 ÷ 7 = 131 6. 528 ÷ 4 = 132

7. 185 ÷ 7 = 25 8. 877 ÷ 5 = 174 9. 142 ÷ 5 = 27 10. 137 ÷ 4 = 35 11. 123 ÷ 6 = 19 12. 107 ÷ 8 = 12

Wednesday - Friday: Volume and Capacity LSIC: We are learning to measure the volume and capacity of prisms and use the correct unit of measurement. Daily Warm Up: https://mathsstarters.net/numoftheday/5digit-h or https://mathsstarters.net/numoftheday/6digit-h Volume describes how much space an object takes up. If you blow up a balloon you increase the volume of the gas. Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold. We measure the capacity of anything that can hold something else. A bottle/carton of milk, a bottle of drink, a can of tomatoes, a car’s petrol tank, an AA battery etc.

Wednesday Activity: you are given a total of 100 x 1cm cubes (the ones we use at school). Draw 5 prisms that have different volumes using the cubes. Calculate the volume of each prism. For example: a prism made of 8 x 1cm cubes has a volume of 8cm³. Write the measurements of each prism (Height x Length x Depth). Make sure your drawings are neat and that you include the correct unit of measurement.

Thursday Activity: Draw a table - 8 rows, 5 columns. Add the measurements of the 1cm³ model to the left. You should have the following measurements at reference ‘a’ in the table: 10 x 2 x 2 = 40cm³. Add b through to f in the reference column. A. Add a layer (row) to the top of the

model and fill in the measurements in the table. B. Add another layer and complete the table. C. Add another layer and complete the table. D. Double the number of layers and complete the table. E. Take away two columns from the model (leaving 8 columns of blocks) and complete the last row of the table. Friday Activity: choose a couple of small boxes or containers from home. Measure the (Height x Length x Depth) of each. How would you calculate the volume of each box? Create a table that includes a description (cereal box), the three measurements and the volume.

Stage 3 Years 5 and 6 Learning at Home –Term 3 Week 5 9-13th August 2021

Activity: Instead of starting with the height, length and depth (width) use the following volumes to calculate the 3 measurements: 24cm³, 30cm³, 150cm³, 550cm³, 64cm³. There may be more than one correct answer. For example: if the volume is 8cm³ the shape could be 2 x 2 x 2 or 1 x 1 x 8. Remember you can use a calculator. Draw and label the dimensions of each prism. Extra Activity: This requires you to think carefully and clearly. Take your time. Imagine a box which is 1 metre long, 1 metre wide and 1 metre high. Answer the following questions - and explain your answers:

1. What is the volume of the box in cubic metres? 2. What is the volume of the box in cubic centimetres? 3. How did you work out this answer? 4. How many centicubes would be needed to fill the box?
