Stained Glass School Inc. Pre-Conference Classes
Saturday & Sunday June 8-9, 2013 SGS Workshops are professional-level classes de-signed to perfect current skill levels and introduce new techniques. These are excellent classes for studio artists and their employees. All students will receive Certificates of Completion. Classes are available for SGAA Certification.
All workshops are two-day classes, with lunch and most materials included. Instructors may request that you bring specific or personal items such as sketches or your favorite paint brush.
Dorothy L. Maddy Scholarships are available for classes. Visit www.stainedglasschool.org for applications.
Opaque Enamels with Sylvia Laks Painting Nature with Reusché Enamels
Certification Level: Craftsman/Master Craftsman
Fee: $425 per student ($395 if registered for Indy 2013)
Instructor: Sylvia Laks
Limit: 8 students
Materials: Paints and Glass will be included. Must pro-vide own brushes.
Description: During this two-day workshop, Sylvia will teach the use of high tempera-ture opaque enamel colors for painting flowers, birds and other concepts from nature. This is a technique she has been working with in Costa Rica as an added alternative to using lower-temperature transparent enamel colors. Students will learn the process for mixing and applying opaque enamels, the appropriate types of glass to use, and the kiln-firing process. Opaque enamels are primarily used in creating new custom works and can be used in conjunction with other stained glass techniques.
Laminating with Bohle America
Certification Level: Apprentice/Journeyman
Fee: $395 per student ($350 if registered for Indy 2013)
Instructor: To be announced.
Limit: 8 students
Materials: Included
Description: This introduc-tory workshop will present a new method of combining the functionality of modern architectural glazing sub-strates, such as insulated glass and safety glass, with the tradition of stained glass artistry. The lamination tech-nique offers a practical solution for stained glass designs that can be efficiently combined with acid etching, paint-ing, and abrasive etching processes to provide an eco-nomical architectural-design solution.
The workshop is divided into two parts — Theoretical/Technical: Understanding the theory behind the lamina-tion process and possible field applications, and Practi-cal: A “hands-on” lamination application combining stained glass and a safety glass substrate using Verifix© 2K Silicone.
No Fear Airbrush Painting with Janet Zambai Class Sponsored by Badger Brush
Certification Level: Journeyman/Craftsman
Fee: $395 per student ($350 if registered for Indy 2013)
Instructor: Janet Zambai
Limit: 15 Students
Materials: Provided. Students will need to bring safety glasses, respirator, old clothes or apron.
Description: Create beautiful, delicate designs that ap-pear to be floating in the glass. You don’t need to be
afraid of the airbrush; it is just a tool and can be used for numerable applications. This class will give you the basics to get started.
In this fun “Hands On” class, Janet will teach you about the different paints to use for different applica-tions. You will get a feel for the airbrush and learn how to use it. You will paint on glass that will be fired in a kiln, and you will also do some cold painting. Paint will be applied to sandblasted and non-sandblasted glass.
SGAA/SGS Silent Auction The proceeds from the silent auction will be split between the Stained Glass Association of America and the Stained Glass School, Inc. Both have programs that need serious support. Send books, cartoons, artwork, jewelry, gift certificates or any other items to SGAA Headquarters, 9313 E. 63rd St., Raytown MO 64133.

SGS Symposium
The SGS Board will share the School’s current status, future plans, and—most im-portantly—how you can be a part of and benefit from the School’s future.
Dennis Harmon Emmanuel Stained Glass Dennis is one of our favorite de-signers. His easy-going nature shines through in the serenity of his work. Trained by such nota-bles as Dick Millard, Albinas Elskus, and Ludwig Schaffrath,
his concepts are well grounded in the basic principles of good design and qual-ity craftsmanship. He will discuss designing for future generations, with a focus on modern iconogra-phy. Dennis is a Past President of the SGAA and Chair of the Mar-keting Committee.
Robert Jones Maitland & Helen Armstrong Bob will guide us through Maitland’s unique involvement with the develop-ment of opalescent glass and the Amer- ican School.
Glass making, relationships, working ar-r a n g e m e n t s , plating, paint-ing, and win-dow structure all go into the iconic make-up of this great studio’s history. This is a must attend lecture before your next Armstrong restoration. Bob is a Trustee on the Stained Glass School Board and Chair of the SGAA History Committee.
Eileen Grogan Restoration, the Bigger Picture Ms. Grogan is the Historic Preservation Specialist for
Conrad Schmitt Studios. She will discuss funding, resources, and sus-tainability. She will explain the core values of preservation and how they translate perfectly to the restoration of stained glass. She will also show how studios can take advantage of
the current trends and buzzwords: green, sustainable, preservation, etc., to promote their craft.
Restoration Forum Restoration Committee & Special Guests
The newly released “Standards and Guide-
lines for the Preservation of Stained (and
Leaded) Glass Windows” will be discussed. The discussion will then be opened to other restoration topics.
The Restoration and Preservation Commit-tee will be joined by Rolf Achilles, curator of the Smith Museum of Stained Glass in Chicago. Rolf also teaches as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Art History, The-ory, and Criticism, and the Historic Preser-vation Program at the Art Institute of Chi-cago. He was also the co-author for Preser-vation Brief #33.
Kevin Grabowski acts as National Project Director at Con-rad Schmitt Studios (SGAA Fully Ac-credited Member), with nearly two decades of experience in stained glass fabrication, restoration, and conserva-tion. His background as a craftsman gives him hands-on familiarity with all phases of the craft as well as intimate knowledge of stained glass settings and the issues and techniques involved in the addition of protective glazing.
Christie A. Wood of Art Glass Ensembles established her studio more than 17 years ago and has recently completed the restoration of 63 historic stained glass panels for the First United Methodist Church in Mer-cedes, TX, after a catastrophic fire. She is an Active Accredited Member of the SGAA
Stained Glass Association of America 104th Annual Summer Conference
Known for her dramatic art-istry, Sylvia is a true Renais-sance woman and artist. She will share her most recent pro-jects and techniques that she has developed to create her very unique artistic voice.
Sylvia Laks, born in Heredia, Costa Rica, studied drawing and painting at Casa del Artista, fo-cusing on portraiture.
In 1985, she became the artistic designer for Luvico Glass Studio, a German-owned studio where she worked with stained glass for the first time.
In 1996, she met and married Enrique. To-gether, they formed Sylvia Laks Stained Glass Art Studio and Gallery. She has re-stored old European
stained glass win-dows and created new windows for 30 Catholic churches in Costa Rica as well as for many hotels, in-stitutions, and resi-dences.
She won First Place at SGAA’s 2010 Annual Sum-mer Conference Exhibition (pictured below), be-
coming the first non-American to ever receive this peer-voted award.
In 2011 her studio became the first in-ternational Fully Ac-credited Member
with the Stained Glass Association of America. Sylvia will also be teaching a Pre-Conference Class: Opaque Enamels.

This is a must-see SGAA Ad-
venture! Kokomo will provide tours, lectures, lunch, music, a display of original Haynes auto-mobiles, and time to shop.
“The Opalescent Glass Works at Kokomo, Indiana, is the old-
est manufactory of its kind in America, having been in con-tinuous operation now for more than 100 years. The fac-tory was originally built in 1888. There
were only five other significant manufacturers in the United States: Louis Heidt (1879) and John Dannel-hoffer (1882), both in Brooklyn; the Boston Antique Glass Co. (1883) in South Boston; Mississippi (1884) in St. Louis, and Streator Art Glass Co. (1887) in Streator, IL.” Do not miss Cindy Locke’s lecture on the fascinating history of KOG.
But churches will not be left off of the tour. On our way back to the hotel, we will stop at St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church. The Riordan windows are all made from Kokomo glass—you will be amazed!
We will also visit St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, which includes windows from the local Fox Studio.
Amazing windows created by Minnietta Millard throughout the facility.
Plus a very special award-winning chapel there with windows by Emil Frei.
