Terminology

Baluster – The vertical posts or spindlesbetween the handrail and the baserail.May be plain, turned, square or flat.

Baserail – The rail that runs along thebase of the balusters.

Cap – The decorative piece on top of thenewel turning.

Handrail – The smooth rail fixed to thetop of the balusters.

Newel turning – The large post at thebeginning, end or turn of a stair rail.

Cut string – A staircase with the profile or side of the steps visible.

Closed string – A staircase with theprofile or side of the steps concealed.

Over-the-post – Often described as aover-the-post handrail system –continuous fix and in the style of grandperiod staircases, specially designedfittings allow the handrail to flow over thenewels and spindles, creating smoothsweeping lines.

Post-to-post – Typical of most staircases,this system has a newel post positionedat the top and bottom of your stairs, with a handrail fitted between them. There aretwo fixing methods for post-to-post:

Traditional fix system – A flexible systembased on modular components, withtraditional mortise and tenon joints for a professional end result.

Bracket fix system – A time-saving systemusing a series of predrilled newel postsand a unique adjustable bracket – a goodchoice for the competent DIY-er orprofessional fitters alike.

Building Regulations & British Standards

Rules & Regulations.Approved Document K of the Building Regulations 1992: Stairs, Ramps and Guards gives provisions for stairways in the designand building of stairways which form part of the structure and guidance on the aspects of geometry and guarding of stairs.

BS585 Part 1 1989: Woodstairs covers specifications for stairs with closed risers for domestic use, including straight and winderflights and quarter or half landings. Appendix A of this standard also details the recommendations for the site fixing of stairs.

BS5395 Part 1 1977: Stairs, Ladders and Walkways covers the design of straight stairs.

BS6180 1982: Code of practice for protective barriers in and about buildings.

DEFINITIONS

Private stairs intended to be used for onlyone dwelling with a maximum rise of220mm and a minimum going of 220mm.A maximum pitch of 42° is stipulated fordomestic stairs. Institutional andassembly stairs serving a place where asubstantial number of people will gather,with a maximum rise of 150mm and a minimum going of 280mm. Buildingswith a maximum rise of 190mm and aminimum going of 250mm are coveredby all other stairs.

Note - Institutional and assembly stairsplus other, both reference ApprovedDocument M, Access and facilities fordisabled people for the maximumpermissible rise of stairs providing accessfor disabled people.

The normal relationship between thedimensions of the rise and going can beexpressed as detailed in ApprovedDocument K, which states that twice therise plus the going (2R+G) should bebetween 550mm and 700mm.

Pitch - The angle between the pitch line(notional line connecting nosings) andthe horizontal. The maximum pitch fordomestic stairs is 42°, semi-public stairs,e.g. factories, offices and common stairsserving more than one dwelling, 38° andpublic stairs, e.g. places of publicassembly, 33°.

Height of handrails - ApprovedDocument K states that flights shouldhave a handrail on at least one side ifthey are less than one metre wide and on both sides if they are wider than onemetre. There is no need for handrailsbeside the bottom two steps of astairway. Minimum domestic handrailheights of 900mm for both stairs andlandings, public handrail heights shouldbe a minimum of 900mm on stairs and1100mm on landings.

It is also a Building Regulationsrequirement that no openings in anybalustrading should allow the passage of a 100mm sphere.

SUITABILITY FOR USE

Richard Burbidge stair balustradesystems in all timber types have beenfully tested by BM TRADA for conformityto domestic requirements as stated in the Building Regulations Part K, ‘The guarding should be able to resist ahorizontal force of 0.36kN for each metreof length if it guards a private stairs’. In addition, spindles have beensubjected to a separate test as stated in BS6180 table 2 column 4(a).

Richard Burbidge also manufacture anumber of systems for shared access andcommercial use tested to the higherstrength requirements of 0.74kNincluding Fusion Commercial, Heritageand Classic ranges.

Richard Burbidge stair balustradesystems were tested using traditionaldraw-bored mortise and tenon joints(post-to-post handrail system – mortiseand tenon fix), patented universalbrackets (post-to-post handrail system –bracket fix) and tie-rail bolts/metal fixingplates (over-the-post handrail system –continuous fix). We do not recommendthe use of any other fixing method.

Richard Burbidge stair balustrade ismanufactured from high quality rawmaterials complying to BS1186 and arekiln dried ready for immediate internaluse. All components are turned ormoulded to profile and sanded to a finefinish.

Timber overview

A quick guide to the woods we use.Timber is a natural product and components may vary in colour between pieces.

White Oak - Quercus alba and petraea. USA, Canadaand Europe. A straight-grained medium to coarsetexture hardwood. Ranges in colour from pale yellowbrown to pale brown. Stains and polishes well andcan also be limed. Average weight 720 to 760kg/m³.

Ash - Fraximus Americana. Distributed throughoutUSA and Canada. A generally straight-grainedhardwood, pale brown in colour sometimes tingedred. Stains and polishes well. Average weight670kg/m³.

Sapele - Entandrophragma cylindricum Sprague:Distributed in West and East Africa. Medium to darkreddish brown heartwood, similar to mahogany incolour. Sapele is characterised by a marked andregular stripe with an interlocked/wavy grain and isfairly close textured. Stains, varnishes and polishesextremely well. Average weight 640kg/m³.

European Beech - Fagus sylvatica L.: No colourdistinction between sapwood and heartwood, thetimber being pale pink following m edium steaming.An immensely strong timber that outperforms oakfor bending strength, stiffness and shear by some20%. It is also stronger in resistance to impact loads.It works well, producing a good, smooth surface andstains and polishes to an excellent finish. Averageweight 720kg/m³.

Hemlock - Tsuga heterophylla Sarge: Westernhemlock, a non-resinous North American softwood.Pale brown, straight grained with a fairly eventexture. Can be painted, stained, varnished orpolished. Average weight 500kg/m³.

Pine - Pinus sylvestris L.: Commonly referred to asEuropean redwood or Scots pine. Creamy white toyellow sapwood with a distinctive yellow/reddishbrown resinous heartwood. Ideal for painting,staining and varnishing. Average weight 510kg/m³.

ACCLIMATISATION

IMPORTANT - You should note that acclimatisingtimber products by leaving in the room or a roomwith a similar humidity for at least 48 hours isessential if problems associated with shrinkage andexpansion are to be avoided. Storing stairbalustrading, for example, in a cold and dampgarage for months and then using for immediateinternal installation is not good trade practice. This is due to timber being a natural material that bothabsorbs and loses moisture. The rule of thumb toremember is ‘timber plus water/moisture equalsexpansion’ and ‘timber plus heat equals shrinkage’.It is therefore extremely important to seal/finish yourtimber products once installed by painting, stainingor varnishing (see page 103 for some ideas).

Staircase terminology

Baluster/spindle - The vertical member,plain or decorative, that acts as the infillbetween the handrail and baserail (ortread if cut string).

Balustrade - The collective name for thecomplete assembly of handrails, baserails,newels, spindles and caps.

Post-to-post handrail system – bracket fix -Patented Richard Burbidge Limitedsystem which uses a bracket to fix thehandrail to the specially designed newels.

Bullnose step - Usually at the bottom ofthe stairs with one or both ends of thestep having a quarter circle design.

Closed string - A string with the facehoused/trenched to accommodate treadsand risers so their profile cannot be seen.

Over-the-post handrail system –continuous fix - Using straight lengths ofhandrail connected to handrail fittings andramps, the handrail flows over the tops of newel turnings creating a continuousrun of handrail.

Curtail step - A decorative shaped step atthe bottom of the stairs usually accommo-dating the volute and volute newel turningof the continuous handrail system.

Cut or open string - A string with theupper edge cut away to the shape of thetreads and risers so that their profile canbe seen from the side.

Going - The going of a flight of stairs is thehorizontal distance between the face ofthe first and last risers. The individualgoing of a step is measured from face ofriser to face of riser and for domestic useshould be a minimum of 220mm.

Newel - Accommodates the strings,handrails and treads/risers of stairs.

Nosing - The edge of the tread projectingbeyond the face of the riser and the faceof a cut string.

Pitch - The angle between the pitch lineand the horizontal.

Pitch line - The notional line connectingthe nosings of all treads in a flight of stairs.

Rake - The pitch of the stairs.

Rise - The rise of a flight is the verticaldistance between the floors or landingsconnected by the flight. The individualrise is the vertical measurement from topof tread to top of tread.

Riser - The board that forms the face ofthe step. The maximum individual rise fordomestic flights is 220mm.

Staircase - The entire structure relating to a stair, comprising steps, treads, risers,strings, balustrading, landings etc.

Stairway/stairwell - The space/voidprovided for the stairs.

Step - The tread and riser combined.

String margin - The distance between the top of the string and the pitch linemeasured at 90° to the pitch line.

Tread - The top or horizontal surface of a step.

Wall string - The string of a staircase fixed flush with a wall.

Winders - Are radiating steps narrower at one end that are used to change thedirection of a stairs through 90° or 180°.

How we’ve made fitting easier.Richard Burbidge stair balustrade components have been designed for use in the majorityof staircase configurations. No staircase need present a problem if the components areused and installed in the correct manner. To assist, the following post-to-post handrailsystem – bracket fix, post-to-post handrail system – mortise and tenon fix and over-the-posthandrail system – continous fix configurations illustrate the most popular bottom of flight,intermediate and top landing options in the construction of staircases. The individualcomponents are identified on each illustration together with a simple plan view of the stairs.

All diagrams are based on domestic staircases with a maximum pitch of 42°, individual rise of 200mmand individual going of 223mm. Other situations

CUT STRING

There are two ways of installing spindles to a cut stringstaircase. The traditional method used by professionaltradesmen is to fix the spindles to the top of the treadby constructing a stub tenon woodworking joint. An alternative and more modern way of fixing is to cutindividual lengths of baserail and screw to each tread.The spindles and fillets are then fixed as normal by glueing and pinning. This method is excellent forcarpet finishes.

Both methods of installation use 1100mm lengthspindles on the front and back edges of the tread.

When a handrail hits the underside of a ceilingline or second flight string we recommend thatyou run a length of handrail up from thebottom newel until it meets the ceiling/stringand a further length of handrail along theunderside of the ceiling/string. Where the twohandrails meet they should be mitred togetherand fixed using a combination of glue, screws,dowels and/or metal plate.

As spindles reach the underside of theceiling/string they will become shorter inlength, to maintain an aesthetically pleasingbalance with the pitch of the stairs andhandrail, keep the bottom square of allspindles the same length and reduce thespindle from the top downwards. Dependingon the style of spindle you are using it may be necessary to cut into the turned part of the spindle and to space you should cut the timber fillets/spacers with a coping saw to suit the spindles radius. Fix the spindles and fillets as normal with glue and panelpins/lost head nails.

Installation information

The Richard Burbidge Post-to-post handrail system –mortise and tenon fix (also known as post-to-post) is designed for traditional fixing using mortise and tenon joints to fix the handrails to newels.

This system is designed primarily for professionalinstallation by tradesmen who are fully conversant withthis type of traditional woodworking joint.

We recommend that tenons are constructed so that theyare a minimum one-third the width of the handrail andhalf the the length of the newel post. Tenons should bedraw bored using a minimum 9mm diameter dowel.

We do not recommend the use of post-to-post handrailsystem – bracket fix newel base heights when settingout the post-to-post handrail system – mortise andtenon fix. Newel base heights for this system should becalculated by setting out the newels and establishingwhere the handrail will meet the newel post.

Post-to-post handrail system – mortise and tenon fix stairparts have been designed to achieve minimumdomestic handrail heights of 900mm for both stairs and landings.

To calculate how many spindles you will need count the number of treads between newels on the stairs.Allow 2 spindles per tread and 1 spindle per tread thathas a newel post. For example a 12 tread staircase with newels at the bottom and top of the stairs willgenerally require 22 spindles.

The Richard Burbidge over-the-post handrail system – continuous fix (also known as over-the-post)is designed for professional installation by skilledtradesmen.

This system uses straight lengths of handrailconnected to a series of shaped handrail fittings and ramps which allow the handrail to flow over the tops of newels.

All handrail fittings and ramps are supplied over longand will need to be cut down to suit the individualstaircase pitch.

Handrail fittings and ramps are supplied with tie-railbolts to allow jointing of the fittings to rails. Fullinstructions on how to use the tie-rail bolts aresupplied with the fittings.

To calculate how many spindles you will need countthe number of treads between newels on the stairs.Allow 2 spindles per tread and 1 spindle per treadthat has a newel post. For example a 12 treadstaircase with newels at the bottom and top of thestairs will generally require 22 spindles.

The post-to-post handrailsystem – bracket fix has been specifically designedto save time using pre-drilled newels and a uniqueadjustable bracket that secures handrails to newels.

Post-to-post handrail system – bracket fix stairpartshave been designed to achieve minimum domestichandrail heights of 900mm for both stairs andlandings.

Brackets are sold individually apart from the N160Dhalf newel which comes complete with a universalhalf bracket.

Finishing advice

Once Richard Burbidge products have been installed they must be finished to seal the pores,protect the surface and give an attractive appearance. Successful finishing will depend on correctpreparation of the surface, filling of nail holes and sanding to remove marks which have occurredduring installation, for example.

We recommend that all finishes areapplied to test pieces so that the finishobtained is the one that you wish toachieve. Please read manufacturer’sinstructions carefully. Richard Burbidgedisplay models are spray lacquered. A similar finish can be achieved usingbrush applied methods follow the simpleguidelines alongside for a perfect finish.

Brush applied varnish

1. Sand the surface with a fine gradesandpaper. Traces of dust and greasecan be removed using a clothdampened with white spirit.

2. First coat - mix together one partwhite spirit, three parts polyurethaneclear varnish and if a colour is requiredone part spirit based wood stain/dye.

3. Allow at least eight hours to dry.Lightly rub down using a fine gradewire wool and apply a coat of clearvarnish only.

4. Allow at least eight hours to dry andapply two further coats of clearvarnish.

Spray applied varnish

1. Rub down with 240 grit sandpaperand apply one coat of sanding/sealer.

2. Allow to dry and denib/sand with a fine grade wire wool.

3. Apply two coats of pre-cat lacquer (if a coloured finish is required usetinted pre-cat lacquer).

Note - Remember, a clear varnish willchange the colour of wood which shouldbe considered before deciding on a coloured finish. Practice on off-cutsbefore applying to product.

Finishing advice

Varnish

Available in clear matt, satin and glossfinishes and also tinted/coloured, varnishgives a tough, durable and hardwearingfinish which requires minimalmaintenance and is heat and waterresistant. Coloured varnishes have theadvantage of being suitable forapplication on previously varnishedsurfaces. When applying colouredvarnishes you should note that as theydo not penetrate the wood like a truewood stain/dye it is a good idea to finishwith a couple of coats of clear varnishwhich will prevent colour loss due towear and tear.

As well as polyurethane varnishes thereare a number of acrylic/water-basedvarnishes which are solvent free, have a low odour and are extremely quickdrying. They also have the advantage of easy brush maintenance and requireonly a quick rinse with water after use.

Oils

Oils can be used to seal timber. They do,however, tend to be used on hardwoodsonly as softwoods discolour and becomedirty very quickly. There are various typesavailable which are easy to apply, usuallyby rag or brush. Teak oil is quick dryingwhilst danish oil has the advantage ofbeing able to accept a varnish for addedprotection. Linseed oil is slow drying and tends to be soft.

Wood stains/dyes

These will penetrate the wood and areused to enhance the colour and to someextent unify and neutralise the naturalcolour variations that occur in timbers.They tend to dry quickly and are usuallyapplied with a cloth along the grain.Before it is dry, excess stain/dye is wipedoff with a lint-free cloth. Woodstains/dyes do not seal the timber andrequire a varnish or polish application to finish.

Protective wood stains

All in one finish enhances the colour of wood and is normally brush applied.Unlike wood stains/dyes it also seals thetimber and is quick drying with furthercoats being applied after just two hours.

French polish

This gives a very good gloss finish. It isapplied by building up in layers and ismade from a mixture of shellac andalcohol, with a fair degree of skillrequired to achieve a good finish. French polish does not provide any realprotection, with the surface not resistantto scratches, heat, water or alcohol and isnormally applied to surfaces that receivelittle wear and tear. A modern alternativetwo part treatment is ‘plastic coating’,which does provide resistance to heat,liquids and scratches.

Liming

This is best applied to coarse grainedwoods such as oak. A traditional mixturefor liming oak can be achieved by mixingunslaked lime with water. Once appliedand semi-dry any surplus is wiped off.When dry this is rubbed down withglasspaper and a coat of french polish isadded, with a final coat of white polish to finish. Alternatively, an easier methodis to mix white matt emulsion with waterto the same consistency as milk and brushinto the grain, wiping off before setting.To finish and seal two coats of satinvarnish are applied, giving an eggshellshine. Liming wax is also available,which is quick and easy to apply.

Paint

Use a ‘knotting’ solution on live knotsand resinous areas. This prevents resinbleeding/seeping through onto thefinished surface. New bare timber shouldhave a coat of primer, followed by one or two coats of undercoat. Finish with a topcoat of gloss. There are numerouspainting finishes and techniques, forexample, crackle, glaze, marble ormottled effects.

The following details are examples of some of the more popular ways of finishing. Of course, before applying your chosen finish (stain, paint or varnish) your timberproduct should be properly prepared. Pin/nail holes should be filled with a proprietaryfiller and the product sanded to remove blemishes that can occur during installation.
