Stakeholder Update Issue 2 - 2016 Changing Lives through drought relief Leonardo da Vinci once said “Water is the driver of Nature”. Over the past few months, news headlines have been filled with issues of water shortages and drought in South Africa. Most of us can quote former President, Thabo Mbeki when he said ‘South Africa is not a water rich country’. Many South Africans have experienced this to be true over the past while. Some civil society organi- sations have initiated drives to reduce the impact on the drought on both people and agriculture. Civil society organisations have collected and dis- tributed millions of litres of drinking water around the country to date. Some individuals have also shared rallying calls on social media to fight the impact of the drought, even collecting lawn cuttings to supplement ani- mal feed for farmers. When the NLC launched the new brand in 2015, one of the pledges we made was to be impactful in changing lives not only through calling for applica- tions for funding, but in responding proactively to the issues that arise in South Africa, especially in times of crisis. In accordance with that, we have pledged R50 mil- lion toward the installation of boreholes that will pump water out of the earth in the hardest hit provinces of the Free State, Limpopo, North West and Eastern Cape. While we have seen some rainfall in Gauteng since the start of the drought, it has not come at an op- portune time for farmers who’s sowing and harvest cycles are influenced by season in addition to suffi- cient rain, and we are already feeling the pocket pinch through rising food prices. Stakeholder Update Issue 2 - 2016

Changing Lives through drought relief

Leonardo da Vinci once said “Water is the driver of Nature”. Over the past few months, news headlines have been filled with issues of water shortages and drought in South Africa. Most of us can quote former President, Thabo Mbeki when he said ‘South Africa is not a water rich country’. Many South Africans have experienced this to be true over the past while. Some civil society organi-sations have initiated drives to reduce the impact on the drought on both people and agriculture. Civil society organisations have collected and dis-tributed millions of litres of drinking water around the country to date. Some individuals have also shared rallying calls on social media to fight the impact of the drought, even collecting lawn cuttings to supplement ani-mal feed for farmers. When the NLC launched the new brand in 2015, one of the pledges we made was to be impactful in changing lives not only through calling for applica-tions for funding, but in responding proactively to the issues that arise in South Africa, especially in times of crisis. In accordance with that, we have pledged R50 mil-lion toward the installation of boreholes that will pump water out of the earth in the hardest hit provinces of the Free State, Limpopo, North West and Eastern Cape. While we have seen some rainfall in Gauteng since the start of the drought, it has not come at an op-portune time for farmers who’s sowing and harvest cycles are influenced by season in addition to suffi-cient rain, and we are already feeling the pocket

pinch through rising food prices.

NLC staff Changing Lives

Changing lives is not only our day job. It is part of

who we are.

In addition to the R 50 million for boreholes, NLC staff took it upon themselves to make a difference by donation almost 1000 litres of drinking water to the Bakgatla Ba Mocha community at Ga-Maubane, Mpumalanga. Kgosi Pontsho Maubane accepted the donation on 21 April 2016, and distributed to the community, Maubane local clinic and Sodi Pre-school. The NLC officials highlighted the importance of water as life, and the commitment of the NLC to make a tangible change in the lives of the vulnera-ble.

FRAUD ALERT! The NLC does not employ agents to conduct its work. We have been made

aware of scams targeting beneficiaries!

Building a solid foundation: Early Childhood Development In the last newsletter, we spoke about the Early Childhood Development (ECD) infrastructure launches that had taken place in the Eastern Cape and the North West. These launches are for projects funded from the targeted ECD call from which almost 5000 applica-tions were received. On 8 February 2016, the ECD launch road show was at Boitumelo Creche in the small town of Parys in the Free State, where 26 learning centres received cheques for new build-ings and edutainers amounting to over R50 million rand. NLC funding has made it possible to build state-of-the-art buildings that can accommodate a maxi-

mum of 120 children or ready to occupy containers that can accommodate a maximum 30 children, with an office section, and a kitchen block. This ECD infrastructure programme will contribute towards access to quality early childhood develop-ment across the country. The events were held in partnership with provin-cial departments of Social Development and were attended by different stakeholders including office of the Premier, local municipalities NLC Benefi-ciaries and members of the community. The next ECD project launch will take place in Mpumalanga in May 2016. As at 4 April 2016 a total of R460 154 000.00 had been allocated to ECD projects nationwide.

Using the NLC Logo on your project publicity

As previously communicated, the rebranding of the National Lotteries Board as the National

Lotteries Commission also included the change of the logos. For beneficiaries publicity, the

NLDTF logo will no longer be used. A new NLC logo with the words ‘LOTTO FUNDED’ will now

be used to show the impact of NLC funding on all beneficiary publicity and branding.

Lotto Funded: Dream Team Foundation

Beneficiaries don’t only appear on the live Lot-to draws! Dream Team Foundation was featured on the popular women based talk show Motswako, on SABC 2 during March 2016. The feature focused on the impact of the national lottery on funding for good causes! Under the guidance of Julia Mashele, Dream Team is focused on poultry farming, pig hus-bandry, growing of fruit and vegetables, and has a bakery on a separate site. It also serves as a half-way house for former prisoners to assist them with skills develop-ment, job seeking and social integration. They were also the Gauteng Province winners at the 2015 NLC Beneficiary Awards! Motswako addresses pertinent issues such as female empowerment and women’s leadership. The show also encourages the dynamic, aspira-tional & inspirational upliftment of women in general.

Did you know that the NLC does not employ

agents to conduct its work?

The NLC has been made aware of scams targeting beneficiaries!

Don’t fall victim to fraud!

The National Lotteries Commission has been made aware of the fraudulent activities of indi-viduals posing as NLC officials who target benefi-

ciaries that have been approved for funding.

So far, 38 cases have been reported to date where beneficiaries are made to believe that they have to pay administrative fees to access

their funding.

Modus Operandi:

Individuals using the names or aliases Bernard Maluleke, Richard Baloyi, Albert Hlongwane, Lawrence Munyai, N.T Motabeni, L.A Nyalungu and David Mudau contact beneficiaries that have applied for funding with news that their

applications have been successful.

They then request that amounts ranging from R 5000 to R 30000 be deposited into their ac-counts as admin fees to release the grant pay-

ments.

Once they have received this money, they send a false bank confirmation to the beneficiary with

the amount of the funding to be received.

Those who have been targeted soon discover that the cheques deposited to them had

bounced.

The NLC is working in close cooperation with law enforcement agencies to trace the people be-

hind these scams and bring them to book.

Tips to avoid being a victim:

The NLC does not employ agents to facili-

tate applications and grants;

The NLC does not require payment for the processing of applications, or to pay out

grants;

Contact the NLC anti-fraud line 0800 012 013 if you notice any suspicious activities

related to the NLC;

called agents; and
