    Issue No. 348 / September 2017

  • Dear Collectors Welcome to this edition of the Stamp Bulletin and a range of collectables for everyone. We have presented all of the products released this September in a separate edition with October releases to be sent to you next month.

Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post

All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps should be made in writing to:

Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 [email protected]

This edition begins with a stamp issue that takes a closer look at Heard Island, part of the Australian external territory of Heard Island and McDonald Island (HIMI) located in the middle of the vast Southern Ocean. This large island offers a breeding sanctuary for a number of seal and penguin species. We also identify Australia’s rich cultural legacy associated with the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) with a stamp issue in September, AAT Cultural Heritage. The three stamps in the issue present artefacts from three main historical periods that link to themes such as exploration and science.

This year we mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of Australia’s first satellite, the WRESAT (Weapons Research Establishment Satellite), from the Woomera Rocket Range in South Australia. The launch was made possible through assistance by an American-led research program and the offer of a launch vehicle.

The single stamp by designer Nigel Buchanan will be released 12 September and is printed in a sheetlet of 10.

A further stamp issue for Norfolk Island provides a glimpse into the past and the convict heritage associated with the territory. The Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property encompasses 11 sites around Australia and its territories, including the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area located on Norfolk Island. The New Gaol, completed in 1847, replaced the previously built and flood-prone gaol located closer to the foreshore.

This edition of the Bulletin also presents new individual stamp packs for everyone to collect and enjoy!

  • Subantarctic Heard Island is located in the middle of the vast Southern Ocean, about 4,000 kilometres south-west of mainland Australia. It is the largest island in the external Australian Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI). HIMI is a dynamic natural environment and is largely devoid of species introduced by humans. In recognition of its unique natural values HIMI was

inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997 and the National Heritage List in 2007.

The island is heavily glaciated although in recent decades these glaciers have been slowly retreating due to climate change. Big Ben on Heard Island is an active volcano that at 2,750 metres is the highest mountain in Australia outside the AAT.

Before Australia joined the “Space Club” with WRESAT, only the USSR, America and France had launched satellites independently.

Fifty years ago, on 29 November 1967, Australia launched its first satellite, WRESAT (Weapons Research Establishment Satellite), from the Woomera Rocket Range in South Australia. The WRESAT project was made possible by the generous donation of a spare launch vehicle from an American-led military research program, Project SPARTA, being conducted at Woomera in 1966. Instead of shipping the spare rocket back to America, it was offered to Australia as a satellite launcher.

1946002 First day cover (gummed) $1.30

At the time, scientists at the Weapons Research Establishment Salisbury (now the Defence Science and Technology Group Edinburgh) and the University of Adelaide were already collaborating on a program of upper-atmosphere research using sounding rockets that were too small to put a satellite into orbit. The offer by the Americans enabled them to extend their research into orbit by developing a satellite that would carry the same kinds of scientific instruments.

This stamp issue focuses on Australian heritage associated with Antarctica. Our Antarctic history is relatively short, yet it has given rise to a rich cultural legacy. This heritage ranges over objects, documents, photographs, recordings, monuments, built heritage and much more. The stamps present artefacts from three historical periods – the exploration, interwar and postwar eras – and link to themes of exploration and science, politics and geography, and transport.

One stamp shows an aneroid barometer, made by London-based maker Cary, which was given to physicist Alistair Keith Jack by Ernest Shackleton, leader of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–17). Another shows the proclamation over King George V Land signed by distinguished Antarctic scientist and explorer Douglas Mawson on behalf of Britain on 5 January 1931; this forms the basis of Britain’s transferral of territory to Australia. The $2 stamp shows a restored Weasel M29 over-snow vehicle used on the Australian Wilkes–Vostok traverse in 1962–63.

Cultural heritage is a touchstone for the stories that shape our lives, identities and sense of belonging.

  • The Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property encompasses 11 sites around Australia and its territories, including the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area (KAVHA), located on Norfolk Island. KAVHA is a large collection of highly significant penal settlement buildings, ruins and archaeological remains from the island’s First Penal Settlement (1788–1814) and Second Penal Settlement (1825–1855).

This stamp issue presents two elements of the second settlement: the New Gaol, completed in 1847, and the Prisoners Barracks, completed in 1835. While only the arched entrances and perimeter walls remain standing, the sites paint an evocative picture of the harsh conditions experienced by convicts sent to Norfolk Island.

The New Gaol replaced the initial flood-prone gaol, which was located close to the foreshore.
