BATTLE AT BLUEWATER 2 ON FOX SPORTS TVMexican Independence Day Weekend: Mercito Gesta at BlueWater!

There are two great Filipino fighters in the world, but only one is undefeated. His name is Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (22-0-1, 12 KOs), and on Sat, Sept. 17, he will headline “BATTLE AT BLUEWATER 2,” a card presented by Showdown Promotions, in association with Top Rank Inc., and televised nationally by Fox Sports.

BlueWater Resort & Casino, the entertainment capital of western Arizona, will celebrate its second foray into boxing with an explosive card that also features Arizona’s top undefeated boxing prospect, Jose Benavidez (12-0, 11 KOs) – fresh off a homecoming knockout win in Phoenix. Benavidez Jr. will be featured as the co-main event on this nationally televised card.

Jose Benavidez Jr. was the youngest ever Golden Gloves Champion, and in 2010 received a special dispensation from the Nevada State Athletic Commission to become a professional boxer at the age of 17.

This boxing prodigy has returned to Hollywood, California’s Wild Card Boxing Gym to work with world-renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach in preparation for the big fight.

Jose Benavidez Sr., Benavidez Jr’s trainer and manager said “We started training at Wild Card this week, and

look forward to staying focused and getting ready for September 17th, we are excited to be back in Hollywood and working with Freddie.”

Benavidez will again be donating a portion of his purse for this fight to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital as well.

As if that were not enough - undefeated Tijuana sensation Hanzel “El Tornadito de Tijuana” Martinez (12-0, 10 KOs) will return to BlueWater and make a special-attraction fight certain to please his countrymen, as they give “El Grito” and celebrate Mexican Independence Day Weekend. “Great fight card in our return to the BlueWater!” says Showdown Promotions’ Gerry Truax about BATTLE AT BLUEWATER 2. “I can’t tell you how excited we are to have prospects like Mercito Gesta and Jose Benavidez Jr. on one card. These are two of boxing’s biggest future stars - And on national television!”

Another undefeated Phoenix prospect, Juanito Gonzalez (2-0, 1 KO), will round-out what promises to be an exceptional lineup in the BlueWater Amphitheater. BlueWater Resort & Casino is located on the Colarado River in Parker, AZ

FILM! SEC

TION

Silver Screen Scoop!By Joseph J. Airdo

During last week’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, Disney and Pixar announced development on two projects. The first, slated for release Nov. 23, 2013, is built around an idea in which the extinction-level asteroid missed Earth 65 million years ago so dinosaurs never went extinct. The second, set to debut May 30, 2014, is being referred to as an “inventive new film that explores a world that everyone knows, but no one has seen: inside the human mind.”

Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com

Soundbite Spotlight: Director / Co-Writer Larysa Kondracki (The Whistleblower)

By Stan Robinson

Inspired by true events, ‘The Whistleblower’ is a drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a Nebraska police officer who served as a UN peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia, uncovers the dangerous reality of corruption and exposed the U.N.’s complicity in covering up a sex scandal. After more than eight years of research and multiple meetings to get her film produced, Larysa Kondracki got the ‘green light’ and after only five short weeks of pre-production was on her way to Romania, the location that would double for Bosnia…

“It’s a story that found me, I’m Ukrainian-Canadian and it’s a story that people had been talking about. I’ve been pushing this ‘big rock’ up the hill for about eight years from conception to getting it done, so definitely I found it! We (co-writer Eilis Kirwan) raised some money from the community, family and friends

in Canada, Ukrainian-Canadians, about $30,000 and spent two years traveling all over eastern Europe doing all the research and writing various drafts of the script, using everyone from high level NGO’s (non governmental organizations), to officials, and underground crusaders. As the project went from studio to studio we were doing different drafts because there are so many different ways to tell the story. We had given it to Rachel (Weisz) years ago but she was pregnant at the time. She asked a few years later if it was available, and once she was attached, Canada was on board with some of the financing.” – Larysa Kondracki

Director Glodell Reflects on Shooting “Bellflower”

By Randy Montgomery

Production on “Bellflower,” a pre-apocalyptic romantic drama began with only $5,000 and without permits. Writer, director and star Evan Glodell explains, “We shot wherever we could, or wanted… for 90 days in the summer of 2008. We had no budget and no resources. Over the next two and a half years we were shooting pick-up shots. It wasn’t technically 100% finished until three weeks ago.” “Bellflower” premiered at Sundance earlier this year, where it was a hit with audiences. “When we got to Sundance, we had gotten the movie to the point where we were happy with it, but we weren’t done,” explains Glodell. While Glodell was “too scared to watch the movie with the audience (at Sundance),” the crowd’s reaction was positive.

Reaction has also been overwhelming to the film’s mechanical star, The Medusa which was built for the movie and has a custom apocalypse exhaust system, built in flamethrowers and a sawed-off shotgun in the trunk. This fire-breathing menace on wheels was uninsured and unregistered. “Every time we drove it, we thought we would get pulled over. The car is so absurd, when people see it; they think you couldn’t possibly be doing anything wrong, since you are attracting so much attention.” Medusa can still be seen roaming the streets of Southern California, “It’s the only car I’ve had for a year now,” Glodell says.

minutes)

Joseph: “On the one hand, ‘Bellflower’ is a thematic masterpiece and a technical landmark for independent filmmaking. On the other hand, writer/director Evan Glodell’s screenplay is all over the place, taking a while to capture one’s interest before eventually frustrating them with layers of confusing chronology and mercurial madness. An intensely violent sequence near the end shows promise but the story whimpers out before all is said and done.” Grade: D

Randy: “A festival favorite with ‘cult classic’ written all over it. Stylish editing, camera work and really cool working props make this a step above your ordinary indie. Filming without permits or a budget, this feature-length debut is impressive, albeit a bit self-indulgent. The filmmakers have been quoted as saying ‘We made the movie we wanted to make.’ With a national release, hopefully audiences will appreciate the effort. Overall, an enjoyable wild ride.” Grade: B

Stan: “With the familiar theme of fantasy becoming distorted reality, ‘Bellflower’ fledgelingly incorporates the ‘chapter sequencing’ made famous by Quentin Tarantino, jump-cut editing, and a bit sloppy at times with basic production values like dust specks on the lens and inconsistent exposure settings from shot to shot lacking, the independent effort of filmmaker Evan Glodell and his team is duly noted and will improve with experience.” Grade: C-‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’

A young girl (Bailee Madison) sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own. (R – 99 minutes)

Joseph: “Writer/producer Guillermo del Toro’s remake of the 1973 made-for-television movie ‘Don’t be Afraid of the Dark’ may have well been marketed under R.L. Stine’s ‘Goosebumps’ heading. That is not to say the new R-rated horror flick should be viewed by children. After

all, it is bloody, violent and downright dark (for lack of a better word). However, while it is definitely fun, ‘Don’t be Afraid of the Dark’ is too silly to be scary yet too funereal to be funny.” Grade: C

Randy: “I expected so much more from Guillermo del Toro. Although he does not receive the ‘directorial’ credit for this film, he was involved in the production. Unfortunately, the end product is uninspired, unoriginal and – despite a few good tense moments and jump scenes (and some good cinematography) – quite dull. We’ve seen this ‘haunted house’ story time and time again and this creation gave us nothing new.” Grade: C-

Stan: “With the 1973 TV movie, the source material for this big screen version, a very distant memory, I was entertained by the humor, reacted to the ‘bump scares’, and the cast, notably Bailee Madison at 10 years old with 2007’s ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ among my favorites, ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ did remind me of how intriguing the horror/scare genre can be.” Grade: C+

‘Life, Above All’

Just after the death of her newly born sister, a 12-year-old girl learns of a rumor that spreads like wildfire through her small, dust-ridden village near Johannesburg. In Sotho with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 100 minutes)

Joseph: “‘Life Above All’ is a sad and powerful drama. However, there is such a thing as being too sad and too powerful. Granted, when tackling South Africa’s AIDS epidemic, one cannot be too serious. However, director Oliver Schmitz is not quite subtle enough with the sentimentality, manipulating moviegoers as opposed to allowing them to feel for themselves. On the other hand, those feelings are still sobering, regardless of the mode of their evocation.” Grade: C

Stan: “As compelling as South Africa’s AIDS crises is, and the

theme of living life above all else a central theme, the poignancy of key moments are diminished as the mindset of ‘preaching to the choir’ seems forever present. A redeeming factor, the cast and notably the very young actress Khomotso Manyaka in the lead, transcend the inequities as ‘Life, Above All’ reminds us of our humanity and will to survive.” Grade: C

‘The Whistleblower’

A drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a Nebraska cop who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the U.N. for covering up a sex scandal. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 112 minutes)

Joseph: “Writer/director Larysa Kondracki appears to be too pre-occupied with the bigger picture to bring ‘The Whistleblower’ home on a personal level. That is to say that star Rachel Weisz gives one of the best performances of her career to, ultimately, no avail because ‘The Whistleblower’s’ sights are set so high that it is impossible for it to truly resonate with an audience. The result is a self-important docudrama that falls flat and leaves those thirsting for a thriller parched.” Grade: D

Stan: “With the theme of ‘whistle blowing’ prominent in films, notably ‘The Informant’ (2009) and last year’s ‘Fair Game’ (2010), writer/director Larysa Kondracki presents the basic formula in fine form. Rachel Weisz as the small town police officer with personal issues of her own, thrust into the international arena as a UN peacekeeper and deciding to right a terrible wrong, takes hold and doesn’t let go. A scene of the massive lobby of the UN complex that literally dwarf’s Weisz’s character when she enters, sets the tone psychologically for the power of the system she’s up against…” Grade: B

Now Playing!‘Columbiana’

By Stan Robinson

A young woman (Zoe Saldana; ‘Avatar’, ‘Star Trek’, and ‘The Losers’) grows up to be an assassin after witnessing her parents’ murder as a child in Bogota, Columbia. Employed as a hit man by her uncle, she also engages in vigilante activity seeking those responsible for her parent’s deaths. Written & produced by Luc Besson (PG-13 - 107 minutes).

Love Exposure

By Randy Montgomery

Director Shion Sono’s epic “Love Exposure” clocks in at a whopping 237 minutes. This may be the perfect time to enjoy that LARGE tub of popcorn with refill they are always trying to sell you at the movies. The story centers on a bizarre love triangle involving panty shots and a cult leader. Playing Exclusively at The Royale in Mesa, AZ.

Maybe it’s penance for all those “World’s Fattest Man/Woman/Teen” specials that seemed to be all over its lineup a few years ago. Whatever the reason, TLC seems to have abandoned the freak-show approach to plus-sized people in favor of portraying them as ... well, people.

The latest example is the three-part series “Big Sexy,” airing on consecutive Tuesdays starting Aug. 30.

The show follows five women working in, or aspiring to work in, the fashion industry in New York. They’re all big, and they’re all beautiful. And they’re all fighting for acceptance by the fashion world, the world in general and on occasion, their own selves.

The triumphant moments come at the end of the episode, when the women put on a plus-size fashion show, complete with swimsuits.

If you find estrogen appealing – and we’re guessing at least half of you do (maybe more) – you’ll want to tune into the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, airing Sunday, Aug. 28, on, you guessed it, MTV. We say that because it’s the ladies who seem to have brought their “A” game to the world of music videos this year. Consider that Katy Perry has been nominated for a whopping 10 awards

– including the recently announced new category

“best video with a message” – while British songstress

Adele has seven for her monster album “21.”

Just to put this in perspective, there are 15

VMA categories airing, and Perry has a shot

at 10 of those shiny moon men. Kanye West is also a nominee this year,

as are Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars.

STEVE-OAugust 25th – 28th Steve-O has become a household name and it all started when he snatched a video camera from his father when he was 15. From there he started producing homemade skateboarding videos featuring dangerous stunts mixed with comical behavior. Steve-O’s videos made it into the hands of Jackass creator Jeff Tremaine who was working with Johnny Knoxville to create a stunt based reality show. The rest is history. When the “Jackass TV” series ended in 2002, the team moved on to “Jackass: The Movie”. Shortly thereafter, Steve-O and fellow “Jackass” alum, Chris Pontius, were given a spin-off show entitled “Wildboyz”,

which aired on MTV and MTV2 and lasted four seasons. Paramount released “Jackass: Number 2” in theatres and Steve-O continued to thrill audiences with his outrageous stunts. In 2009 he competed on ABC’s hit show, “Dancing with the Stars”, and lasted six weeks, despite an injury and having virtually no dancing ability whatsoever. Next up, Steve-O was seen in Paramount’s release of “JACKASS: 3D”. He has been clean and sober since March of 2008 and lives a healthy, vegan lifestyle in the Los Angeles area...but he still has no problem stapling his balls to his leg. Showtimes: Thurs. 8:00PM / Fri. 7:30 & 9:45PM / Sat.7:00 & 9:45PM / Sun. 7:00PM. Tickets $22, $25

AL JACKSONSeptember 1st – 4th Al Jackson has had an incredible year. Recently he appeared in his own Comedy Central Presents half hour special, earned a showcase spot on Showtime’s “Louie Anderson Presents”, and was featured as a coach on this year’s Emmy winning season of MTV’s MADE. He is also the current host of FOX’s nationally syndicated travel show, Awesome Adventures. Al did this while appearing in two E! specials: 50 Most Insane Celebrity Oops and 50 Super Epic TV Moments. He was selected to participate in the 2011 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Chicago where he was voted one of the best of the fest and can be heard on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show and the Opie and Anthony Show. Add to that a resume which already included two appearances on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, a spot on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham and Friday Night Stand-Up, commercials for Burger King and Comedy Central, MTV’s MVP’s, F’N MTV, and Comics Unleashed and the future for this young comic looks limitless. Showtimes: Thurs. 8:00PM / Sun. 7:00PM. Tickets $12

Dinner at St. Francis by Chef Rachel Albert

It’s not a church; it’s a cozy family-owned restaurant in the heart of central Phoenix at 111 E. Camelback Rd. (on Camelback just East of Central Ave). Centered around a custom-built, 19th century-style wood-burning oven fed a steady diet of mesquite and almond trees, St. Francis feels both quaint and modern. From the décor to the food,

everything about it conveys warmth and comfort.

Wood-fired flavors permeate nearly every dish on the menu from the roasted vegetables and peppers that go into the soups, sauces, and sides to the salmon and San Francisco style sourdough brick-oven baguettes and flatbreads.

You’ll find seasonal, mostly locally grown and produced foods, including im-peccably fresh vegetables and intensely flavorful meat, poultry, fish, and cheese, house-made salad dressings, richly flavored with fresh herbs and spices.

Great picks: Roasted Crispy Fingerling Potatoes, garden-fresh Heirloom Tomato & Cucumber Salad with peppers, red onion slices, soft goat cheese, toasted pine nuts, and Zinfandel Wine Vinaigrette; smoky oven-roasted Pork Chop with a ragout of beans, charred onions, crushed tomatoes, and whole grain mustard; Roasted Salmon Superfood entrée with red quinoa, avocado, soy beans, radish, and sweet chili vinaigrette.

St. Francis is open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Thursday from 11 am to 10 pm, Friday 11 am to 11 pm, Saturdays 10 am to 11 pm with happy hour daily until 6 pm. They also serve brunch on Sundays from 11 am to 2 pm with live music with three local jazz artists. Kids dine free.

Poor Tyler Florence; he seems to be spending an inordinate amount of time chasing trucks and looking for handouts. Florence, best known for his television shows “Food 911,” “How to Boil Water” and “Tyler’s Ultimate,” has taken to the road for another season of “The Great Food Truck Race,” airing Sundays on Food Network.

There’s something uber-American about food trucks. It’s like having the drive-in come to you. And our current curiosity for a wide variety of cuisines has opened the door for entrepreneurs to try creating specialized mobile menus. After all, nothing says “America” like Korean BBQ out of the back of a truck.

“I really think there is an American dream for everybody,” says Florence from his home in Mill Valley, Calif. “The old model of raising $4.5 million is really intimidating to most people. Whereas the food truck model is kind of interesting because if you can raise $5,000, you can get four wheels.”

September 10, 2011 THE YOUNG DUBLINERS @The Compound Grill

In 2011, the Dubs toured extensively around the US and Europe in sup-port of Saints And Sinners, the title borrowed from an Irish proverb, the band’s journeys have been filled with “poets and patriots, saints and sinners”. Packed with free-wheeling party anthems to politically charged songs to poignant, harmony-laden jams, Saints and Sinners finds the Dubliners seamlessly blending their trademark rock and Celtic influences and offering up a vibrant collection of

songs bursting with wit and wisdom. This year the shows are already pil-ing up and the band will be doing its usual balancing act of recording a new album while still maintaining a hectic touring schedule. “Its just the way our lives are at this point” says Roberts. “We are a working band and that means staying out there as much as we can. We constantly keep the pressure on ourselves to write good songs and make good albums.”Tickets are $20 ADV/$22DOS + sales tax. Tickets can be purchased online at www.thecompoundgrill.com, the Compound Grill Box Office or at 480.585.5483

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

MODERATE BEER CONSUMPTION FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLEFrom time to time we enter the discussion about whether or not beer has any real health benefits. When we do, we always do our best to be able to cite legitimate publications and research that tout the advantages of moderate drinking. In case you missed the key word…it is MODERATE. Then we discovered that a tiny microbrewery and distillery in Pretoria, South Africa had put together a pretty good list. So let’s take a look at this list and maybe you can use something off of it the next time you want to slip out for a couple of beers.

Medical studies have over the years consistently demonstrated that moderate consumption of beer can be part of a healthy lifestyle.

1. Drinking beer is good for your liver! Drinkers of beer can get rid of poisonous heavy metals like lead and copper up to five times

more effectively than tee-totalers. Alcohol causes the small blood vessels in the liver to expand which speeds up metabolism. (Beer Net Publication, April 2001 Biological Institute, University of Charkov, Prof. AnatolijBohkov)

2. It lowers your risk of heart attacks. Those

drinking beer on a daily basis, averaging 4-9 liters (editor’s note: A liter of beer is about 33.8 ounces, so 4-9 liters is 1.5 to 3 beers per day)- of beer per week, have the lowest rate of heart attacks. Their risk is approximately 50% lower when compared to non-drinkers. (Bobak et al 2000; Hoffmeister et al 1999; Kitamura et al 1998).

3. It prevents cholesterol from oxidizing. Hop compounds xanthohumol and quercetin, both strong antioxidants are very effective in their ability to prevent LDL (the bad form of cholesterol) from oxidation. When LDL is oxidized it will be laid down on the artery wall causing them to narrow, thus increasing the chances of blockage and heart attacks (Miranda et al 2000). Antioxidants are thought to be able to quench and inactivate the free radicals, which may cause the types of cellular damage that can lead to both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer.

4. It boosts your antioxidant levels. Recent studies have turned its attention to the anti-oxidative role of plant polyphenols in general, their beneficial influence on various aspects of health and in particular, their role in dealing with dangerous free radicals within the body. Analysis can show how much of these good compounds are in beer- but can it be absorbed (called bioavailability) by humans and hence have a positive effect on health? Yes! The malt-derived antioxidant ferulic acid is 100% absorbed by humans (compared to 11-25% absorption of ferulic acid from a tomato). The total level of antioxidants in the blood increased significantly after just a

single glass of ale, again proving that antioxidants in beer are well absorbed (Ghiselli et al 2000) Not that any person in his right mind

Nwould settle for just a single glass!

5. It boosts vitamin B6; B12; folate and mineral levels. If compared to wine and spirits, beer is the only beverage that contains significant levels of vitamins. High homocysteine (Hcy) levels in the blood are associated with increased risk of CVD. Vitamins like B6; B12 and especially folate (all naturally occurring in beer) are now recommended as part of doctors’ orders to be taken daily to control elevated levels of Hcy (Walker, BRI, 2001). The minerals in beer come from both the malt and the brewing liquor. The beneficial ratio of potassium to sodium is particularly important in relation to cardiovascular disease.

6. Keeps homocysteine (Hcy) levels low. Van der Gaag and his colleagues found that drinking wine and spirits increased serum Hcy levels, whereas, counteracted by folates and vitamin B6, beer

consumption had no influence. A clear case of beer should be first for thirst!

7. Drinking beer boosts your soluble fiber intake and lowers cholesterol. One of the most effective forms of soluble fibre for lowering cholesterol is betaglucan, which is the predominant form of fiber in beer. Beers with high malt content like craft beers may provide up to 30% of the recommended daily fiber intake (Gromes et al 2000).

8. Drinking beer help in combating cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other immune system attacking diseases. Hops contain compounds that are unique and rare in nature –like prenyl flavonoids (8PN) which are phytoestrogens that are natural plant based compounds, which mimics the natural estrogens in the body (Bingham et al 1998).

The highest 8PN levels in beers have been found in dark and bitter ales and stouts and from craft breweries where whole hopping is practiced.

9. Beer ensures healthy bones. Beer has a nutritional benefit that promotes healthy bones and connective tissue (Dr. Jonathan Powell, Kings College, London). Because of the brewing process, silicon is leached from barley grain in a form that is readily accessible to the body.

10. Beer protects against gallstones. Prof. Oliver James, from the school of clinical medical studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, says that beer protect against gallstones, kidney stones and the bacterium Heliobacter pylori, which is directly linked to stomach ulcers and cancer.

11. Hoppy beer protects against cataracts. Certain hop flavonoids, in particular xanthohumol and its isomerised form isoxanthohumol, can show positive effects against heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, cataracts and certain forms of cancer.

12. Beer promotes sleep. A famous vitaminologist Professor Steep from Germany prescribes beer (not drugs) for insomnia. Two vitamins, lactoflavin and nicotinic acid that are present in beer are the secret weapons that promote

sleep. The same two vitamins also speed up bone degeneration after a fracture and prevent low blood counts. Hops in beer itself are a natural sedative that also promotes sleep.

13. Beer reduces risk of thrombosis The flavonoids that are present in roasted malt, also to a lesser extent in hops and barley, prevent blood platelets from clamping together –making the blood less sticky – therefore decreasing your risk of blood clotting that can cause heart attacks or thrombosis.

Wow…that was a pretty exhaustive list. We may not know the beers of Drayman’s, but we like the way they think. Lots of big words, but the gist of it is…there are health benefits to drinking beer in moderation. So we recommend that you cut this article out and keep it wherever you keep your beer. That way you always have a reminder of the benefits of beer. If you are interested in learning more, track down the books by Victor Preedy and Charlie Bamforth that you see pictured somewhere with this article. Until next time.

N Port Brewing’s Wipeout IPABy “King” James Swann

Hello again everyone! It’s Hot as Sinhere in Arizonaso, so I thought we should keep to the lighter and more refreshing side of IPAs for this week’s article. Having said so, my choice has fallen upon Port Brewing’s Wipeout IPA. As always, let’s first chat for a bit about the brewery.

Port Brewing opened its doors in early 2006 as an offshoot of the highly successful Pizza Port brewing/restaurant chain. The idea for Port Brewing was sparked when Stone

Brewing announced they would be expanding and therefore leaving their old facility in San Marcos CA. in favour of bigger digs in Escondido. Pizza Port owners Vince and Gina Marsaglia & new partners Tomme Arthur & Jim Comstock immediately acquired Stone’s old space and within a year were producing 16 different brews! In addition, the brewery was named 2007 Great American Beer Festival Small Brewery of the Year, and Tomme, Small Brewer of the Year. Just six short months later, Port Brewing and Tomme were again honored as Champion Small Brewery and Small Brewer at the 2008 World Beer Cup competition, one of the few breweries ever to win all four honours back to back. The rest as they say is history! Tasty History! I would have paid far more attention as a junior scholar had my history teachers given me this kind of education! As the Wiseman Homer Simpson once said: “Alright, brain! You don’t like me and I don’t like you, but let’s just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.” Indeed!

Now, on to the Beer! As you might have guessed, Wipeout IPA is a west coast style IPA brewed for drinking after a long hard day of surfing, or any other activity that’s takes a lot out of you. You know, activities such as listening to your

boss rattle on, or that lawn you keep swearing you are going to mow? It’s quite refreshing as IPAs go; big bitter citrus flavors hit your pallet first followed by a touch of pine resin and just a hint of malt to smooth things over. Following the west coast style edict, the finish is crisp, dry and grassy. From the tap the beer pours golden blonde with an off white head and nice lacing as the glass begins to empty. At 7.0% ABV. and 78 IBUs this brew could almost be considered an Imperial but its lighter texture & citrus hop flavors make for a truly thirst quenching experience. Scoring an impressive 99 out of 100 on Ratebeer.com, Wipeout IPA deserves every tasty point as I’m sure you will agree once you have quaffed it.

Great food pairings will include spicy hot wings or a burger smothered in BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese & bacon. Yes I know, everything goes with bacon but I just couldn’t resist! As always, keep sending me your ideas & opinions to [email protected] If I review a beer you have sent me as an idea, I will mention you as my Partner in Crime! Until next week, Drink Safely & Always Wear Your Beer Belt. Cheers! 16203 N. Scottsdale Rd.

The Night Owl

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Evelyn at [email protected] to possibly be featured here

each week. Please include pictures when possible.

BY EVELYN ROMANS

HeART of the City: Phoenix at Coach and Willies

Happy hours at your local cantina and weekend dance partying in Scottsdale can leave you feeling empty at times. Okay, well maybe not completely empty because we all know the variety of emotions that pulses through our bones and brains after a night of not-so-light drinking. Humor, excitement, confusion, and oh we can’t forget about lovely Embarrassment from the reflections we have of our nighttime escapades--all which seem to bring out sunglasses and Advil the following morning. How about we re-evaluate our night owl tendencies and strive to feel a wider diversity of emotions. For me, a great way of achieving this is to attend an artistically focused event. For individuals ready and willing to absorb ideas and perspective possibly unlike their own, attending such exhibits forces a person to reflect and judge whether the image displayed, music played, or fashion worn is moving enough to create some reaction in your brain that isn’t necessarily diluted with vodka (of course, it can be if you want it to).

I think some people forget or don’t even realize what an awesome art scene we have in our community. There are some pretty talented and passionate people residing amongst us and ready to explode with emotion translated into art. This Thursday consider heading to downtown Phoenix for an event showcasing local musicians, DJs, artists, and fashion designers all wanting to leave an imprint on your brain. HeART of the City: Phoenix will be held at Coach and Willies, a sports bar that doesn’t really feel like a sports bar—it’s cleaner with more tasteful décor and food. Feel something new there and learn a little bit more about the city we call home. Thursday, August 25th. Doors open 7:00 pm, Show starts at 8. $10 presale @ heartofthecityphx.eventbrite.com. 412 S. 3rd St.

I Wish it Snowed in August at Sugar Shack Sports Grill

It’s the end of August and in most parts of our country, people are starting to have autumn and cooler weather on

their brains. Boots, coats, and scarves are starting to take shape in people’s fall wardrobe fantasies. But nope not here, not even close. We’ll still be wearing shorts and sun dresses for awhile while complaining and hearing complaints from everyone about how hot it is. The highs for this week are still over or around 110 degrees. Yay. To help ease the pain of surviving in the desert during the summer, Sugar Shack in Scottsdale will have over 10,000 pounds of that precious, sugar-like substance unnaturally found in August, snow. It’s bound to be an interesting experience at this hidden, Scottsdale sports bar. To add to the festivities, live music, raffle prizes, drink specials and a silent auction will also be in session to help raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation. Sugar Shack will be donating a percentage of their evening sales to the foundation so make sure to at least stop by on your way to the club for a good cause. If you really want to play in the snow like a kid again, then I recommend showing up early when the event begins at 4 pm while the snow is still pure and white and unadulterated by drunken adults. Then maybe have one of their Suicide Absolut Bloody Mary afterwards. Saturday, August 27th. 4:00 pm – 2:00 am. 6830 E 5th Ave, Scottsdale. www.sugarshackaz.com/

“Surf’s Up”

In this hot weather, it’s nice sometimes to go to a place where the atmosphere takes you somewhere else. Flickas Baja Cantina has just that, a beach style feel with the painted aquarium on the wall and surf boards for wall decoration. They have happy hour Monday-Friday from 11am-7pm with different specials each day. $2.50 coronas are all day every day, and $4 wells. During the week Flickas ranges from $3 cheese burgers, .40 cent wings, $2.00 onion rings, and a complimentary buffet on Fridays from 6pm-7pm. A stage is set up in the back of this restaurant for bands to perform as well. A very casual neighborhood bar. 2003 N. Scottsdale Rd. Scottsdale, AZ 85251

“They say the Irish can drink”

Irish pub? Yes please! Rula Bula on Mill Ave is a nice little spot on the north side of the strip. Happy hour is Monday-Saturday from 2-7pm, and Sunday 2-6pm with $3 16oz drafts, 13 different appetizers from $2.50-$3.75, and $1 off well cocktails and house wines. I recommend the corn beef sliders and their BBQ wings, and if you are up to it…you can never go wrong with an Irish car bomb! 401 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281

“Live a little”

The Vig is more of a trendy, upscale neighborhood bar that is awesome if you don’t mind splurging a bit. Monday-Friday 3-6pm 1/2 off select appetizers, $2 off all wine by the glass, $1.50 off draft and premium beer, and $1.00 off domestic bottles, and their $5 vignature cocktail. Daily, they also have their $9 signature cocktails. You get a modern atmosphere with warm tones. Oder a greyhound and their sweet potato fries, I promise you will not be disappointed. 4041 N. 40th St. Phoenix, AZ 85018

THE HIGHER A MONKEY CLIMBS…THE MORE YOU SEE OF IT’S BEHIND

Saint Bonaventure, 1217~1274

Climbing your way to the top, whether it’s Mount Everest, the Corporate Ladder, the Top in your Field or the Top of your Game, it matters how you leave

the path you tread to get there. While contemplating that, take note of this; most of the most famous had to tread through many unsuccessful attempts at the brass ring along the way. Here are just a few which

might inspire you to go another round…

Akio Morita: Sony’s first product was a rice cooker that unfortunately didn’t cook rice as much as burn it

Walt Disney: Fired by a newspaper editor because, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”

Attempts with a number of businesses ending in bankruptcy

Albert Einstein: Did not speak until he was four and did not read until seven thought to be mentally

handicapped, slow and anti-social, expelled from school, was refused admittance to the Zurich

Polytechnic School. Going on to win the Nobel Prize and changing the face of modern physics.

Robert Goddard: Research and experimentation with liquid-fueled rockets, often rejected and mocked

by his scientific peers who thought his ideas were outrageous and impossible. Today rockets and space

travel are due largely in part to the work of this scientist

Socrates: Regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of the Classical era was called “an immoral corrupter of youth” was sentenced to

death kept teaching up until he was forced to poison himself.

Thomas Edison: Teachers told Edison he was “too stupid to learn anything.” he was fired from his first

two jobs for not being productive enough. Even as an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts

at inventing the light bulb.

Fred Astaire: His first screen test, the director of MGM noted “Can’t act. Can’t sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little. Astaire kept that note in his Beverly Hills home to remind him of where he came from.

Elvis Presley: Back in 1954, Elvis was unknown, Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, fired Elvis Presley after just one performance telling him,

“You ain’t goin’ nowhere, son. You ought to go back to drivin’ a truck.”

Ludwig van Beethoven: Incredibly awkward on the violin, his teachers felt he was hopeless at it and

would never succeed with the violin or in composing. He composed some of the best-loved symphonies of all time–five of them while he was completely deaf.

Michael Jordan: Cut from his high school basketball team. “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my

career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot,

and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Tom Landry: Coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Landry brought the team two Super Bowl victories, five NFC

Championship victories and holds the record for the most career wins. Having one of the worst first

seasons on record (winning no games) and winning five or fewer over the next four seasons.

More often than not, those who history best remembers were faced with numerous obstacles.

Media Link: The New Orleans Saints play the Oakland Raiders in a preseason tilt Sunday, Aug. 28, on NBC.

With over two decades of evolution, it’s hard to imagine what improvements EA Sports could possibly add to its long-running Madden franchise. Since the sport itself – and by default, the gameplay – has never really changed, the game must begin to include a deeper look at football, from its traditions and presentation to the behind-the-scenes management and team development.

This year’s gridiron offering features a variety of minor changes and some pleasant additions that fans have been clamoring for. “Madden NFL 12” is bringing the best animations and graphics to date, giving the game a more realistic feel. From the team run-outs and mascots to the uniforms and helmets that wear down and get dirtier throughout the game, the attention to visual details will have you confusing the game for the real thing. For those of you who enjoy building your own athlete, more control has been given to your character’s growth as you add points to your statistics through both practice and games.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers visit Lucas Oil Stadium to take on the Indi-anapolis Colts in this preseason game. The starters usually see more action in the third preseason game, so hopefully viewers will get to see quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning under center for more than just two or three offensive series.

A battle for first place in the American League West could be on tap tonight in Arlington, Texas, where the Texas Rangers close out a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. Michael Young and the Rangers would like to extend their narrow division lead over Torii Hunter and the Angels, and after this will have one more opportunity — the season-closing Sept. 26-28 series in Anaheim.
