Context

Knife injuries are common in our workplace. It is recognized that certain tasks will still require the use of a knife. This procedure will outline the standard general purpose cutting tools that can be used in replace of a knife by the majority of our employees in their everyday tasks to reduce the risk to ALARA.

From the safety injury database, date range: 2011-01-01 to 2013-09-29

Over the last 2 years we have had 35 knife injury's,- 25 of 35 knife injuries (71%) involve a folding knife of one type or another

• There are different cutting tools for different tasks and a knife should not be used for most of them.

• For years we have accepted the use of knives as a generic cutting tool.

• On our journey to zero harm, we have identified what general cutting tools should be used in the field.

• SPI SAF 38 has been created to define our standard for general cutting tools.

Expectation

• As per SPI SAF38 only identified employees will be issued knives for their trade. For all other cutting, the use of an appropriate cutting tool is to be used.

• All other employees will be issued the appropriate cutting tool for their task

• Employees are to hand their knife to their supervisor to receive the apprpriate cutting tool(s)

• No one is to use or carry a knife unless authorized.

Knife

Only designated workers shall be issued knives,

1. Electrical Department

2. Employees working with explosives

Cutting Snips

The Vale recommended general purpose cutting tool to be used is the “Bessey Multisnip”. (This tool cannot be used to cut explosives).

The stock code for the Bessey multisnip is- C11109394; the case is the KUNY PL18 stock code C11109396

.

Other types of cutting snips may be used.

Box cutter knife

The Vale recommended box cutter is the Olfa, stock code- C11109372. The replacement blade stock code is- C11109373.This tool is to be used by warehouse personal, and package and shipping. It can also be used as a general purpose cutting tool by others. Other similar box cutter knives may be used.

The picture is of a multi purpose snip which can cut the following with ease;
