Abstract - This paper explains outlines the new European Standards relating to intrusion and surveillance systems, EN 50131 and EN 50132. The background to the development of the standards is explained together with which par ts of the standards have been published, which par ts are available in draft and which are st ill awaited. The repor t concentrates on the signif icant differences between EN 50131 and BS 4737, the Br itish Standard that it will ultimately supercede and the Application Guidelines contained within EN 50132. The later provides overall guidance relating to the evaluat ion, selection, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance of surveillance systems.
