All men can see the tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.

What is the most annoying response?
“When people ask you why you did it and you say I don't know. That’s brain damage.”

Column ratios can help determine problems in grading requirements. Districts should decide what grade levels mean and use that to determine target ratios.

What’s an A?
Which block is more dense?
A guy sitting in a boat has a huge 200lb rock with him. The boat is floating in an enclosed pool of water. The rock is thrown overboard and sinks. What happens to the level of water on the side of the pool? And why?

When you build something you’re going to need to fasten stuff
In determining grades we have to “fasten” pieces of evidence together.
Why limit ourselves to using the nail of grading (averaging of percentage scores)?
What % of the total grade should EOC exams count?
Consider this burning question:
20%, 30%, 40%
Take this student….
Q1 = 58%Q2 = 68%Q3 = 77%Q4 = 85%
EOC = 90%
73.6% = C
What if we said a student that scores > 80% on the EOC must get at least a C?
What if we said a student must score at least 80% on the EOC to get an A?
I’m not saying percentages are bad, but they are just one type of fastener.
When you build your new structure, look at all your options.
Targets are important, but are specific things we teach to help students get at a larger theme.
Assessing at the strand level keeps the focus on the idea, makes a natural aggregation point (and makes it more manageable).
