SSC High School Students attend StraightTALK Assembly to Kickoff Red Ribbon Week Red Ribbon Week is a way for communities to unite and take a stand against drugs. Almost 31 million people have drug-use disorders. Red Ribbon Week started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. The people in Mexico City displayed red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance toward the use of drugs. The PALS at SSC organized a week of activities to support the idea of remaining drug free. WIA-IAM Inc. presented students, in grades 9-12, with StraightTALK on Tuesday, October 22nd for the kickoff of Red Ribbon Week. This is a mother and son who tell their story of his struggle with addiction. They presented their story in a very unique way including talking, acting, singing and crowd involvement. Following the assembly, students were asked to pledge their commitment to being drug free by painting their hands red and placing it on a banner.

Candy Needed to Send to Our TROOPS!!!It’s that time of the year again, we will be doing our Annual

Halloween Candy Buy Back starting November 4 through November 7, 2019. Donate your candy so we can send it to our troops! Last

year with your help we were able to donate 80 pounds!

We are going to try a new format for the Christmas Concert this year. We are going to combine grade levels for our 3 nights of holiday cheer! I believe it is so important for students to work together with different age levels. The older students are the leaders, and the younger ones gain confidence knowing that

they are on stage with the big kids. We will still have the same amount of concerts and the same amount of days, but check to see who your class gets

to perform with. Here is this year’s schedule:

Monday, December 2nd: 6:00-6:35 pm K-3(Adrien, Blust, Bartlett, Briggs)

Monday December 2nd: 7:00-7:35 pm K-3(Kroczaleski, Daniels, Courtemanche, Gibson)

Tuesday December 3rd: 6:00-6:35 pm K-3(Potts, Everitt, Kolka, LaBarge)

Tuesday December 3rd: 7:00-7:35 pm K-3(McTaggert, Raymond, LaPan, Robinson)

Thursday December 5th: 6:00-6:35 pm 4th-5th(Adams, Bush, Katt S., Malcolm)

Thursday December 5th: 7:00-7:35 pm 4th-5th(Katt J., Sullivan, Forro, Wendel)

Our theme this year is A Christmas Movie Special. You will recognize many songs from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Elf, The Polar Express, A

Charlie Brown Christmas, Home Alone, and many more! I can’t wait to show off just how professional you are, and the amazing concert in store for friends

and family.

Happy singing! Mrs. Freeman

NHS Fundraises for Local Food PantryWith the holiday season around the corner, NHS President Kelly Sullivan and Vice President Alec Zettel wanted to do something that would benefit the community. Borrowing ideas from previous years, they launched a fundraising project to help the Arenac County Food Pantry. By selling five-minutes-early-to-lunch passes, the students were able to raise over $1000 in five days. With special donations by Granny’s Pasties (a non-profit charity organization out of West Branch ran by 7th Grade teacher Mr. Meiser and his wife) and the NHS treasury, the final total reached $1500.

Long time blues player Larry McCray will make some appearances at Standish-Sterling Central Jr/Sr High School in the month of November capitulating with a concert on November 26 during the school day for the student body and some special guests. The national known blues player will make his first appearance on November 5th during the school day to work with the Choir and Band students to create a concert show that will include some of the Choir and Band students. He will speak to the music appreciation class regarding his path in the music business for over 25 years. A work/rehearsal session may be included later in the month before the final concert on the 26th.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NEED TO PAY CLASS DUES! In an effort to eliminate the need for class fundraisers, all high school students pay class dues of $10 per year. Class dues are used to defray the cost of decorations and supplies that each class uses throughout the year. Junior year, the class is responsible for put-ting on the Prom, and Senior year expenses include extra yearbook pages, Senior breakfast, and graduation decorations and flowers...just to name a few! Senior year is quite an expensive year for par-ents, so it is recommended that dues be paid in full ($40) prior to the start of Senior year.Parents may send in class dues with their student at any time. Re-mind your child to ask the Class Advisor for a receipt and keep it with your records until graduation! Many parents make one payment of $40, but paying $10 per year is also welcomed. You may mail a check for dues to the high school, drop off cash payments at the high school office, or send it in with your student. Be sure to note your child’s name and graduation year on the check or envelope. Make checks payable to “Standish-Ster-ling H.S.” Class of 2020: Advisors are Mrs. Benchley and Ms. SobierayClass of 2021: Advisors are Mrs. Martin and Ms. McKinnonClass of 2022: Advisors are Mrs. Walderzak and Mrs. YennaClass of 2023: Advisors are Mrs. Steinbauer and Mr. Wade We thank the parents and guardians who support the activities we plan for students throughout their four years of high school! If you have questions about the assessment of class dues to stu-dents, please contact the high school Principal, Mr. Williams.

SAVE YOUR FAMILY FARE RECEIPTS AND UPC LABELS !!!Student Council is collecting Family Fare receipts and Our

Family UPC labels for the SpartanNash “Direct your Dollars” and “Direct your Labels” programs. There is no easier

fundraiser we can do! Please send labels in to the High School to drop off in the office or give them to any Student Council member. These funds will help our Student Council attend leadership conferences throughout the coming school year.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Athletic Booster Club As many of you know we are not doing the Queen of Hearts drawing this year. To replace this fundraiser, we are hosting a chili/soup cookoff and euchre tournament. Teams will have the opportunity to earn cash prizes for being chosen as the best chili/soup in town. We will also have basket raffle items and a euchre tournament. Admission in free, however, you must purchase tickets to sample/vote on the best chili/soup. The team with the most tickets collected at their chili/soup station will win. We encourage community entries as well. If a community member’s chili/soup were to be chosen as the best, the cash prize would be given to the team of their choosing, and the community member would win bragging rights for the year! The euchre tournament will immediately follow the chili/soup cookoff. It is $10.00/person to enter. This event will be held on November 23rd at the American Legion Hall. Chili/soup cookoff starts at 5pm. Cash bar available. Please consider coming out to support the Booster Club and warm up with a hot bowl of your favorite chili/soup. We would like to congratulate the SSC Girls swim team on another undefeated season! They have several members that have qualified to participate at the state level in the coming weeks. Congratulations girls and good luck! Another “congratulations” goes out to the SSC Girls golf team that finished 3rd in the Tri-Valley Conference in their 2nd year of existence. Additionally, we would like to congratulate the girls that participated in the Regional tournament! Great season ladies! We have been asked what we plan to do with the money we have earned throughout the years. Since September of 2015 we have provided over $71,596.00 to our teams by way of grants to purchase equipment that wouldn’t ordinarilly be supplied by the school or cash deposits into team accounts for helping work concessions. We are responsible to make an annual payment to fund the field house. Additionally, we have funded several other projects around the school grounds. Examples are the soccer dug outs, the resurfacing of the baseball/softball scoreboards, and new signage on the press box. Also, we have provided several scholarships to graduating seniors. We are extremely proud to be able to provide these benefits to our school and teams. Finally, we have our sights set on building a new outdoor concession stand. You may wonder how this will benefit all sports programs? The new, more efficient concessions will relocate to provide fans faster service, and allow workers to watch the game as they work. We hope this will bring more fans and families to our field, thus generating more revenue for the Boosters. We know that this is a huge undertaking; however, we know with your support we can meet this new goal. We thank everyone for your support and look forward to what the future holds for this great organization!

Cost: $8-adults, $5-students

CentralTheatre

Presents:“Almost Maine”

2:00p

“Almost, Maine is a romantic comedy by John Cariani, comprising nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine. Welcome to Almost, Maine, a place that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada. And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist.

One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves

falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts

mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.”The fall play “Almost Maine” will be performed on November 22nd,

23rd, and 24th. Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7:00p, doors open at 6:30p, and the Sunday show begins at 2:00p, doors open at

1:30p. Tickets are $8 per person, and if they come to multiple shows, the second and third tickets are half price with proof of their ticket.
