History

From its extraordinary origins as a git rom the Gordonamily, Stanmore Gol Club has been both a place to play gol

seriously and also a retreat to enjoy the company o riends and

acquaintances. Pleasure and competition, companionship and

rivalry, striving against others and the private contest with the

course itsel; these are some o the themes that run through the

history o this club.

In 1882 Frederick Gordon bought Bentley Priory, a ne 18th century house,

which began the oundations or Stanmore Gol Club. Not content with a

country house and its grounds, Gordon bought neighbouring Stanmore

Park and transormed the landscape over the next decade with a railway,

hotel and gol course. Once Gordon had bought up much o Stanmore,

he built a branch line at a cost o 80,000 to link his estates with the main

rail connections at Wealdstone. He then turned part o Bentley Priory into

a luxury country hotel and began to lay out a gol course over Stanmore

Park, initially or the amusement o his riends and guests but which soonbecame the private club that is now Stanmore Gol Club.

Gordons personal wealth was estimated at 2 million and was soon tobecome one o the worlds greatest hoteliers. In London alone he owned

the First Avenue in Holborn, the Metropole in Northumberland Avenue,

the Grand in Traalgar Square, the Russell and Grosvenor too. He had large

hotels in Brighton, Eastbourne, Folkestone, Bexhill, Margate, Isle o Wight, up

north in Whitby and Harrogate and on the continent at Dieppe, Cannes and

Monte Carlo.

Gordon had an elite circle o riends including lawyers, city brokers and MPs,

and it was in 1893 together with his riend Thomas Francis Blackwell (o the

Crosse & Blackwell dynasty) that they turned Stanmore Gol Club into the

charming oasis that you see today.

The Course & Clubhouse

We are very proud o our gol course, which we believe to be the

most picturesque and enjoyable to play in the area.

The course plays to plays to 5952 yards as a par 69 and provides a good test

o gol or players o all abilities. The tree lined airways make accuracy rom

the tee important. We have two par 5s, ve tricky par 3s, and the remainder

par 4s o varying lengths. Each hole has a character o its own, and the

course oers spectacular views o the surrounding area.

The clubhouse sits behind the 18th green and oers a beautiul panoramao the course with an outdoor patio area acing the 18th green where

members and societies gather round with drinks in hand to watch the nal

competitors putt out!

The atmosphere is second-to-none and a warm and riendly welcome

awaits you. The catering team oers ne ood backed up with an excellent

service. We have a spike bar, a lounge, a dining area, unction acilities and

conerence rooms.

We also have TVs throughout the clubhouse showing all major sporting

events, substantial changing acilities or ladies and gentlemen, and ample

Memberships

Stanmore Gol Club is a very popular gol course with an active

membership o over 500. There is no initial joining ee and our currentsubscription rates are published on our website. The membership year

runs rom 1st April to 31st March and new members joining part-way

through the year are charged on a pro-rata basis.

There is a acility at a small premium or members who preer to pay monthly.

Although membership levels are restricted to ensure that the course is not

overplayed, we welcome applications rom prospective members o all categories.

James Reynolds, our Head Proessional since 2003 has been

coaching or 15 years and his relaxed approach and easy tounderstand style has proved to be most eective at all levels

rom beginners to tour proessionals, all with rst rate success.

James is assisted by proessionals Adam Connaughton and David Bunkerwho both enjoyed spells in the Middlesex County Squad beore turning proin 2005. Adam and David are also qualied PGA instructors and compete onthe PGA East region circuit and in National PGA events. Lessons & Coaching

Here at Stanmore Pro Shop our aim is to improve not only yourgol but also your enjoyment o this great game. Our lessons and

tuition packages oer the highest standards o PGA instruction.

Lessons are bookable in either , or 1 hour sessions, or

alternatively you can take advantage o a playing lesson over 9

or 18 holes. We can also tailor packages to suit your individual

requirements.

All sessions can be block booked in courses on the basis o six or the price o

St Lukes Hospice

Stanmore Gol Club is a keen und-raiser, particularly or thelocal St. Lukes Hospice or whom one recent event raised 2000,

besides proving great un or the golers.

St Lukes Director o Fundraising wrote: Special thanks are due to each and

every player or digging deep on the day to benet such a worthy cause.

We are an independent charity and like most charities at the moment, we

are eeling the results o the credit squeeze. This donation rom Stanmores

members is a welcome boost to help us meet our unding requirements.

The Greenkeepers Revenge Gol Day is an opportunity or Stanmores head

green keeper to inict retribution or any criticism that has been levelled

at him throughout the year by members who complain that the course

quality is not up to standard. Industrial airway mowers are placed to guard

the greens, pin positions are chosen to ensure nigh impossible putts, ags

are randomly removed rom greens, and golers are dowsed by the course

sprinklers when they least expect it.
