Our stylish, simple little home is quickly morphing into a toddler kingdom, complete with toys and unrolled toilet paper stretching from one room into another. Well, maybe it s not that bad. But it is a change, and there are parts of our former stylish, simple life that I will miss, like getting to the screwdriver drawer without first moving the playpen. But I wouldn t go back & in spite of my resistance to the change in my stuff and my daily routine, I wouldn t change life with Eva one bit & not for all the style and simplicity in the world. Not for the quiet quaintness of a romantic candlelit dinner or the relaxed contentment of a lazy Saturday morning sleeping in (either of which may have put us in this position in the first place). We are moving forward into God s good future, and we are definitely experiencing God s blessing abundantly. But change isn t only happening in our house & you may have noticed it at church too. The family is growing, and it is going to require some adjustments on the part of those of us who have become very comfortable in our stylish, simple little church. Perhaps most noticeably, the kids are taking over! Also noticeable is that I (and I m guessing you too) don t know everyone s name anymore. I m working at it, but it seems as soon as I learn the names of one new family, another unfamiliar face is making his or her way through the greeting line after worship. Here s where I need your help: one thing that we all love about Stanton Church is that it has a close-knit, family-like feel, which happens because we are, in fact, a close-knit family. And that dynamic is one of our most attractive features to visitors and guests. However, I also recognize that growth, which is a very exciting, positive, healthy sign of life in the church, can also seem to threaten the family feel of an intimate community. But, fear not! I have come up with a plan to prevent the loss of intimacy that can affect growing churches. Here it is: this Sunday, to extend the depth and meaning of the sacrament of communion which we will celebrate together, when you see someone with whom you have never eaten before, INVITE THEM TO DINNER! It’s the end of the world as we know it. Eva is walking. This morning she beat us… and Kincaid… to the dog food bowl and managed to stuff her little chipmunk cheeks full of kibble before Becky came swooping in to stop her. Again, the items on the lower shelves are being moved to higher shelves. The baby gates are being mounted on both ends of the staircase. The safety latches are being installed on the lower cabinets. Our stylish, simple little home is quickly morphing into a toddler kingdom, complete with toys and unrolled toilet paper stretching from one room into another.

Well, maybe it’s not that bad. But it is a change, and there are parts of our former stylish, simple life that I will miss, like getting to the screwdriver drawer without first moving the playpen.

But I wouldn’t go back… in spite of my resistance to the change in my stuff and my daily routine, I wouldn’t change life with Eva one bit… not for all the style and simplicity in the world. Not for the quiet quaintness of a romantic candlelit dinner or the relaxed contentment of a lazy Saturday morning sleeping in (either of which may have put us in this position in the first place). We are moving forward into God’s good future, and we are definitely experiencing God’s blessing abundantly.

But change isn’t only happening in our house… you may have noticed it at church too. The family is growing, and it is going to require some adjustments on the part of those of us who have become very comfortable in our stylish, simple little church. Perhaps most noticeably, the kids are taking over! Also noticeable is that I (and I’m guessing you too) don’t know everyone’s name anymore. I’m working at it, but it seems as soon as I learn the names of one new family, another unfamiliar face is making his or her way through the greeting line after worship. Here’s where I need your help: one thing that we all love about Stanton Church is that it has a close-knit, family-like feel, which happens because we are, in fact, a close-knit family. And that dynamic is one of our most attractive features to visitors and guests. However, I also recognize that growth, which is a very exciting, positive, healthy sign of life in the church, can also seem to threaten the “family feel” of an intimate community. But, fear not! I have come up with a plan to prevent the loss of intimacy that can affect growing churches. SRC CORE VALUES

We are a community of grace. We value relationships with one another and with God.

We live in fellowship, committed to accepting and supporting one another. We value discipleship along life’s journey.

We study scripture, worship, and pray to foster our growth in Christ. We value mission in our community and throughout the world.

We follow Christ’s call to care for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the human community.

Keep up to date with what’s happening at SRC by checking out our website at www.stantonrc.org. View the church calendar, monthly newsletters,

and announcements and events.

Continued from page 1 Make it casual… make it comfortable… meet at a restaurant if hospitality isn’t your favorite thing… but

break bread together with someone with whom you’ve never eaten before because it’s the single best way to form a connection in relationship with one another, and because eating together is what families, and what Christians, do. Just don’t feed them dog food.

I hope this finds you toddling toward a healthy, growing family in Christ. Phil

Pine Ridge Mission Trip

We have reserved our week on the Pine Ridge Reservation for this coming summer. Dates: Trip dates are August 3-9, 2013 on the Rez (add days for travel as needed). Participants: This week is a Family Week, so in addition to adult volunteers, kids ages 6-12 are encouraged to come, with their parent(s), and there will be a GREAT weeklong program catering to their learning and interest in the Lakota culture and history and the Reservation landscape. Kids ages 13 and up are encouraged to come as well, and will participate in cultural immersion and work projects alongside the adult volunteers. Expense: The cost for this year's trip is $450 per person, which includes all transportation by van, t-shirt, all accommodations, and food on the Rez. You'll be responsible for food on the road, souvenirs and donations. Those who would like to make other travel arrangements (ie: flying or driving yourself) are responsible for those expenses. Scholarships: are available... please don't allow finances to come between you and this opportunity. We can help! What's it like? For info, check out www.re-member.org, find Re-Member on Facebook, or talk to Phil or anyone else who has been to Pine Ridge. Hurry: We are unfortunately limited to 17 spots, so sign up quickly by emailing or call-ing me! If the demand far exceeds this number, I will consider reserving a second week in September or October for those of us who are no longer "school age." If you can't make it: Those of you who are not interested or cannot attend, please consider supporting this mission by making a financial gift to support the scholarship fund and/or offset the overall travel expenses (every volunteer is subsidized... actual costs are over $700 per person!) Checks: Financial support or trip deposits should be made out to Stanton Reformed Church, memo: Pine Ridge Trip 2013.

After auditing our oil and propane expenses it became apparent we could be doing much better. We have changed vendors and expect to have significant savings. Any other suggestions or ideas on ways to save are always welcomed.

Stanton Reformed Church Nursery is flourishing. Infants and Toddlers abound. Due to the blessings of so many little ones, the Christian Education Committee is approaching nursery care a little differently. We have decided to split the nursery into two age groups: Infant Nursery will serve children ages 0 - walking and our new Toddler program called “Little Lambs” will serve children ages walking-3. (Children age 3 by July 1 are welcome to move to the Children and Worship room downstairs). Structured time including songs, bible story, time for giving thanks to God, and free play will outline Toddlers time. Stories and soothing music will outline time for Infants. Infants will occupy the far end of the Learning Center while the divider will separate them from Little Lambs. Scheduled workers will rotate teaching and leading the groups. We are scheduling one adult and one high school student with the Little Lambs and one adult with the infants. If you are interested in serving in either class, please contact Becky Pratt at the church office.

SRC CHOIR SCHEDULE

PENTECOST

Just In Case You Wanted To Know... On May 19th we will celebrate Pentecost. So I wanted to share a little bit about what this odd celebration is. This isn’t historical information. It is just info that helps us connect with and identify God’s Spirit. It was written by a pastor friend, Rev. Dawn Alpaugh, of the Pleasant Ridge Reformed Church in Doylestown, PA. So we will celebrate Pentecost later this month, and I love how God takes the time and makes the effort to send his Spirit in a new and different way so that we can feel his presence and experience him as the breath of our churches. That being said I always wonder how much we really “get” the Holy Spirit. Mainline denominations, like ours, are not always so good at talking about the Holy Spirit. We prefer to speak of God and Christ, while leaving the Holy Spirit as just some obscure third part of the trinity. I think this is a disservice. Furthermore, when we do talk about the Spirit we act as though Pentecost is the first time we hear about it, which is simply not the case. We can see the Spirit of God from the very beginning of time. Before we even hear about the forming of the world we meet God’s Spirit. Genesis 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.” Did you catch it? The wind of God. That’s God’s Spirit, moving and creating and entering the yet unformed world. Then in the second chapter of Genesis we read, “Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.” So we see that God doesn’t just send his Spirit to the world, he actually breathes it into the first person. In fact, the way that the first person is able to breathe and move and exist is because of the Spirit of God. Then a little later, in the book of Ezekiel, we read about a conversation between God and Ezekiel. There is a valley full of human bones and God speaks to the prophet with these words, “Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.” There are countless other times when we see and experience God’s Spirit in the Old and New Testaments--words and examples that remind us that God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, has been with us from the beginning. Yes, Pentecost is a wonderful celebration of God’s Spirit, given to the church, so that we could grow and evolve and reach out to the world with the Good News, but God’s Spirit was working among us way before that moment when the followers experienced the wind, tongues of fire and different languages on that first Pentecost. God’s Spirit is a gift. It’s God’s way of showing Godself to the world. It’s God’s way of giving us life, working among us and helping us to work with one another. It is, in a sense, our connection to God.

Christian Symbol The butterfly symbolizes resurrection, Easter and the new life we have in Christ Jesus.

As a caterpillar disappears into a chrysalis, so Jesus’ dead body was hidden in a tomb. The emergence of the butterfly, rising into the sky in its beautiful new body, reminds us of Christ’s resurrection — and ours.

STANTON LEARNING CENTER IS NOW OFFERING TRANSITIONAL

KINDERGARTEN!!

Transitional Kindergarten is a wonderful program offered for children not yet ready to enter Kindergarten. Whether a child is chronologically late, or simply due to the uniqueness of individual developmental readiness (social,

physical or academic), the gift of a transitional year will better prepare many children for the years ahead.

Many developmental milestones will be reflected through the classroom curriculum.

It is our goal to promote enthusiasm for learning. We offer a calm, nurturing environment in which the children can be challenged at their individual levels to

develop confidence in the skills needed for future success in school.

The teachers will provide a balance of structure and self-direction. Academic skills will be reinforced through a rich curriculum that incorporates

reading, handwriting, mathematics, history and science/health. Weekly specials will include physical education, art, cooking and Spanish. Computers

and music will be part of our everyday curriculum.

Our curriculum outline and a list of educational resources is posted on our website, www.stantonlearningcenter.com. Please contact Andrea at 908-236-0917 or
