They will share with us their Christian faith with
enthusiasm, commitment and excitement. The rest of us
will be able to see the wonderful impact that Sunday
School, youth group, mentoring, worship and youth
conferences have had on their lives. We may even
have the experience of having our more “mature” faith
rekindled and renewed. Come to church that Sunday
with the great expectation that something wonderful is going to happen as we gather for family worship.
The Youth are taking over the church!

Presbyterian Women
Sunday Calling all Women! Sunday, May 8th is Mother’s
Day and also Presbyterian Women Sunday. In
worship we will celebrate how women through-
out the ages have answered the call to worship, served and shared in ways that
built up the Kingdom of God. Presbyterian Women will lead us in a celebratory
worship experience remembering and lifting up the many ways women have
strengthened and provided leadership to Starmount Church. Dr. Diana Wright, a
nationally recognized leader in the field of Christian Education and Associate
Presbyter of Salem Presbytery, will be bringing an insightful message. She is
blessed with the capacity to open familiar scripture to new understandings. Men,
you need to come too. You might just learn something new about how our
women have lived out their faith in the life of the church.
The joy, the talents and the enthusiasm
of our Starmount youth will be on display
on Sunday May 22. They will be taking
over the leadership of our worship service
on this special Youth Sunday. They will
share parts of the service including music,
liturgy and preaching.

Our Story
As we leave behind another Easter
season, it seems appropriate to ask how it all
impacts on us. For Christians, it is much more
than a nice story with a happy ending.
There is more to this story than first meets
the eye. The story focuses on Jesus as it
should, but Jesus is not the only one who is
important in the story. The story of Jesus’
betrayal is incomplete without including
Judas and Peter in the narrative. And the
crucifixion part needs the crowds and the
soldiers nailing Jesus to the cross to be
complete. If we are honest with ourselves,
we fit into some of the less-than-glamorous
rolls in the Easter drama. So the story of
Easter is not just about Bible characters, it is
also our story.
In the same way, the story of Jesus’
Resurrection is not simply about him. It is also
about the people around him. It’s about
people who deserted Jesus. But when they
faced the Resurrected Lord, they found
something so precious that they gave their
lives over to sharing the good news with
others.
So Easter is not only about Jesus being
raised to new life, it is our story too! It’s about
the followers of Jesus being raised to new life
and through the Holy Spirit to new power.
The good news of Easter is that, like the
disciples, we are extended an opportunity to
live a new life of faith.
So, just because the Bible runs out of
pages doesn’t mean that the story is over.
The story, the heritage, the tradition, the call
continues for us. It is about Emmanuel, God
with us and through the power of God it is
about accomplishing more than we ever
dreamed. We are part of the story. And
even now, when we reach out to others with
the love of God, like Jesus, we shake up the
status quo of our world and call attention to
the love of God, which claims us for lives lived
and shared in completeness and
abundance.
Abundant living for you!
Pastor Ray
Sabbatical
On the seventh day,
God rested. We are
instructed to do the
same. But we don’t
always do it well. But
that doesn’t mean
that we shouldn’t.
As is standard with
other called and
installed positions in Salem Presbytery, my
terms of call include a 3-month sabbatical in
the 6th year of ministry service. It’s hard to
believe that this day has come; it’s something
I’ve been planning for a while now, but for it
to actually happen is another thing: my
sabbatical.
“So what will you be doing?” is the
biggest question I have been asked lately.
While I will be away from everyone for three
months, this is anything but vacation.
Sabbatical is intended to rest and renew,
which I will be doing. But during my time, I will
be working to finish my final project for my
Doctor of Ministry degree, which I intend to
defend in the fall. I will find renewal in the
adventure to Ireland that Austin and I will take
later this month.
During this sabbatical, I will refrain from
contact with anyone from Starmount and will
not attend any Starmount-sanctioned functions,
regardless of location. If we happen to run into
each other at the supermarket, I won’t run
away, but I ask that we refrain from “talking
shop”. Although it will be difficult to be apart
from everyone at Starmount and I will miss
everyone dearly, I anticipate that my time
away will be one of rest and renewal, ready to
return to my call as teaching elder and to
Starmount Presbyterian Church with fresh eyes.
I am beyond grateful for this opportunity.
I look forward to sharing my adventures
with everyone upon my return to worship on
July 31. In the meantime, I will continue to pray
for each and every one of you as I have up to
this point, as this church family works hard with
Pastor Ray and the transition team to continue
to look to Starmount’s next chapter!
Blessings,

Christian Church when the Holy Spirit came to
the disciples and asked them to spread the
words of Jesus throughout the world. The
national church has earmarked these funds to
invest in the youth of the church and for
ministries which address the needs of at-risk
children. The funds are distributed to:
Congregation child and youth programs
focused on children at risk. (40%)
Volunteer programs that bring young adults
together in fellowship, worship, and service

Please prayerfully consider what you can give
to this valuable contribution to the future of

May Birthdays
On a Friday and
Saturday in April, our 24
Starmount volunteers
collected food at the
new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Grocery
Store, Guilford College for the Greensboro
Urban Ministry (GUM) Spring Food Drive.
GUM was thrilled and so were we to
receive a grand total of 4,430 pounds of
non-perishable food for the GUM food
pantry!
Starmount brought in more food than any
other group or congregation. This is exciting
because the Wal-Mart store was new to
the drive AND we have never collected a
total of 1,000 lbs., not to mention 4,430 lbs.!!
The volunteers deserve special recognition,
especially for braving brutal wind and cold!
A big THANK YOU goes to our volunteers:
Carol & Fred Andresen; Katherine & Buddy
Poole; Barbara & Don Spencer; Peggy &
Frank Smith; Nancy Edwards; Stan Dixon;
Marilyn & John Tyson; Ann & Ben Parks;
Connie Fowler; Evelyn Garrison; Kim & Keith
Dawson; Frances Gallagher; Susanne
McIntire; Jean Anne Finley; Jim Lowe;
Donna & Tim Moffitt. Dear Starmount Members,
We would like to say thank you for all the prayers
that have been said and all the well wishes we
have received on behalf of our granddaughter,
Taylor Hunt. We are very blessed to be a part of
such a warm, loving family in Starmount Church
and cherish each one of you. Taylor’s surgery
went very well and recovery is underway. She is
responding well to everything so far to the point
that the doctors have not only released her from
the hospital, but they have been released to
travel back to Apex rather than having to stay in
the Baltimore area for now. Quite a blessing for
them. Again thank you and God’s love to you all.
Cordially,
Cynthia & Mitchell Hunt

Yoga
Comes to
Starmount
Starmount is
offering yoga
classes to invite
our members and friends to “Move to
Improve.” Yoga is a discipline that
strengthens the body, focuses the mind,
and invites the spirit to heal and grow.
Jennifer Dowler, a Starmount member and
recent graduate of an eight month course
with the Institute of Integrative Yoga
Therapy, will teach classes based on the
Iyengar method. Iyengar influenced
classes are designed for students to learn
about the proper alignment of poses. It is
a method of yoga practice which allows
the student to slow down, learn more
about anatomy, and provide relief and
relaxation as well as building strength and
inner focus. Starmount is offering three
classes in Room 321:
Tuesday 11:30-12:30 – Chair Yoga is
designed for seniors and beginners who
prefer a slow, gentle stretch to awaken
muscles and joints and breathe more
deeply.
Friday 9:30-10:30 am – Beginner/
Intermediate is for students who prefer a
more intense class moving from standing
to the floor. This is designed to welcome
preschool parents.
Sunday 5:30-6:30 pm – Beginner/
Intermediate is for students who may have
regular business hours through the week
and cannot attend class during the
business day.
Starmount will provide blankets and blocks
and will have a limited number of mats
available. If you have your own mat and
strap, please bring them with you.
For more information, contact Jennifer at
[email protected] or call
Jennifer at 336-282-4887.

Little Johnny and his family were having
Sunday dinner at his Grandmother’s
house. Everyone was seated around the
table as the food was being served.
When little Johnny received his plate,
he started eating right away. “Johnny!
Please wait until we say the blessing!”
his mother insisted. “We always say the
blessing before we eat at home.”
“That’s at our house,” Johnny ex-
plained. “But this is Grandma’s house
and she knows how to cook!”

Habitat Building
on Faith
Once again Starmount will be participating in
the Building on Faith to build a Habitat house
this summer. The tentative start date is
Saturday, June 4, 2016 with a dedication in
October 2016. The house will be built in the
Quail Oaks subdivision. The work day starts at
7:45 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. or earlier if all
the work is done. You don’t need construction
skills; the Habitat staff will train you.
This is a great opportunity for a Sunday School
class, Bible Study group, a Committee, a
Circle or any church group to work as a
team. If your group would like to work a
specific date or task, let me know so I can
sign you up with Habitat. A draft schedule
with dates and tasks is available on the
Mission bulletin board. Sign-up forms will soon
be available.
If you are interested in serving lunch on a
Saturday contact Pat Hall at
[email protected] or see her on Sundays
after worship. She will put you in touch with
the Habitat staff that coordinates lunch.
The age Limits are 14 – 16 for painting or
landscaping; 16 – 18 tasks that don’t require
power tools, a ladder or being on the roof.
Age 18 and up can work on any task.

Where does the produce
go that we grow in the
Starmount Community
Garden? Our garden,
tended by a faithful group
of Saturday morning
regulars, has produced
over 7,000 pounds of
vegetables since we started in 2009. 97% of
that has been donated to Share the Harvest.
Share the Harvest will begin its fourth year with
distributions beginning on June 6, 2016 from the
Interactive Resource Center. Share the Harvest
is a not-for-profit that collects and distributes
produce during the growing season to
agencies in Guilford County that either prepare
a meal for the hungry or have a food pantry.
There are collection sites throughout the
county where gardeners can take their extra
produce all season. Community gardens,
commercial growers and home gardens have
been generous and the donations are
especially appreciated by those for whom a
fresh tomato or just-picked green beans taste a
whole lot better than canned.
For more information, please visit:

Share the Harvest needs volunteers. Or,

Angelou. “In this loving
recollection of a complicated
relationship, Angelou for the first
time details the mother-
daughter journey to
reconciliation and unwavering connection
and support. After their reunion in San
Francisco, angry and resentful at what she
viewed as the abandonment of her and
her brother, Angelou took years to warm to
her mother, Vivian Baxter, calling her Lady
rather than Mother. But Baxter’s
unconditional acceptance and
appreciation of her daughter, through
unwed motherhood, a failed marriage, and
career ups and downs, won Angelou’s love
and respect. Angelou vividly portrays a
spirited woman, unbowed by the limitations
of race and sex, who ran a boardinghouse
and gambling house and taught her
daughter the determination, street smarts,
and survival skills that have helped Angelou
carve a space for her identity and
formidable talents. Photos enhance this
remarkable and deeply revealing chronicle
of love and healing.” Review from Booklist

Told with her trademark humor and heart,
Paterson's tales reveal details about her life

thinkers and inspiring leaders, Brooks explores
how, through internal struggle and a sense of
their own limitations, they have built a strong
inner character. Labor activist Frances
Perkins understood the need to suppress
parts of herself so that she could be an
instrument in a larger cause. Dwight
Eisenhower organized his life not around
impulsive self-expression but considered self-
restraint. Dorothy Day, a devout Catholic
convert and champion of the poor, learned
as a young woman the vocabulary of
simplicity and surrender.” “The Road to
Character provides an opportunity for us to
rethink our priorities, and strive to build rich
inner lives marked by humility and moral
depth.” From Amazon.com Call no. 170.44

ONE CHURCH, ONE BOOK Wednesday, May 18
noon-1 p.m., parlor Starmount’s book discussion
group will be reading and
discussing Loving Frank, A Novel
by Nancy Horan. 377 p. “No
matter your allegiance to the
narcissistic genius who was Frank Lloyd
Wright, it is Mamah Cheney who will
mesmerize you with her intelligence,
sensitivity and straightforward innocence. To
dare to write such a complicated true story
and to succeed so masterfully is a feat few
authors can achieve. Nancy Horan is a
remarkably gifted writer who brings you
close to the complex love affair between
Mamah and Frank and grips you with her
elqouent prose. I recommend this book to
anyone who wants to dive into an extremely
satisfying novel and not emerge from its spell
until you turn the last page.” Amazon.com
