He told the police that the area was lighted by street lamps thereby enabling him to identify, by face but not by name, the attacker of clear complexion who he said lives in the neighborhood. The victim was taken to the hospital in San Ignacio where the injury was officially certified as wounding. Police investigation led to the detention, positive identifica- tion, arrest and formal charging of Alvaro Aldana, 18, Belizean unemployed of a Dalia Street address in San Ignacio Town, for the crime of robbery. He appeared in court on Monday, 24 October, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge. The prosecution objected to the grating of bail on the grounds that, having now been arrested for another crime, places him in violation of the conditions of the bail for attempt murder and firearms offences which he is currently on. Notwithstanding, Magistrate Linsbert Willis proceeded to offer the accused bail in the sum of$5,000. He was ordered to return to court on Wednesday, 25 January 2012. The most valuable Rotarystamp was on sale for only twohours in 1981. In March of that year PremierGeorge Price returned to Belizefrom meetings in London witha proposed Heads of Agreementin hand. The Heads of Agreement wassupposed to pave the way forBelize’s independence fromGreat Britain later that sameyear. The Belizean people wereopposed to the Heads ofAgreement because theybelieved that it ceded too muchto Guatemala and so beganviolent protests in Belize City.

In the midst of the political unrest, on

30 March, The BelizePostal Service issued a set ofeight stamps to commemorateRotary’s 75th anniversary. Oneof the sets carried a map ofBelize along with Rotary’sanniversary logo and threeRotary emblems. The 75 centsstamp however appeared to beceding the entire Cayo Districtto Guatemala, due to the similarcolors that delineated them. The Belize Postal Servicereacted by immediatelywithdrawing the entire seriesand destroying it. However, some were already sold in thetwo hours that the series was incirculation. The few that weresole “Today, it’s worthUS$1,200 each - if any can befound,” Emmanuel Serrieresays. The rest of the stamps in theseries were reissued in May,1981, and again in September, this time overprinted with thedate of Belize’s independence.

On October 19, 2011 the staffat the Western Health RegionalHospital in Belmopan waspleased to announce thesuccessful delivery of a set oftriplet girls that took placethis morning at approximately9:51am to Ms. Irene Garciaand her common law husbandAlfred Avilez. The girls weighed in at4 ½ lbs, 4 ¼ lbs and 4lbsrespectively. Minister of Health, Hon.Pablo Marin visited with theproud parents that Friday topersonally congratulate themand the team of doctors andnurses that coordinated thedelivery by caesarean sectionafter thirty seven week ofgestation.

A short ceremony was heldon Friday October 7th at theSan Pedro Polyclinic tocelebrate the new extendedopening hours of the clinic, theexpansion of medical servicesoffered and also the officialreveal of the new name, Dr.Otto Rodriguez San PedroPolyclinic II. Minister of Health, Hon.Pablo Marin gave the keynoteaddress in which he spoke ofthe good work and dedicatedyears that Dr. Rodriquez hadgiven to the people of SanPedro. He went on to acknowledge

that the town needed a properhospital because of itsgrowing population and touristvisits. “I have listened to yourconcerns...we need a hospitalfor our people, for our Belizeanbrothers and sisters that arehere in San Pedro. The firststep would be to find a locationfor a new modern hospital.”said Minister Marin At the conclusion of theceremony, Dr. Rodriguez’swidow, Mireya and her sonHenry joined the Minster andthe Mayor San Pedro, Elsa Pazin the unveiling of the newname.

October marks the start of the flu season and the Ministryof Health has seen a slightincrease in flu cases in specificregions around the country sincelast month. The Minster of Health, Hon.Pablo Marin, on the advise ofthe Director of Health Services, reminds the public that handwashing is the single mosteffective measure for preventingthe spread of infectionsincluding the Influenza H1N1. While most of us simply rubhands together then rinse, it isimportant to remember toalways include spaces betweenfingers, thumbs, back of handsand fingernails. Rinse thoroughly under cleanrunning water then dry handswith a clean hand towel ordisposable tissue paper. If in a public bathroom, usepaper towel, be careful not totouch the faucet after hands arewashed. After drying hands, turn thefaucet off using the paper towel. If no paper towel is available, drain your hands in the sink andallow your hands to dry by air.

This action should beperformed frequently andshould be performed by allmembers of society. It is important to wash yourhands before: preparing food, eating, treating wounds, givingmedicine and before touchingyour face Also wash your hands after:preparing food; using thetoilet; changing a diaper;blowing your nose, coughingor sneezing; attending to a sickperson; and handling dirtyobjects.

BY: Deborah Reneau,Vice Principal, Upper DivisionSanta Elena Primary School, Cayo A new era in the way teachersteach our children is dawning atSanta Elena Roman CatholicPrimary School in Santa ElenaTown, Cayo. In June 2010 a Teachers’Leadership Program began forSanta Elena Primary Schoolteachers. The program was facilitated byDr. Jennifer Morrow fromIndependent Day School inTampa, Florida, USA and Mrs.Abigail Wade who is currentlyserving as the Itinerant ResourceOfficer from the NationalResource Center for InclusiveEducation (NaRCIE), workingout of the District EducationCenter in Santa Elena, Cayo.

Teachers Actively Participating In The Program

Minister of Education, Hon. Patrick Faber interacting withSpecial Needs Students

The program included topicssuch as Brain-Based Research,Cooperative Learning, MultipleIntelligences, DifferentiatedInstruction, and the MultipleOptions for Results in Education(MORE) approach. Facilitators Morrow and Wadeused the techniques and strategies, developed by Dr. SpencerKagan, to deliver instruction. Dr Spencer Kagan isan internationally acclaimedresearcher, presenter and authorof over 100 books, chapters, andscientific journal articles. He is aformer clinical psychologist andfull professor of psychologyand education at the Universityof California. He is the principalauthor of the single most compre-hensive book for educators in

each of four fields: cooperativelearning, multiple intelligences, classroom discipline, andclassroom energizers. His instruc-tional strategies are used inteacher training institutes in manycountries. The team of teachers fromSanta Elena Primary, thatparticipated in the July 2011Summer Academy in Orlando,Florida were so stunned by whatthey saw and experiencedthat they wanted their Belizeancolleagues and peers to learn fromthis incomparable speaker. Mrs.Wade persisted and invitedDr. Kagan to Belize. In his ownwords, “Persistence meltsresistance” prevailed. Two months after attendingthe workshop Mrs. Wade receivedan email from the Kagan Instituteinforming that Dr. Kagan hasaccepted the invitation to come toBelize. We were ecstatic as this isthe 33rd country he has visited. Acommittee was quickly formed atSanta Elena Primary School tofacilitate his visit. The committee got the message

out through email, advertisementon the local TV station alongwith a presentation about Dr.Kagan’s work delivered to theCayo Association of PrimarySchool Principals (CAPSP).Some were instantly excited whileothers required coaching andencouragement. Dr. Kagan and his son Miguelwho co-authored many of thebooks, arrived in Belize onThursday, 20 October 2011. The welcoming entourageseized the opportunity to engageDr. Kagan in conversation fromthe airport to San Ignacio Town.We immediately got so comfort-able speaking with him as he wasso down to earth and related to oursituation and education system. Dr. Kagan has been all over the

world but this was his first visitto Belize. Upon reaching SanIgnacio he insisted that he wantedto go to the workshop venue andensure that everything was set inplace for the following day. Over one hundred and twentyadministrators and representativesfrom 44 primary schools, twohigh schools and one juniorcollege attended the Friday’ssession. Some of the comments fromteachers attending Friday’ssession include: “Thanks forincluding us in this mostinteresting workshop.” “Kudos to you teachers forplanning and organizing sucha workshop.” “The time spent wasworthwhile and very engaging.Well, what can I say, but many, many congratulations to allconcerned for making thoseworkshops happen!” “The most engaging workshopI have ever been to, he

just change the meaning ofworkshops for me Wasn’t theatmosphere great? A totally, totally positive experience.” The administrators, managersand representatives attendingFriday’s session were over-whelmed by what they experi-enced. For the second session onSaturday, 22 October, one

hundred and sixty teachersgathered at the George PriceCenter We started promptly at 8:30a.m.From the onset I could have feltthe energy in the room. The teach-ers were very engaged and somewere soaking it all up like asponge. By the end of the sessionthe only complaints I heard wasthat time was limited and theywanted more. The teachers stoodup and gave Dr. Kagan standingovations and cheered him on. Itwas an awesome sight and the re-sounding cheers made itmemorable.I was moved almost totears. This is just the beginning. On Monday, 24 October, Dr.Kagan was joined by Minister ofEducation, Hon. Patrick Faber,on tour of Santa Elena PrimarySchool. Together they toured class-rooms from every division. DrKagan kept Minister Faberabreast of what was transpiring inevery classroom and welcomedany questions or comments. My heart leaped for joy as Inoticed Minister Faber’s keeninterested by what he was seeingsuch as students working coopera-tively and not bothered the leastbit by visitors in their classrooms. “I can see that this is the startof something BIG and theMinistry of Education willsupport this program fully.”commented Minister Faber. We have only just begun. Wewill proceed purposefully and willpersevere while we proceed! Thanks to Mrs. Abigail Wadeand Dr. Jennifer Morrow forwanting to share with ourBelizean teachers this dynamicand excellent method. We appre-

ciate their passion for thedevelopment of our educationsystem; we appreciate theirdrive to ensure that all Belizeanteachers give only the best to ouryoung children. Thanks to all the supportgiven by other stakeholders andschools. Together we have made, and will continue to make thisrevolution in education happen.

He is known as the man whowrote the words to the origninalNational Anthem of Belize andtoday, over 78 years later thewords of Samuel AlfredHaynes rings so very true. The following was compiledthree years ago, on 17 August2008, by AmbassadorAdalbert “Bert” Tucker. It is entitled “Wrong Educa-tion: Curse to Social Order,World Peace”.By: Samuel Alfred Haynes Belizean Patriot, Internation-alist, UNIA Leader.Philadelphia Tribune, 15 June1933. Education of the right kindis a blessing to any people buteducation of the wrong kind is acurse to the social order andworld tranquility. The church and the schoolare the chief cornerstones ofcivilization. The first shapes -and the belief in some object ofdivinity, the second molds themind to serve the moulders. The church either saves aman or destroy him for life, education either fits or misfits a

for service. It has been said that Tradefollows the flag. GeneralSmedley D. Butler of theUnited States Marine in a recentpolitical speech said thatAmerican marines are usedostensibly to collect the debtsof American bankers and toprotect American investments inforeign countries. (He wasreferring to non-white countriesand communities.) When a foreign nationdesires for selfish reasons to

share in the rich potentialitiesof a backward country, it sendsemissaries and agents to courtthe friendship and confidenceof the expectant victim. Thisdone, the “foreign devil” (thisis the name given by Asiatics towhite exploiters) contracts tofinance certain governmentor private enterprises throughloans in return for certainvaluable concessions. These concessions generallycover the mineral, industrial, oragricultural resources of thecountry, or controlling interestsin public utilities ,communica-tions and transportation. These contracts are drawnup by lawyers versed in theintricacies of international lawand are so phrased andtimed that the party of thesecond part, namely the debtornation is bound to default. Atthe close of legal formalities thecreditor nation religiouslyfulfills its part of the contractand waits patiently for theinevitable. In many instances, nativeofficials are bribed to fosterlegislation favorable to thedesigns of these foreign devils;and it has been proven

that foreign creditors oftendictate through bribes andcoercion, the election of publicofficials in debtor countries and states- this accounts in alarge measure for so manypuppet governments in mosttropical countries. In this manner foreign nationsproceed to establish “spheresof influence” in backward coun-tries and non-white communi-ties. When marines and battleshipsare sent to these lands we aretold by the State Department ofthe country involved that theyare there to protect the life andproperty of its nationals. It’s but a clever subterfuge todisguise the real truth…

Daddy’s Magic Trick The little boy greeted hisgrandmother with a hug andsaid, “I’m so happy to see yougrandma. Now maybe daddywill do the trick he has beenpromising us.” The grandmother was curious.

“What trick is that my dear?”she asked. The little boy replied, “Iheard daddy tell mommy thathe would climb the walls ifever you came to visit usagain.”

Walking up to a departmentstore’s fabric counter, the prettygirl said, “I would like to buythis material for a new dress. How much does it cost?” “Only one kiss per yard,”replied the male clerk with asmirk. “In that case,” said the girl,“I’ll take ten yards.”

With great expectation andanticipation written all over hisface, the clerk quickly measuredout the cloth, wrapped it up, thenteasingly held it out. The girl snapped up thepackage, pointed to the oldgeezer standing beside her, andsmiled, “Grandpa will pay thebill.”

BY Wellington Ramos I am told that nationallyknown and popular formerfootball player Gerald“Speedy” Henry will becontesting elections for the postof President of the FootballFederation of Belize (FFB) I have known Speedy Henryfor many years. He played forCayo’s Rockin-R and Avengersfor many years. I played againsthim when I was with the OrangeWalk All Stars Team back in the

1970's. I am therefore publiclyendorsing Speedy for theposition because of the skills, experience, dedication, integrity, professionalism and vision hehas for football. For too long football in Belizehas been under the control ofindividuals who lack theseessential qualities and were notready to bring the sport tointernational levels. If Speedy is elected, Belizewill witness a significant change

in the quality of football playersBelize produce and the type ofgame that will be played. Speedy is a winner. Heis known to put 100% of hiseffort in everything he does. He retired from the publicservice a few years ago. The lastposition he held was PermanentSecretary in the Ministry ofWorks. He therefore bringsexcellent administrative andprofessional skills andexperience to the table.
