Cut the following amounts using each pattern piece. I used a color spectrum bundle and used two colors of similar shades in most stars, and left a few solid in the pattern shown above. Create your own colorway for any occasion or room decor. Perhaps one in shades of white for the winter holidays, a red, white and blue one for Fourth or July, soft pastels for a baby shower or bright primary colors for a child’s birthday.

Cutting Tip: If using large fabric scraps, you can mini-mize waste and simplify cutting by cutting your fabric into strips the width of your template. Then cut out your pattern continuously. If you use this technique you will nd that the pattern pieces do not t exactly within the strip size indicated above, since opposite sides of the pattern pieces are not parallel. This dier-ence will not impact the nished product. To increase accuracy consistently use the top or bottom of each strip as a guide when lining up your pattern piece before making each cut.

Arrange the pieces for the front and back of each star in the design of your choice.

Sew the pieces together to make the front and back of each star.

For sewing instructions see Linaloo’s patch-work star tutorial. http://linaloo.typepad.com/linaloo/2009/10/patchwork-star.html

This pattern will create a garland with a nished length of 84” (213 cm), which covers a 72” (183 cm) mantel with a gentle swag.

Variation: To adjust overall garland length, add or remove stars, change the mixture of star sizes or vary the space between each star by experiment-ing with tying them closer or further apart.

Variation: If using your own design, cut 10 pieces for each star of the appropriate size pattern and 2 ties. For the center star cut 1 additional tie.

A = 30, 2” strips (5 cm)B = 40, 2 1/4” strips (5.75 cm)C = 40, 2 1/2” strips (6.35 cm)D = 20, 2 7/8” strips (7.3 cm)Ties = 27

Place the front of the star right side up and lay the ties as shown. For the center star lay an additional tie on the top point. This will become a hook to hang the center from. For the outer two ends of the garland I used each end stars tie to attach them to the mantel. If you prefer you could use a loop to make a hook instead.

Layer the back star on top, right sides together. Pin at each corner making sure to secure ties in place.

Sew all layers together, leaving a gap as shown on one edge.

Trim the excess fabric from each corner, turn your star right side out, stu and slipstitch the remaining gap closed.

To add the center dimple to your stars, with a needle and coordinating thread pierce the center of each star from the back through to the front and then back again. Pull thread tight to dimple the center, then secure with a knot.

Repeat these steps for each star.

Once you are complete, tie your stars in the design of your choice, hang and enjoy!
