STAR pp Run Summary Carl Gagliardi March 11, 2008 Physics goals for the 200 GeV p+p run Comparison data for FMS CGC search Extend x F and p T range for forward single-spin asymmetries Study direct photon asymmetries in forward direction Electrons from Charm and Bottom, with low material, to resolve STAR/PHENIX discrepancy Integrated FMS luminosity (through the end of the pp run) Luminosity needed for CGC reference data Sampled 7.8 pb -1 87% of goal Integrated FMS transverse figure-of-merit (through the end of the pp run) Using reported CNI values Only 43% of goal, after calibration from jet FOM (= P 2 L) needed for forward 0 and jet asymmetries and to embark on direct photon asymmetries Sampled 1.6 pb -1, based on blue beam polarization FOM lower for yellow beam polarization (for east FPD) Integrated slow detector luminosity (through the end of the pp run) 69% of goal Needed for non-photonic electron cross sections (and mid-rapidity transverse spin measurements) Sampled 3.1 pb -1 Critical heavy flavor triggers ran with lower prescale factors than during d+Au, so event yields in pp and d+Au are comparable p+p run scorecard Comparison data for FMS CGC search Good shape Extend x F and p T range for forward single-spin asymmetries Significant extension, but well short of what we had intended to achieve Study direct photon asymmetries in forward direction Probably not practical with the current limited data set Electrons from Charm and Bottom, with low material, to resolve STAR/PHENIX discrepancy Good shape For the future: DAQ1000 One sector of the TPC (1/24) instrumented with DAQ1000 electronics Routine operation at 250 Hz Speed test: operated at 1 kHz with only 5-7% dead time Full TPC will be instrumented for Run 9 For the future: TOF + DAQ1000 Five TOF trays (of 120) installed outside the DAQ1000 sector Recorded 78M p+p minbias events with TOF + DAQ1000 Already achieving good particle separation with preliminary TOF calibrations and (pre-)preliminary DAQ1000 tracking At least sixty TOF trays in Run 9; full TOF in Run 10 For the future: pp2pp Roman pots installed east and west downstream of STAR (thanks, C-AD!) pp2pp data acquisition integrated into STAR trigger and DAQ systems Inserted Roman pots into the beam pipe during last 2 hours of p+p run Observed pp2pp detector rates as expected No impact on background levels in STAR mid-rapidity detectors Physics in Run 9 (part of ongoing BUR discussion) For the future: low-energy beam test It works! Ready for low-energy scan in Run 10 s NN = 9 GeV
