Designers & installers should ensure that installations are arranged so that therisk of ignition from high temperatures or electric arc is minimised, and thatprotection from harmful thermal effects is provided. Protection requirementsinclude protecting against fire caused by insulation faults, arcs & sparks & hightemperatures (1).

Installing arc fault detection devices is recognised as a means of mitigating therisk from fire in final AC circuits due to arc faults.

The wiring regulations permit the use of RCDs as a measure for protectionagainst insulation faults, & require the use of other circuit protection devices, such as MCBs, to provide protection to the wiring system from overcurrentconditions, but those devices cannot detect or disconnect all arc faults. AFDDsdetect arc faults that will not be detected by RCDs or MCBs. Serial arcs can notbe detected by MCBs or RCDs and the magnitude of parallel arc faults may beinsufficient to operate an MCB or RCD.

In order to provide for all of the above requirements Crabtree AFDDs arecombined with Miniature RCBOs as a single protective device that includesovercurrent protection, short circuit / fault protection, earth leakage protection, and arc fault protection, with two pole isolation as standard.

ARC FAULT DETECTIONDEVICES (AFDDs)The wiring regulations (BS7671) sets out requirements forelectrical installations in the UK, including requirements forprotection of persons, livestock & property against the risk fromfires that may be generated & propagated in electricalinstallations.

(1) Requirements of BS7671 can be found in Chapters 13 (Protection For Safety) and Chapter 42(Protection Against Thermal Effects) other chapters may also be applicable. Readers should refer toBS7671 for full details.

Government statistics show a high number of incidents where the source of ignition is recorded as electricaldistribution or electrical appliance, these two categories amount to more than 13,000 fires in total (2).

Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) have been proven to reduce the number of incidents of electrical fires incountries where these devices are already used. AFDDs detect & automatically disconnect arc faults that occur indamaged or crushed cables, in loose terminations, and in ageing installations where the insulation quality degradesover time.

Arc faults cause overheating and the temperatures that are generated from such overheating can be high enoughto ignite flammable materials and cause fires. AFDDs monitor the condition of a circuit for unusual conditions thatare indicative of a series or parallel arc. These arc fault conditions can occur in electrical installation circuits and incords & leads and equipment connected to those circuits. AFDDs detect arc fault conditions & automaticallydisconnect the power to the circuit with an arc fault.

Serial arcing faults:These are typically caused by a loose connection or adamaged conductor. In this arc fault condition currentflow is always lower than the operational load current.Miniature Circuit Breakers and Residual Current protectivedevices will not detect these electrical faults.

Parallel arcing faults between conductors:These are caused by electric arcs resulting from damageto the insulation that permits minimal contact between thetwo live conductors. MCBs or RCBOs may trip if the faultcurrent is high enough. However AFDDs are extremelysensitive and will disconnect parallel arcing faults whereMCB and RCBO shutdown conditions are not reached.

Parallel arcing faults between phase or neutral / protective conductor:AFDDs will detect arcing faults against the protectiveconductor and provide adequate fire protection where noRCD is used. However Starbreaker AFDDs are combinedwith 30mA Miniature RCBOs that reliably detect and shutdown this type of parallel arc fault.

AFDD with Miniature RCBO provides the highestlevels of protection for the installation and its users.

Arc fault detection devices offer extremely effective protectionagainst fires that are caused by electrical faults. Typically causesinclude loose connections, damaged cables, crushed cables orwhere aged insulation allows current to leak between conductors.

AFDDs detect electrical arcing faults that MCBs, RCDs andRCBOs cannot detect.

The wiring regulations (BS 7671) sets out requirements forelectrical installations in the UK, including requirements foradditional protection by 30mA RCD.

Designers and installers should ensure that installations are arranged so that socket outlets, circuits in orpassing through a room with fixed bath or shower, cables concealed in walls and partitions, lighting circuitsetc are each protected by a 30mA RCD and each installation should be divided into the number of circuits asnecessary to avoid unwanted tripping of RCDs (1).

Starbreaker miniature RCBOs bring higher levels of safety to an electrical installation and its users becausethey include switched neutral as standard and bring cost savings by reducing installation and testing times.

CRABTREE MINIATURERCBOs - WITH SWITCHEDNEUTRAL AS STANDARD

Safer installations means safer homesStarbreaker Miniature RCBOs with switched neutralbuilt in as standard will fully isolate a faulty ordamaged circuit by disconnecting live and neutralconductors.

Using Starbreaker Miniature RCBOs will guaranteethat healthy circuits remain in service and that only afaulty circuit is switched off. This avoids danger andprevents inconvenience in the event of a fault (asrequired by regulation 314.1)* (2).

Miniature RCBOs take up less space in theconsumer unit and so provide more wiring space forthe installer, making the installation process easierand quicker.

Starbreaker RCBOs go one step further, they haveswitched neutral built in as standard, live and neutralconductors do not have to be disconnected forinsulation resistance testing. This saves time andmoney, particularly for responsible landlords whoregularly test installations during occupancy voids.
