Hello ReadersI am mystified and saddened by the breaking news of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. To damage and kill innocent lives at a community event which should have been celebrating the achievements of the runners is an unconscionable act of cowardice and malevolence. It pulls at the flight or fight instincts in each of us and draws us to ask when and where another incident might occur. It fans fears for ourselves, family and friends. We consider avoiding worthwhile events and a creeping mistrust seeps into our thinking and attitudes toward others.

The best way to deal with these fears is to share them with trusted listeners and give ourselves opportunity to heal from our reactions. For some this may be supporting and celebrating the best aspects of the lives directly and indirectly affected by the damage or it may involve following through with plans that bring us to events where people gather and that carry a risk of further incident. I believe the best way to fight is to face our fears and be an active participant in life with all its risks and catastrophes, all its celebrations and achievements, all its people and their stories.

Yours in Health & Fitness

Chaplain Dave - “Lest we forget”John 15:12-13

Jesus said: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

I was privileged to serve at the Gawler ANZAC Day service this year. I was delighted with the large crowd in attendance. We were united in Gawler but also with thousands of others worldwide participating in similar services. For many ANZAC Day is much more than just a day off. It allows a pause for reflecting on various theatres of war across time and space, from Gallipoli and the Western Front, to Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

There is something about this special (dare I call it a ‘spiritual’) day, something more than just a crowd gathered.

Celtic lore describes ‘Thin Places’; places and times where the veil between this world and the spiritual is particularly

thin – where we catch a glimpse of great mysteries. I don’t know about you, but ANZAC day is like that for me.

At a time when there is increasing pressure to subdue the spiritual and jettison the religious I am delighted to see events like ANZAC services thrive. To see young people flocking to such services gives me hope that materialism isn’t the only thing the next generation are pursuing.

The values of Mateship and Sacrifice are remembered, celebrated and renewed at these times. We encounter something of the human condition and I can’t help but see the connections between the Christian story and ANZAC Day.

They share the darkness of the human experiense. At Easter many of us observed Good Friday; the day we remember Jesus’ sacrificial death for the world. Those who have known the hell of war can relate more than most people with Jesus’ anguished cry from the cross, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” It’s a cry that has echoed down through the ages of the human experience.

And of course there is the idea of the Ultimate Sacrifice; of one life being given for another. Many gravestones and memorials have the ancient words from John 15 in the Bible, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

So try as we might as a society to concrete over spirituality with a hard kind of materialism – it creeps through the cracks and bubbles to the surface like a spring; finding its way into our lives in many ways.

I wonder if that is part of what happens on days like ANZAC Day. Where, through remembering, we are reminded that we are part of something bigger than ourselves; something beyond ourselves.

So let’s take the time to foster that easily neglected part of us; the desire for the spiritual as we ponder the price of peace.

Maintaining your Health in Winter

As the cold weather approaches, exercising outdoors becomes increasingly difficult. This presents challenges and more often than not, requires a change of activities.

This is why many of us find it difficult to exercise or even stop altogether. Doing less exercise increases your chances of adding unwanted kilos to your body that make you feel less energetic and unhealthy.

What is a healthy weight? There are lots of measures out there. However waistline circumference is a key indicator of an individual’s health. No matter how tall you are, a waistline measurement of greater than 94cm for a male and 80cm for a female is an indicator of fat deposits and increases the risk of developing chronic diseases.

Food intake is an important factor in maintaining a healthy weight over Winter. Nutritional balance is critical to increasing your health. Portion control is a key area many people do

not understand fully. Eating less processed food is another. Seek advice and follow nutrition plans provided by a dietician or nutritionist. Completing a daily food diary will help you maintain a healthy weight range. Make a shopping list to make life easy for you. Filling out your diary will make you more accountable and help you stay on track.

Health risk however, is not solely linked to waist circumference and food. Physical inactivity should not be overlooked. Fighting the Winter barriers can be as simple as starting a new fitness regime or trying more group fitness classes that focus on increasing cardio fitness instead of running outside.

All efforts to improve exercise frequency will help reduce health risk factors. Committing to a daily and weekly exercise schedule, gradually increasing intensity will improve fitness levels and heart health not to mention your waistline.

If you want to take the guesswork out of maintaining a healthy weight range, then consider seeking the advice of fitness professionals. STARplex Fitness Centre provide a health screen which uncovers potential health risk factors through measurements, weighing, postural alignment and blood pressure. Staff are trained to provide solutions to your health needs and can tailor a fitness program to your specific needs.

but camaraderie and team work for one to focus on. No amount of training can mentally prepare someone for obstacles like the Electric Eel, Electricoshock Therapy (10,000 volt cable shocks at 3 sec intervals), the Funky Monkey, Berlin Walls, Kiss of Mud, Trench Warfare, Walk the Plank (with a 15ft drop into a pool of freezing water) or the Ice Enema. However, with teamwork and encouragement all were conquered by the nine members of the Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies.

“The Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies crossed the finish line with a final course time of 3 hours and 50 minutes, but as we had all promised when reciting the official Tough Mudder pledge at the commencement of the half marathon course; we had put team work and camaraderie before our course time; we did not whine because kids whine; we helped our fellow Mudders to complete the course; and most importantly, we triumphantly overcame ALL fears”, says Kat.

New York here we come!STARplex Fitness Centre Personal Training Coordinator, Samantha Craig and Trinity College Director of Instrumental Music and Head of Music Curriculum, Louise Skelton, are continuing their massive fundraising project for the Heart Foundation. Their goal is to help promote healthy living and active lifestyles in order to prevent Heart Disease. Their project will culminate in them running 42.2kms in the 2013 New York Marathon.

Samantha and Louise set a target to raise $15,000 for the Heart Foundation by the time they leave in November, but with the overwhelming support they have already received fromTrinity College/STARplex and the wider community, they have now already successfully reached (and passed!) their $15,000 target! Samantha and Louise have re-set their final target and now hope to be able to raise in excess of $20,000 for the Heart Foundation by the time they leave for New York.

“We knew it would take a lot of time and effort to reach the initial $15,000 target, but we thought that if any community could get behind us and help us to do it, this community can! We always believed that with careful planning and commitment to the project, we could raise the required amount, but we are amazed and completely overwhelmed by exactly how quickly we have been able to reach the target and how many people have come out to various events we have held to support us. We are thrilled that this project has seen several areas of the Trinity College/STARplex community unite to support us in several ways. STARplex donated the use of the Hewitson Theatre for our Quiz Night, several STARplex staff donated their time on the night to help it to run smoothly and Michael Dancer from Trinity College Senior donated his time to create the quiz and he was an outstanding Quizmaster on the night. The TCS Year 12 Health Class, Blakeview Yr 10 Art students, Montessori

Pre School students, the Year 11 Leaders, TCS Fatchen/Martin and TCS Greenway/Hargrave tutor groups, and TCS Music Students have all contributed in several areas such as helping with fundraising stalls at the TCS sports day and Shrove Tuesday, or selling raffle tickets & chocolates, or providing entertainment or creating outstanding artwork to sell at the Quiz Night.

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses and community members who have donated items to raffle or sell in the silent auction – there are too many to name them all here, but we are so grateful to each and every one of them. We have also received several private online donations from Politicians, Trinity College & STARplex staff, our friends, family and members of the community. Our Events we have held so far include a “Crazy Monkeys Playcafe” night out; for the youngest members of our community in January which raised $475; a garage sale as part of the Williamstown ‘Town Garage Sale Day’ in February where several of our friends and family donated items for us to sell in which we raised $630; a ‘Champers Cup Cake and Chick Flick’ night at the Gawler Cinema (also in February) in which we filled one of the cinemas to capacity for a great night out and raised $2361 and the Trinity College Senior Music Night in March which raised $1307.

The STARplex Fitness centre supported us with their recent ‘Have a Heart Week’ where the new Les Mills classes were launched with members providing a gold coin donation to go towards our fundraising which contributed $212 towards our overall tally so far.

On April 12th we held an extremely successful Quiz Night, well attended by Trinity College/STARplex community members which raised a staggering $6316! It was a real delight to see our idea to hold a huge Trinity College/STARplex event like this come to fruition, with everyone having a great time together, all for a great cause. We want to sincerely thank everyone who has helped us out in any way so far for their support.

We are both extremely grateful and very proud to be able to work closely with our community and along the way help the Heart Foundation to continue their great work in helping to promote healthy and active lifestyles in order to help prevent Heart Disease, still the leading cause of death in Australia”, says Louise.

Samantha and Louise still have several fundraising events which will take place over the year and anyone interested in finding out more information can contact them via email or by ‘liking’ their Facebook page ‘Running For Hearts New York Marathon 2013’ which they have set up especially to promote and advertise their fundraising and training progress. Alternatively, you can offer your support by making a secure tax deductible donation through their online fundraising page: http://2013newyorkmarathon.gofundraise.com.au/page/SkeltonCraig

We wish the girls all the very best as they continue with their fundraising and as they embark on their training for the marathon over the coming months.

Great upcoming shows not to be missed!

We’re very excited to be bringing two fantastic shows to the Hewitson Theatre for Come Out Festival 2013 and we hope to continue to build on the relationship we’ve developed for successive festivals.

The Come Out Festival is an iconic children’s festival for schools and families. It is the largest festival of its kind in the world. The Festival began in 1974 as part of the Adelaide Festival of Arts and became a stand-alone biennial event in 1975.

Over two million South Australian children have participated in a Come Out Festival activity since it began.

The two acts coming to the Hewitson Theatre during May are:

Bindjareb Pinjarra (WA) – Wed 22nd May A comedy about a massacre. Dealing with Western Australia’s 1834 Pinjarra Massacre, and its contemporary reverberations, this unique work has found enthusiastic support from elders, educators and young audiences. Created by Nyoongar and Wadjella actors, Bindjareb Pinjarra demonstrates extraordinary risk-taking through its fusion of history, outrageous comedy and tough physical theatre.

Bindjareb Pinjarra speaks directly from the heart about how we all share the same history, and how by understanding our past we can work together towards a better future.

Black Violin with Drums (USA) – Mon 27th MayClassical meets hip hop. To most people, jazz, hip-hop, funk, and classical are musical genres but to revolutionary music group Black Violin, they’re nothing but ingredients. Combining an array of musical styles and influences to produce a signature sound that’s not quite maestro, not quite emcee, this trio of two classically trained violinists and their DJ is redefining the music world; one string at a time.

Michael Hill, Creative Producer at Come Out Festival says, “I’m very excited about the incredible act we’re presenting from the United States called Black Violin with Drums. Kev Marcus and Wil B, the two amazing violinists from Black Violin, work with a DJ and drummer to blend hip-hop with classical music in a blistering show that promises to lift the roof off...Just a few months ago Black Violin performed with the Soul Children of Chicago at the Kids’ Inauguration Ball hosted by Michelle Obama in Washington DC and they brought the house down...and in just a few weeks they’ll be here doing the same thing...Black Violin is set to take over the world - do not miss them!”

STARplex Pre-Season Netball Carnival Highlights(Story continued from page 1)

Games were tightly contested in several of the divisions even to the stage of having five draws over the day. Umpires were allocated to umpire their nominated team division during the day, and then invited umpires were given the final series to umpire. Several of the finals games were exciting even resulting in a draw and having to play extra time.

Positive comments have been received from several of the teams in regard to how well organized the carnival was and they were looking forward to returning next year. Clubs are using this carnival to help organize their team list and also to play hard competitive matches prior to the commencement of their outdoor winter season.

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor

AwayFruit truly is one of nature’s wonder foods and like the saying goes can help keep you out of the Doctor’s room.

Fruit is packed with vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, foliate, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium, iron and fibre. Fibre and low GI carbohydrates make

fruit a filling snack which requires no preparation.

Eating adequate fruit has been proven to help reduce our risk of developing certain cancers, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and produce healthy babies. In Australia it is thought that up to 11% of all cancers are due to

inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption. It is believed that the natural combination of vitamins, antioxidants, phytoestrogens and fibre in fruit and vegetables work together to reduce your risk. Soluble fibre, flavonoids, antioxidant vitamins, phytoestrogens and trace minerals are all thought to be important in reducing the risk of blocked arteries and controlling cholesterol levels. Eating the recommended two serves of fruit per day can help reduce blood pressure and help protect against heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Fruit is a great source of foliate which is a vital nutrient for pregnant mothers to help protect against cases of spina bifida. It is thought that at least two thirds of infant spina bfida cases could be prevented with adequate foliate intake one month prior to pregnancy and in the first three months of pregnancy.

You can get all the health benefits from fresh, dried, pureed or tinned fruit so there are no excuses not to consume your two serves a day.

Feeling Fit, Healthy

and Totally Recharged

Hi, my name is Norm Lange and I am one of the IT staff at Trinity College, having worked here since January 1996. I have been a regular at the Fitness Centre now for several years, usually coming over to group fitness classes with my wife Stephanie.

I won what was known as the Body Transformation Challenge several years ago, with a weight loss of 12kg and at that stage I was 105kgs. I found that was hard work as I was a couch potato until then and the only running around I did was playing with my kids, Sam and Beth. Sam is also doing the PBT this year.

My weight has basically been static since the BTC and I always knew that I still had a way to go to get down to an ideal weight. I hovered around the 92-94kg area and I was going to the gym five to six times a week and generally felt very good. My diet was healthy, but it was the meal sizes that were not right, as well as the snacks in the evening and a few drinks here and there.

Early this year when the offer came out again for a PBT challenge I decided to have a go. I don’t regret it at all.

Kylie my trainer has been a great help in mapping out and monitoring my programme and progress, as well as the support from my family and fellow staff members from school doing the challenge. Paul Pearce takes me for group PT’s and he is like a Commando version of the Energiser Bunny!

At the commencement of the PBT Challenge I set out to lose 12 kgs in 12 weeks. So far, eight weeks in, I have lost 10kgs and a total of 27cms. One of the great benefits of this loss is that my Doctor has halved my blood pressure medication with an aim to take me off my medication altogether in a few months.

I also do group rides with the Gawler Wheelers and enjoy the rides on Saturday mornings, usually between 50-75 kms each ride.

Doing the PBT challenge this year has given me so much more energy. The only drawback is that I am going to be broke from having to replace my entire wardrobe of clothes, but my general feeling of wellness has been a blessing.

I am totally recharged.

Norm Lange/IT Staff Trinity College

Congratulations Norm, it is good to hear that you are feeling so well and that your blood pressure is now stabilising. Keep up the good work, you are an inspiration to us all.

Benefits of Swimming Over WinterIt is widely reported that children need repetition in order to learn a skill whether it is reading, riding a bike or swimming. Each winter many parents choose to take their children out of swimming lessons and are surprised when they come back in the warmer months that the children have in many cases lost some aspect of the swimming skills previously learnt.

Concerns over catching colds and flus and having to go out in the colder weather are predominantly the reasons parents stop their children swimming over the winter months. It should be noted that there is no scientific evidence to support this. Colds and flus are generally transmitted by contact with an infected

person and children are more likely to catch a cold or flu from a family member than they are from swimming.

The benefits of swimming in winter far outweigh the reasons for not continuing including continuity and better retention of swimming skills as well as the many physical benefits. The breathing technique that occurs in swimming helps reduce the chance of respiratory problems and the benefits of swimming to asthmatics are widely acknowledged. Swimming also aids in eliminating toxins from the body and developing a stronger immune system. In addition, the social and emotional benefits to a child from this form of exercise can will ensure they stay active and healthy during the winter months.

From a water safety perspective it is important to note that the Royal Lifesaving Drowning Report for 2011/12 indicated that 20% of drownings occurred during the winter months and serves as an important reminder for parents not to become complacent over the winter season.

It is really important that once the decision is made to have your child learn to swim, they are able to continue with lessons throughout the year so that important lifesaving and swimming skills are retained and you don’t find yourself starting the process again.
