FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New York, NY May 2nd, 2017

B-SIDEa film by KATHRYN BARNISH

B-Side, the first short narrative film by creative media artist Kathryn Barnish is to be screened at the 2017 MMC Creative Media Showcase.

B-side is an experimental poetic narrative that shifts in time from one moment to another. Through the lens of longing for artistic realization, the narrative follows the dreams and delusions of a starving art student, with New York City as its backdrop. Time lost, time gained and time rudimentary all feed into the delusions of this artist faced with his ultimate reality: that he can’t escape time. His delusions are rooted in his struggle with anxiety. Not being able to shed the moments lost that taunt his thinking, the artist slips into a world of parallel selves. Perhaps his journey becomes his second chance to save his former self from his shifted world of time.

B-side is a meditation on anxiety, the constraints of time and the regret when they both take control of our lives. In some way, it is a celebration of the mysteries of our lost moments in time and what would happen if we chose not to let our fear of time control us.

B-Side will also be released on the filmmaker’s website on May 16th, 2017. To stream the film and find out more about Kathryn Barnish please visit www.KathrynBarnish.com/portfolio/b-side.

Artist’s Statement:I’ve found myself standing at street corners, alleyways and doorsteps so often lately, admiring how light changes into color, creating characters within inanimate objects. In my head I find stories for these characters, thinking of the people who’ve passed them by without notice and without thought. I’ve always been someone to stop and take notice, which has in many ways pushed me into the field of media making. Creatively, I have always been drawn towards stories that take notice to things that are easily passed by. In pursuing a career in media, I learned I can use the light, color and unnoticed features of my world to tell stories.

My voice as a storyteller is very much influenced by films such as Park Chan Wook’s The Handmaiden, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, and Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I’m drawn to these stories because they take seemingly unnoticed details and turn them into complex narratives. These directors’ constructions of such narratives have widened my view of the world, creating an awareness I can employ in my own direction as a storyteller. I believe most artists can agree that time is our worst enemy. In our pursuit of creativity, we always have the lingering doom of all the moments wasted. We are confronted with harsh deadlines within seemingly impossible constraints. We find the moments we don’t spend on our craft lost, never to return, and the notion of time takes control of the thing we love most: our art. In the making of B-side I wanted to explore the perception of time within an artist’s brain. Rooted in my own struggles with anxiety, this film delves into our obsession with time and how it can consume all thought. Through physical and metaphysical relationships to time my film is a meditation on how our relationship with time can lead to destruction of ourselves. To me, time goes unexamined yet it is the force that controls us, literally, every minute of our lives.

Bio:Kathryn Barnish is a digital media artist studying in New York City, with routes from its less loved neighbor to the west, New Jersey. As she finishes her studies in digital video and graphic design, she focuses on projects ranging from short narrative films to digital illustration, combining her eye for design and meditation in video to develop her professional portfolio. Her digital illustrations are humorous, yet punchy showcasing her desire to always be bold yet subtle in practice. Much like her art, the cinematic landscapes of her films don’t follow any rules but her own. Within color, space and time her work is a reflection of her own saturated vision of the world.

Barnish has been featured in the Hewitt Gallery of Art (NY) in a celebration of her senior thesis work Temporary Homes (2016), a print and video installation. Her short film B-side will be shown in the Theresa Lang Theater (NY) this coming May as a part of Marymount Manhattan’s creative media showcase.

She enjoys watercolors, a cruelty-free lifestyle, confectionary art and traveling to unexplored (by her) places in her spare time.
