We offer deliciously prepared food in

    an amazingly relaxed atmosphere.

We also cater for large or small groups.

The trumpet of the nation hassounded, heed the call. We are allinvited to descent upon Belmopan onTuesday, November 18 to showour support for the unprecedenteddevelopment taking place across thenation. National development occurring forthe first time in Belize include the firstNational Bank of Belize, a revivedDevelopment Finance Corporationof Belize as well as the many socialjustice programs benefiting tens ofthousands of Belizeans in the form ofSchool Subsidies, Food Pantry,Boost, Christmas and other Cheersas well as the housing loan write offsand the announced Decembermortgage payment for all Belizeanswith housing loans up to one hundredthousand dollars held at all financialinstitutions in Belize. National development combinedwith providing that personal financialtouch to the people wins elections. This is what the United DemocraticParty is doing. The more the UDP

The Time To Stand Up For Your Nation is NOW!!!government undertakes andintensifies these programs, theharder it becomes for the oppositionto attain political victory. This theyknow only too well and so they arerunning scared. Fueled by funds from thePetro Caribe Initiative, the nationaldevelopment and social justiceprograms of the United DemocraticParty government must be halted, itmust be halted at any cost and so theopposition People’s United Party hasembarked on a mission to throw amonkey wrench into the works. Stopthe Petro Caribe program, stop thesocial programs, halt the nationaldevelopment, bring our first nationbank to its knees; curtail availablefunds in the DFC. Such is the agendaof the opposition PUP. In pursuit of their selfish politicalagenda, the leadership of theopposition PUP wants to see theBelizean people suffer. In advancingthis agenda the PUP has proceededto file for an injunction to bring Petro

Caribe to a screeching halt. The PUP secretly operated thevery same funds for two yearsduring which they did absolutelynothing for Belize and Belizeans. While the formula of the arrangementhas not changed, the leader ofthe PUP, when questioned during apress briefing this week told thenation that his party when ingovernment collected a PITTANCEfrom the Petro Caribe initiative. While almost eighty million dollarsmight seem like a pittance to the leaderof PUP; the funds derived for thePetro Caribe arrangement by theDean Barrow lead UDP Governmentis doing wonders for the nation andits people. When asked if he has soughtto bring to the attention of theVenezuelan Embassy, his party’sopposition to the way in whichGovernment is utilizing Petro Caribefunds, the opposition leader craftilydodged the question. The realityis that, given the PUP track recordin the handling of all funds, theVenezuelans might not want to see anyof them not even in photographs asthey are the same faces who were in

government when the Petro Caribeinitiative was mismanaged, misusedand abused. They were also still inoffice when Venezuelan housinggrants were used to pay the debt of aprivate medical institution while needyBelizeans, the intended beneficiaries, were shafted. On Tuesday, November 18, cometo Belmopan, bring your relatives, your friends and your neighbors, jump on a bus and let us all convergeat the foot of the nationalassembly building in Belmopan at10:00 a.m. for the special sitting ofthe House of Representativeswhen the Petro Caribe matterwill be debated. Thousands of new jobs have beencreated. Workers on the variousdevelopment projects are nowearning an honest living. They areliving in pride as they provide fortheir families. The time to stand up formarked improvement in our standardof living and for the development ofour nation is now. Belizeans, StandUp and Be Counted! Dear Editor, Allow me a space in yournewspaper to respond to “letterto the Editor” reference religiousdiscrimination. As a resident of theSan Ignacio and Santa Elena, I wantto agree that Mr. Juan is all the goodthings that was said in the letter. Itseems, though, that the person whowrote is privy to a lot of informationif he/she can attest that it was theonly application submitted. If so itshould be that he/she should know thatthe criteria that (I would assume)the Board of Governors (BOG) waslooking for was not only religiousstatus of the candidate. It wasmentioned that Mr. Juan was veryinstrumental in the realization of theAuditorium but the hard work ofprevious teachers and entities mustnot be forgotten. This being said, we mustunderstand and realize that SHCIS a Catholic Institution. There aremany other institutions for example,Eden High School, Alvin YoungNazarine High School and manyothers in the country whereby if

you are employed you mustcomply with their Religious practices.Even the students are taught thatinstitution’s specific belief and thestudents must attend their churchservices. It is only Sacred HeartCollege, which is a CatholicInstitution, that is not imposing itsFaith on the students. Sacred Heart College should beon it’s guard otherwise it can loose allits Catholic roots from the inceptionof education in the country and theHigh School which was through thegreat efforts of Monsinor FacundoCastillo and other priests. If Imay make mention here, there hadalready been “rumours” of wantingto take out the crucifixes from theclassrooms.! All the best to whosoever thepost was granted to and I praythat that person knows to Trust in theLord with all his/her heart andlean not unto their ownunderstanding and asknowledge theLort that He may direct the paths ofSacred Heart College!.Prefer to have name witheld

Dear Editor; My child is currently in Standard 4at one of the leading primaryinstitutions in San Ignacio, aninstitution that is known for itscommitment to excellence. However, since my child entered this Standard4 class in September, her experiencethus far can only be described asabsolutely hellish leaving much to bedesired! The principal of the primary school,a dedicated educator, recognizes theproblem but says that she ishandicapped as the school is deficientin teaching capacity for the upperclasses. This teacher lacks the capacity tohandle the simple day to day runningof a classroom. Her methods seemto be outdated and archaic. Herability to reach the students entrustedin her care seems non-existent as theresults of several tests clearly showthat she is simply not getting throughto students in her classroom. Tocompound this matter, she threatensthe children when a parent dares tovisit the principal to voice theirdiscontent. Children do not respondwell in an environment where the

authority figure is deemed as a threat. My child has all the necessarysupport to achieve academicexcellence, yet with each given day,her attitude toward school andlearning is becoming more and morenegative. My child is no longer eagerto go to school as was the case in thefirst five years of her school life. Wespend long hours after school waitingfor her to be dismissed because itseems this specific teacher even hasa problem with time management. Given that Standard 4 is a criticalstage in a child’s educationalformation I am hoping that theadministration of this primary schoolwill sooner, rather than later find asolution to this challenge which, withevery passing day continues to be asource of frustration to students andparents alike. We acknowledge that this Anglicanschool has always maintained a levelof academic excellence well abovemany others. If this prevailingsituation is allowed to fester withoutattention, the results we have cometo expect from this school will beseriously affected in years to come.(Please do not print my name)

Will you join me?A Commitment of Words * We commit to using our words todefend and heal, not to harm. * We will not gossip. * We will not belittle. * We will guard our sisters byalways speaking the best about them, encouraging them into all God wouldhave them to be, and offering graceinstead of condemnation. * We will be loyal and loving, remembering that even if we disagreewe still fight on the same side–neveragainst each other.

As a true melting pot of variouscultures, Belize has woven bits andpieces of many ethnicities to makewhat we know as our beautifulcountry. With many cultures comingin, tradition and custom sometimesdisappear as the days go by.However, a group that is not goingsilently is the Garifuna. WithNovember 19th, being their specialday and designated a national holiday,Garifunas countrywide live up to thisyear’s theme of Proudly empowering

History of the GarifunasHistory of the GarifunasHistory of the GarifunasHistory of the GarifunasHistory of the Garifunas The white strip, located in themiddle between the black and theyellow, reminds them of the role ofthe white man (Europe) in thehistory and formation of the Garifunapeople – the forcible removal andenslavement of the African, theseizure of Garifuna land, whichprecipitated the Garifuna resistance, and the forcible removal of the peoplefrom St. Vincent. Even after thearrival and dispersal in CentralAmerica, it was still necessary to dealwith the white man. At another level, white symbolizesthe peace that has eluded the Garifunapeople for most of their turbulenthistory - the peace for which theycontinue to yearn.

Garifuna culture Garinagu are a resilient tribal peoplewho have survived many years ofextreme hardships. Despite these, ethnological studies show thatthey are the only black people in theAmericas to have preserved theirnative culture. Because theirancestors were never slaves, theyhave been able to preserve their richand unique Afro-Caribbean heritage. Also, the Garifunas traditions, deepsense of kinship and participationin community cultural activities haveprovided them with a sense ofsolidarity and cultural identity duringtimes of turmoil.

certain responsibilities and obligationsbetween the living and deceased.Food and drink should occasionallybe laid out for the ancestors who mayalso appear in dreams. A spiritualleader, a “Buyei” leads the contactof a family with the deceased. Inpreparation of these spiritualgatherings with healing, drummingand dancing, a feast of seafood, meatand cassava bread is prepared. Garifuna spiritualism is creativelyexpressed through music, dancingand other art forms.

Food Traditional Garifuna foods arebased around fish, chicken, cassava, bananas, and plantains. Most of themeals are rich and hearty. One of the staples of the diet iscassava. Cassava is made intoa bread, a drink, a pudding, and evena wine! The cassava bread is servedwith most meals. The process ofmaking the bread is very laborintensive and takes several days. Hudut is a very commontraditional meal. Hudut consistsof fish cooked in a coconut broth(called sere) and served with mashedplantains or yams. Dharasa is theGarifuna version of a tamale made withgreen bananas. It can be made eithersweet or sour. The foods are very labor intensiveand used to be cooked over an openfire hearth. Today, stoves save time, but some families still prefer the tasteof the fire hearth.

our children in their Garifuna heritage. On May 18th, 2001, the UnitedNations Educational, Scientific andCultural Organization (UNESCO)proclaimed the Garifuna language, music and dance a masterpiece ofthe oral and intangible heritage ofhumanity. Belize’s very own AndyPalacio, celebrated musician andsinger was honored with the title ofArtist for Peace by UNESCO. Withmuch history, culture, tradition, song, food, religion, the Garifunas havecertainly left their mark in Belize. Forthat, we feature them in this week’sOur Belize Community. Grappling with the ramifications ofthe end of slavery, a new ethnic group, the Garifuna appeared. In the early1800s, the Garifuna, descendants ofCarib peoples of the Lesser Antillesand of Africans who had escapedfrom slavery, arrived in the settlement. The Garifuna had resisted Britishand French colonialism in theLesser Antilles until they weredefeated by the British in 1796. Afterputting down a violent Garifunarebellion on Saint Vincent, the Britishmoved between 1,700 and 5,000 ofthe Garifuna across the Caribbean tothe Bay Islands (present-day Islasde la Bahía) off the north coastof Honduras. From there theymigrated to the Caribbean coasts ofNicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and the southern part of present-dayBelize. By 1802 about 150 Garifunahad settled in the Stann Creek(present-day Dangriga) area andwere engaged in fishing andfarming.

The Flag Any country or entity has a flagwhich symbolizes their history andwhat they stand for. The Garifuna havetheir own with a black strip, which islocated at the top. This black bandrepresents the black ancestry ofthe Garifuna people. The people havealways acknowledged the Africaninput into what became the Garifunapeople, a phenomenon that occurredin St. Vincent starting in theseventeenth Century.

Religion and spirituality Garinagu are a proud peopledevoted to their roots and theirreligion consists of a mix ofCatholicism, African and Indianbeliefs. Belief in and respect for theancestors is at the very core of theirfaith. The Garifuna believe that thedeparted ancestors mediate betweenthe individual the external world. If aperson behaves and performs wellthen he will have good fortune. If not, then the harmony that exists inrelationships with others and theexternal world will be disruptedleading to misfortune and illness. The religious system thus implies

Music Garifuna music is similarly differentfrom the rest of Central America; themost famous form is punta. Anevolved form of traditional music, still usually played using traditionalinstruments, punta has seen somemodernization and electrificationin the 1970s; this is called punta rock.Traditional punta dancing isconsciously competitive. Artists likePen Cayetano helped innovatemodern punta rock by adding guitarsto the traditional music, and paved theway for later artists like Andy Palacio,Children of the Most High and BlackCoral. Punta was popular across

This colour, at another level, recog-nizes the hardships and injustices thatthe people have had to endure, theirstruggles for survival and the odds thatthey have had to overcome in thecourse of their history. As tough asthese experiences have been, theyhelped to strengthen the Garifuna spiritand shaped their spirituality which isbased on the principle of reciprocity, mutually beneficial two-way relation-ship between individuals or nations. The yellow strip at the bottom ofthe flag symbolizes the other half ofthe ancestry of the Garifuna – theAmerindians or Yellow Caribs as theywere referred to by Europeans. Thesewere actually a mixture of Caribs andArawaks and formed the host com-munity in which the fusion of Africaand South America took place to giverise to the emergence of the Garinaguas a distinct group indigenous to thecircum-Caribbean region. In contrast to the hardships experi-enced in the course of history, theyellow symbolizes the hope and pros-perity. Yellow is the color of gratedcassava, which is further processedto make ereba, one of the Garifunas’staple foods. It is the color of cas-sava juice, a color that is furtherbrought out in the process of turningit into dumari, an additive for enhanc-ing sauces, soups and stews. Yellowis also the color of the rising sun, which brings new promise and muchhope for a better life. Yellow, there-fore, represents hope, plenty andprosperity, as well as the Carib/Arawak input into the Garifuna iden-tity.
