Prologue

There it was. It didn’t do anything. Just hovered. Its weird

shadow was the only hint it was there but that was barely

noticeable. The boy tried not to stare in case it noticed him,

but it was so unusual. He went inside and raced to the roof

to try and get a closer look. When on the roof, the boy went

prone so he couldn’t be seen but it was too late. An ear-

piercing noise emitted from the craft. He covered his ears

and curled up into a ball waiting for it to stop but it seemed

like it went on forever. It shattered windows and broke

glasses and set off alarms for miles. Then, as suddenly as it

started, it ended. The boy, shaken up from the sound, stood

and looked over at the street below. It was empty, not a

single human in sight. He started to make his way down to

the ground but as soon as he turned around to leave he felteyes burning into his back. Suspiciously the boy turned

round ex pecting to see someone. He didn’t know how as he

was the only one up there and he didn’t see anyone come

up, but there, stood at the edge of the roof, with a majestic

silver cloak billowing in the wind stood a tall, bearded man.

The man’s face was in the shadow of his hood making itimpossible to make out any features. The boy and the man

just stood on the spot locked in some sort of eternal stare.

The bearded man broke the stare as he put his foot forward,

reached underneath his cloak and produced a staff. He

tapped the base of the staff against the roof. A split second

later he looked up and shot up at the speed of a bullet. The

boy looked up after him but he was gone. Now alone he

made his way to the ground but as he reached the street he

noticed the eerie silence. There were no alarms sounding.

Looking around him he also noticed that all the windows

were no longer shattered and glasses were no longer

broken. He started to run. He ran as fast as he could, neverlooking back, never seeing what was quickly closing in on

him from behind.

Chapter 1

The wind whistled through the leafless branches throwingshadows from the early morning sun. The crisp, untouched

snow glistened and sparkled whilst a lone hare darted

through the trees leaving light tracks behind it. The tall pine

trees loomed above me and surrounded me as I watched a

small deer a short distance away from me. I crept slightly

closer, covering my tracks as I went and hid behind a thick

tree. Readying my bow I pulled an arrow from my quiver

and started to draw. The wind picked up slightly, causing

the furs on my jacket to dance. With my bow fully drawn I

aimed it at the deer. I steadied my breath and everything

went quiet. The only sounds were the birds singing their

morning song and the soft crunch of the deer’s hooves in

the fresh snow. I aimed slightly above the location of its

heart and crouched keeping my aim on the same spot. I was

completely focused now and only needed to release the

arrow and send it soaring through the air providing me with

a quick, clean kill. There was something stopping me

though. The smell of the snow and the trees brought back

memories of when I was a younger child of around 4 or 5.Playing hide and seek with my friends in the snow without

having to worry about who was going to feed the family or

even the village. But I had to put that behind me now as I

was nearly a man grown with my sixteenth in a couple of

weeks. I was ready to release the arrow when a voice made

me jump, making me send the arrow soaring above the nowstartled deer and thudding harmlessly into a tree behind it,

sending a flock of birds into the misty, pale blue sky. “Hey

Tok! Where are you?!” My full name was Toquius and

unlike a lot of people my age I actually preferred my full

name and hated being called anything thing else. People

knew this and only called me Tok to wind me up so Ifigured this was probably my oldest and closest friend,

Tulunis. “TOK!! GET YOUR ASS HERE RIGHT NOW!!”

Shit. That didn’t sound like a happy voice. I picked up my

bow and slung my quiver over my back and ran back

towards the village. I found Tulunis not far from her house

and sitting on a small log. “Whaddya want Tul?” I asked,

curious as to why she was so desperate, “I had a nice clean

kill on a deer so it better be important.”

“It is Tok, but important doesn’t mean it’s good….my

parents..they uh….they want to move away from here.

They said they want to start a new life somewhere else.”

“That’s okay Tul? I can still visit you?”

“Well…that’s the thing….it’s not just out of the village or

even out of the district but….off of the planet…”

“Oh….I guess that’s quite a bit further away. Are you sure

this is final? They won’t change their minds at all?”

“Pfft I wish! If it was my choice I would stay put seeing as

I’m happy here.”

I looked at the snow in disappointment and then back up toTulunis. “I’ll really miss you y’know. It won’t be the same

without you.”

“I know Tok, I know.”

Me and Tul sullenly parted ways each staring at the ground

as we walked, avoiding eye contact with anyone. I made

my way back to my house, went to my room and slumpedon my bed, staring at the ceiling. I realised that the

conversation I had had with Tul was the shortest one we’d

ever had. We’d always manage to speak for hours on end

even if there was nothing to talk about. I sat up on my bed

and took the quiver off my back and hung it on its

designated hook. As for my bow I unlocked its case and putit into the bow shaped indentation. I closed the case and

admired the workmanship of the bow. It was made out of

strong osage wood and was lined with gold and titanium

with diamonds embedded into the front at regular intervals.

The string was made with strengthened silk and overall the

entire bow was a matte black. There was a knock on the

door and suddenly a small rectangular bit of paper was slid

under the door. I looked in the hallway but there was no

sign of anyone. Going back into my room I looked at the

paper I noticed it had some sort of riddle on it

The place where tankards clash together,

Where people go if feeling under the weather,

Under a large fox’s head,

If you have travelled it’s there you can bed.

I turned the paper over and held it up to the light to see if

there was anything else I should see and just as I thought

there was. In the light a date was just visible.

5th

 December 2187

That was this year and not too far away. If today’s date was

the 25th

of November then I had 9 days to solve the riddle

and on the 5

th

I would have to go to the location it givesme. A bit of a strange thing to receive in my own house but

nevertheless I started to piece together the clues of the

riddle.
